Sometimes I think about the strangest things when I let my imagination run wild, especially when I’m playing around with headcanon. And one of those things today was: If equine are sapient in MLP, what do they domesticate and breed as beasts of burden in their stead? Would they even have beasts of burden? My answer is yes. So here is the headcanon no one asked for but are getting anyways because I thought it was a fun idea. :3
These here critters may look like floofy dragons, but they aren’t at all. These are my headcanoned version of the Wyvern in the MLP world. These creatures are often called “false dragons” because, while they may look kinda like some species of dragons, they aren’t sapient, nor are the actually related to dragons. They’re more closely related to birds than they are to dragons, but yeah.
While they’re not exactly common in Equestria, they’re very popular in Asinus (country of Donkeys), and these critters are completely domesticated and are bred mostly for labor-intensive work that even ponies need help with, but they are also bred for other purposes, such as smaller breeds for being pets or larger breeds for heavy load pulling or protection.
While there are many different breeds of wyvern, all breeds come in two different variants: flying, or grounded. The first wyvern in this tiny sketchdump is an example of the flying variant; they are commonly bred for militant purposes or traveling. Some keep them for heavy lifting work too, but not often. They tend to get big enough to carry at least two full-grown donkeys on their backs with ease, and are one of the main sources of flight travel for Asinus civilians.
The ground variant is bred mostly for heavy-duty labor work, such as pulling huge metal plows meant for digging in the hard earth (Asinus’ land has hard soil that makes it hard to grow crops in), or aid in toting other heavy-weighted items and carts. The donkeys tend to be self reliant when it comes to ground travel, but using a ground-based Wyvern to pull a carriage is generally much faster (and safer, given that the huge creature is used for protection as well). It’s also a very popular sport to ride the ground variants (and flying variants) in races, and the sport is slowly becoming highly popular amongst the world as well, which in turn is slowly helping the Wyvern grow in popularity as a domesticated animal to keep in places other than Asinus. In fact, as a solid show of alliance, Equestria, Zebrica, and Taurus were among the first to receive clutches of Wyvern eggs of both variants (as well as other things that can be found only in the donkey country) in return for a variety of items Asinus needed in return.
As for the Wyvern in general: they are very social and pack-oriented creatures, a lot like dogs, and are very loyal and protective of their families. Due to their size and sharp teeth, though, they are breed to be naturally amiable and gentle although battle-bred Wyvern are slightly more aggressive for obvious reasons.
Aaaaand that’s it so far! A little more worldbuilding concerning a country in my headcanon other than Equestria. C: I’m still thinking of possible colorings for the wyvern so suggestions are more than welcomed. And feel free to ask any questions if you have any, but I hope you guys enjoy these floofy fellows anyhow! ^.^
