Hey all! Iâm still working on this fic, but here is the first scene of a commission by @komorebirei for @mlbforblm*. The request was Lukadrien in a 1920s/1930s jazz club! Iâm hoping to have the first part of the fic posted sometime in the next several weeks or so.
(Fic title pending--the title you see above is just for this scene. Other scene titles considered were âgay jazz ficâ and âfic where they are gay and play jazz and also it's the 1930sâ. Alas, I ultimately rejected those.)
*Proceeds from this charity drive went to Color of Change.

Patrons stand shoulder-to-shoulder in the small, hot room, but for Luka, itâs just him and his guitar.
He closes his eyes and tilts his head back as his fingers find the strings instinctively, sliding from one chord to the next. Heâs following the lead of the trumpet and saxâcontent to keep rhythm for the combo, the sound of his strings melding with the upright bass wedged behind him.
The stage is small; itâs more of a nook than a proper performance space, with all the musicians squeezed together. Every once in a while, Julekaâs elbow bumps him, though Luka barely registers her touch. What he does notice is the heat: even with the night to chase away some of the sunâs fever, Lukaâs hair clings to his forehead, his limbs damp with sweat.
He supposes he could undo a few buttons of his shirt between songs. The Libertyâs dress code is laxâno one would be scandalized if he exposed a bit of skin.
In fact, hardly anyone would see. As always, the lights in the club are dim, with only a few lamps along the wall illuminating the faces in the room.
As their trumpeter, Henri, begins a solo, Luka lets his eyes rove around the room. He recognizes almost every face in the crowd, since most of clubâs visitors are regulars. Few find the place by accidentâwhile itâs right in the heart of the city, the entrance is found in an alley off the main street, and the club has a reputation among the upper crust for being seedy.
Itâs not, of course. Itâs just jazz.
The song moves to a piano interlude, and the space temporarily gets quieterâthough really, their pianist knows how to make the keys sing as loud as any brass instrument.
âWonder how long until we get a noise complaint,â Juleka mumbles.
Luka scoffs. âIâm sure the police are already on their way.â
Thereâs no law against running a jazz club, per seâbut their neighbors arenât too fond of the loud music and late nights.
âThey should just move, if they donât like the music,â Juleka says, her fingers lazing across the strings. âThey can afford it.â
âMaybe they secretly like us,â Luka teases.
Thatâs doubtful, though. Just this past year, Gabriel Agreste has sent the police to their door fifty-one times.
The song surges again, and itâs too loud for talking. A smile tugs at Lukaâs lips as he watches the crowd clap and sway, some of them attempting to dance in the close quarters. Others struggle to hold onto their drinks as they squeeze their way over to the bar, where Anarka happily refills their glasses.
Then Luka spots the stranger.
Theyâre tucked against the wall by the door, where the light barely reaches. At first, Luka thinks the shadows are making strange patterns on their faceâand then he realizes that the person is wearing a mask, pitch black, one that covers the top half of their face. Their outfit is dark, too, making them fade into the wall behind them.
Thereâs one thing about them thatâs light, though: the fair, tousled hair that falls on their forehead and curls over their ears, messy and unstyled.
The strangerâs eyes meet Lukaâs, and his fingers lag, fumbling one of the chords. Itâs not noticeable to the audience, but when he glances up at Juleka, sheâs looking at him strangely.
For the rest of the song, Luka keeps his eyes glued to the frets of his guitar, even though his fingers have known the positions for more than half his life.
When the band goes on break, Luka sets his guitar aside, his eyes drawn to the spot by the door. Itâs empty now, and when Luka scans the room, he doesnât see anyone wearing a mask or a light halo of hair.
âLooking for that masked person?â Juleka asks.
âSo you saw them, too,â Luka murmurs. He was starting to wonder if the strangerâs brief appearance was just a trick of the light.
Juleka shrugs. âYou could ask around.â
âWhat if they were a one-time patron?â
âThen they arenât coming back.â Â
Luka sighs as Juleka winds her way over to the bar, where their mother is still serving drinks. Usually he appreciates his sisterâs bluntnessâbut not when she steamrolls his daydreaming.
He does ask around. Only a few people saw the stranger before they left; one woman says the person murmured excuse me with a manâs voice, and another patron says that he seemed quiet and polite. No one knows his name or face, though.
Later, when the club has emptied out and Luka is sweeping the floor, he asks his mother if it was someone she knew. (She has strange friends, after allâa mysterious mask-wearer is just the sort of person she might be friends with.)
âNever seen them before,â Anarka grumbles, as she wipes the inside of a glass. âProbably one of Agresteâs goons, looking for a reason to shut us down.â
That feels wrong, but Luka doesnât push. His mother is right to be paranoid when the man in a mansion is constantly breathing down their necks.
The three of them keep cleaning, and Luka loses himself in his thoughts. He knows itâs not that strange for someone to slip into the club and leave before closingâbut someone wearing a mask? What are they trying to hide?
Their face, obviously. And thatâs the part Luka canât stop speculating about.
âYou know,â Juleka says, âyou donât have to sleep with every handsome stranger that sets foot in the bar.â
Luka rolls his eyes. âI donât do that.â
âOnly the unmarried ones?â
âUsually,â Luka says drily.
He knows sheâs kiddingâand she has a point. It doesnât really matter who the masked stranger is, if Luka doesnât want anything to do with them.
But Luka craves peopleâs stories. Because heâs always been more of a listener than a talker, heâs been mistaken for a loner, and thatâs stunted his social circle. Learning about peopleâwho they are, where they come from, where theyâre goingâis his way of feeling less like a recluse.
Almost everyone whoâs ever walked through the door of the club, Luka has learned something about them. (Even the policemen, who look increasingly apologetic every time theyâre called to investigate a noise complaint.) For this masked person to come and go without telling Luka anythingâŚhe canât help but feel that theyâve slipped through his fingers, like a melody heâs forgotten before he could write it down.

1. From an akuma
âSo, Ladybug!â Chat Noir says brightly. âIf youâve got any brilliant plans to get us up to Sauron out there, Iâm sure weâd love to hear them!â
Ryuuko doesnât have a clue who Sauron is, nor how it relates to the massive tentacled monster with one gigantic red eye thatâs resting on the tip of the Eiffel Tower. Theyâve tried coming from all angles, but the akumaâs eye seems to have a full three-hundred-and-sixty-degree field of vision, because it always sees them coming and bats them away as easily as swatting mosquitoes.
âWhy do I have to come up with the plans?â Ladybug grumbles. Chat Noirâs cheeky grin widens.
âBecause youâre the brains, milady, and Iâm just the humble clown.â
âYour brain was working just fine against Miracle Queen!â
Ryuuko tunes out their banter as she peeks around the corner of the wall behind which theyâre hiding. Her brain leaps from idea to idea like arcs of lightning, zapping each one to a crisp when she picks out the flaws, because all of them rely on not being seen and thereâs no way to accomplish that against this akuma. It seems to have flawless superhero senses, because it always sees right past the terrified civilians to pick out the superheroes â
WaitâŚ
âI have an idea,â Ryuuko announces. Her teammatesâ banter immediately dissipates. âThe akuma is ignoring anyone who isnât directly working against it. Itâs almost like it just wants to keep surveillance on everyone.â
âYou could say it wants to keep an eye on people,â Chat Noir says cheerfully. Ladybug sighs and facepalms.
âLow-hanging fruit, kitty,â she mutters. Ryuuko just raises an eyebrow and waits for them to finish.
âIf we want to get close, we need to not be what itâs looking for,â she says.
âLike sneaking into Le Grand Paris disguised as a pizza delivery person because thatâs not what ChloĂŠ Bourgeois is expecting you to be even though she knows youâre trying to get back something she stole from you?â Ladybug says. Chat Noir blinks.
âThatâs, uhâŚincredibly specific,â he says. âAnd Iâm not sure I want to know why. You were saying, Ryuuko?â
Unlike Chat Noir, Ryuuko does want to know the context behind Ladybugâs very specific example, because itâs exactly the kind of thing that Marinette would do. The thought of her girlfriend brings a small smile to her lips, just as when she thinks about her boyfriend Adrien. Itâs a pity they arenât superheroes, to be honest; theyâd be fantastic, but Ryuukoâs not in any position to make suggestions, so she keeps this to herself.
âDifferent,â Ryuuko finally manages to say. âWe need to not look like superheroes.â
âDisguises!â Ladybug jumps from foot to foot. âIâm so good with disguises! Iâve snuck into the hotel! And a party everyone threw for the guy I liked whoâs now my boyfriend since I wasnât allowed in for being a girl ââ
âWhy, milady, if your boyfriend didnât recognise you beneath your strong disguise, he canât be that much of a keeper,â Chat Noir says.
âMy boyfriend is very much a keeper, thank you very much!â Ladybug huffs. âHeâs one of the smartest people I know! Apart from Ka â uh, my girl ââ
âAkuma,â Ryuuko interjects. Ladybug and Chat Noir jump.
âRight! Akuma!â Ladybug unslings her yo-yo. âThere was a costume store on the next street over! For disguises!â
Getting to the store takes far longer than it should, but since thereâs a giant eye in the sky, Ryuukoâs sure they could be forgiven for having to be extra slow and cautious. Once Ladybugâs shut the doors behind them and dragged over a chair for good measure, the three of them get to work browsing the multitudes of costume clothing and accessories to find the best pieces to conceal their most obvious features.
âI wish all akumas could be this fun,â Chat Noir beams as he tries on a cowboy hat. âTheyâre all get out there, get the crap beat out of us, milady comes up with an amazing plan, weâre done. Not that I donât love the times I get to see Ladybug, of course.â
âI know what you mean,â Ladybug says. Ryuuko slaps a hand over her mouth to smother her giggles at the sight of Ladybug, hero of Paris, wearing a massive blue feather boa and round glasses. âWeâve been doing this for so long that itâs becomeâŚmonotonous, you know? The only real variety is my Charm.â
âNot the akumas?â Ryuuko says as she selects a long blonde wig, then shudders and replaces it after a moment. Too similar to ChloĂŠ Bourgeois. And while they might both be rich girls with mother issues, Ryuuko refuses to think of herself as anything like that spoilt brat, especially after the stunt sheâd pulled as Miracle Queen.
Okay, so Ryuuko doesnât actually remember that, and ChloĂŠ does apparently have some semblance of a heart, but still. Ryuukoâs not known for her forgiveness, especially with how much nastier ChloĂŠâs been since that incident.
âMilady! Milady!â Chat Noir yanks out a ladybug-patterned onesie. âI could be you!â
Ladybug snorts. âIn your dreams, kitty. You could never be me.â
âBut I was once!â Chat Noir tilts his head like a curious kitten would. âRemember?â
âYes, and you were just amazing at it,â Ladybug says dryly.
âYou werenât any better, Lady Noire!â
âExcuse me? I was perfect!â
âExplain the Cata â uh, power mess-up, then!â
âI still had to figure out the Luc â the Charm!â
âAnd I couldâve told you not to dust the sentimonster!â
Ryuuko just ignores their arguing this time. Maybe itâs better for them to get it out now, so that theyâre focused when facing the akuma. She loses track of time as she sifts through the costumes, wondering why sheâs even being so picky in the first place since itâs just to disguise herself from an akuma. Then again, Kagami Tsurugi would never be caught dead in a clown costume, even as Ryuuko. Maybe itâs a good thing to have more refined tastes.
âHey, guys!â Ladybug says. Ryuuko turns to see Ladybug picking up a large box, having dumped its contents on the ground, and she grins and drops it over her head. âLook, Iâm a bug in a box! The perfect disguise! Heâll never know itâs me under here!â
âCome on!â Marinetteâs whisper is marred by giggles as she holds out boxes to Adrien and Kagami. âLetâs hide from your bodyguard in these! Heâll never know itâs us under here!â
In that moment â by the silliest way possible â Ryuuko suddenly knows. Now thereâs a name to the face beneath the scarlet mask; the face with the bright blue eyes and freckles, framed by pigtails â pigtails! â and currently wearing the same silly smile that Ryuuko has seen a thousand times as Kagami and looks forward to seeing a thousand times more.
Oh, itâs too bad that she canât tell Adrien that heâs dating Ladybug. His massive superhero crush on her is more obvious than the fact that thereâs next to nothing in that pretty head of his. Actually, thatâs not fair; Adrien is very smart, but heâs also one of the densest people that Kagami has ever met. Being with him is just like working with Chat Noir, whoâs got a very sharp mind when itâs needed â
âDoes this make me the Chat in the Hat?â Chat Noir says as he dons a top hat and Ladybugâs laughter grows louder.
â but is also far more of an idiot than anyone has the right to be. Itâs a wonder that poor, bi Kagami didnât trip over herself around Chat Noir like she did with Ladybug, considering how similar he is to Adrien â
Ryuuko freezes. No. No way. Thereâs no way all three of them could be that lucky; that Marinette and Adrien, Ladybug and Chat Noir, were pining for each other this whole time, that Ryuuko fell for the two people who happened to be the heroes of Paris, that thereâs a reason why Chat Noir showed her so much care after she was Oni-Chan and why Ladybug was so sweet and understanding of her failures as both Kagami and Ryuuko â
ââ something picked out, Ryuuko?â Ladybugâs â Marinetteâs â voice pierces the fog thatâs descended on Ryuuko and shrouded her thoughts with realisation after realisation as she combs through every memory of her interactions with them. âI mean, this has been really fun, but we probably should get back to doing actual superhero things.â
Ryuuko takes a deep breath to ground herself. Sheâs far better trained than this; she shouldnât allow herself to be so distracted during a mission. âYes, Iâm ready,â she says and grabs the first armful of cloth and accessories that she can find. She can fall apart later. Right now, she has a job to do, and sheâs not going to let her partners down.
2. From Paris
Kagami loves her boyfriend and girlfriend. She really does. But there are times where she wonders if being with them is worth the constant emotional turmoil that they always seem to put her through.
âThe fattoush looks good,â says Adrien, whoâs seated across from Kagami. The fact that heâs wearing a hideous straw brim hat and sunglasses so appalling that they would give his father an aneurysm on the spot is the source of Kagamiâs current agony. âBut Iâm tempted to go for the kibbeh, just because Father would die if he knew that I was eating something fried.â
âDo it,â Marinette says immediately. Kagamiâs pain is compounded by the fact that her girlfriend is wearing a pair of glasses with a large fake nose and moustache attached, along with a sickeningly horrible pink poncho. But then again, for a budding fashion designer to wear something so awful? Maybe sheâs smarter than Kagami had first thought.
Of course she is, says a traitorous little voice in Kagamiâs brain. Sheâs Marinette. Sheâs Ladybug. But even being Ladybug isnât enough to save her from Kagamiâs judgement. Why couldnât Adrien and Marinette have just worn an oversized hoodie like she did?
Okay, so itâs Adrienâs oversized hoodie, and the smell of him envelops her like a warm hug whenever she ducks her face down beneath the collar, but still.
âDone,â Adrien says and slams his menu down. The couple at the next table over stare at him, but his disguise seems to work because they might think heâs a weirdo, but they donât appear to think that he could be Adrien Agreste. âWhat about you, Gami?â
As always, Kagamiâs insides flutter at Adrienâs use of his and Marinetteâs nickname for her. She clears her throat and squints down at her menu, which may as well be written in English what with how nothing seems to compute in her brain, and she blurts out the first thing she sees. âShish barak.â
Marinette wrinkles her nose. âSure, if youâre into yoghurt.â
âDoes that mean youâre gonna steal just my food?â Adrien complains. âMaybe I should order the shish barak too, so you leave my food alone.â Heâs promptly shut down by Marinette giving him a quick kiss on the cheek.
âAnd Iâll have the djaj mashwi,â she says, while Kagami ponders the merits of slamming her head on the table at the sheer display of Ladybug and Chat Noir energy from her two oblivious idiots. âIâm in the mood for chicken.â
Kagami pushes all thoughts of clobbering her partnersâ heads together away as Adrien plays foot wrestling with her under the table and Marinette waves a waiter over to order. For now, sheâs just going to enjoy this silly date in their silly disguises.
3. From Lila
Sheâs everywhere.
Sheâs hanging off Adrien on his way to fencing. Sheâs tangling their legs together when she crashes their study dates. Sheâs smothering the air around them with her cloying citrusy perfume as she laughs far too loudly at Adrienâs joke during a friendsâ hangout.
And thereâs nothing that Adrien can do about it. If he does one thing that even hints at defiance, Lila Rossi will go running straight back to tattle to his father like the venomous little muse she is. Even the fact that Adrienâs taken â by two people â has done nothing to dissuade her. If anything, she takes this as an open invitation.
âOh, this kind of thing is very common in Italy!â Lila had crooned one day when Kagami had â very politely, in her opinion, since no swords were involved â asked her to please take her hands off Kagamiâs and Marinetteâs boyfriend, thank you very much. âIt was so good to learn that Adrien had two girlfriends! Thereâs so much love in his heartâŚand so much room for moreâŚâ
Itâs a sunny afternoon after school when Kagami finally snaps. Not at Lila; no, she knows very well what Gabriel would do in retaliation if his precious spy was hurt in any way. Rather, as soon as fencing is over and sheâs changed out of her sweaty gear, she barges into the boysâ bathroom with her heavier-than-usual fencing bag.
âKagami!â Adrien yelps and slaps his hands over his nipples. Kagami rolls her eyes.
âYou donât have breasts, Adrien,â she says with every ounce of patience that sheâs had to curate since learning her partnersâ secret identities. âAnd itâs nothing that Marinette and I havenât seen before. Speaking of Marinette, hurry up and get dressed.â
âWhy?â Adrien hurries to throw on his top, further confirming Kagamiâs suspicion that heâs started changing after fencing as slowly as possible to put off the moment he has to leave and be accosted by Lila. âIs she hurt? Did Lila or ChloĂŠ throw her over the balcony or something?â
âNot yet,â Kagami mutters. She rummages in her fencing bag for Adrienâs oversized hoodie that sheâsâŚahem, delayed returning. Because she has definitely intended to return it. Eventually. Which is now. âSheâs letting LilaâŚspout hot air? Is that the saying?â
âAnd you left them alone together?â Adrien snatches his hoodie and tries to yank it on so quickly that his head ends up caught in the sleeve with his arm. Sighing, Kagami helps him correct his mistake while trying as hard as possible not to let her fond smile at her boyfriendâs dorkiness slip through.
âMarinette can handle herself.â Kagami fishes out a pair of sunglasses and a green baseball cap. âItâs Lila Iâd be worried about. In any case, sheâs keeping Lila occupied, but thereâs only so much threatening and bragging that Lila can do before she grows bored.â
âThen whatâs â?â
âWeâre sneaking you out. Come on.â
Kagami tugs Adrien over to one of the tiny windows in the bathroom. Then, in one smooth movement, she crouches and cups her hands for Adrienâs foot. Gritting her teeth and drawing on every bit of athletic strength she has, she propels Adrien up to the window and locks herself in place so that he can pop the latch and push the window open.
âDamn it!â Adrien curses when the locker room door opens. Kagami prays itâs not â
âAdrien?â Lilaâs sickly-sweet voice echoes in the locker room. Thank goodness for bathroom doors, or sheâd have caught them in a heartbeat. âWhere are you? I didnât see you walk out.â
With newfound fervour and a boost from Kagami, Adrien grabs the windowsill and propels himself upwards. He almost doesnât fit â Kagami holds her breath when he ends up stuck halfway out and curses â but then he forces out a loud breath of air for just that little less abdominal width and manages to slide fully out the window. Kagami just has to assume that heâs fine and has no serious injuries from his landing, although being hurt would probably be preferable to him over dealing with Lila.
She gives it to the count of ten, then flushes a random toilet and washes her hands before pushing the bathroom door open. Lila immediately materialises in front of her.
âKagami! Hi!â Lila says with a very fox-like smile. âI wasnât expecting you to use the boysâ bathroom.â
Kagami shrugs. âAfter you called me a boy with boobs the other day, I figured it shouldnât matter if I used the boysâ bathroom. Thereâs really no difference except for the urinals. And the stench. I wouldnât recommend it.â
âOh, I was only teasing.â Lila sounds like she was doing anything but. âWhereâs Adrien? Heâs usually finished changing by now.â
âI donât know,â Kagami says with another shrug. âHeâs not in the bathroom either, though. You can go and see for yourself.â
Before Lila can take up any more of her precious time, Kagami brushes past her and out of the locker room. As soon as the door swings shut behind her, she lets her giggle break free into her hand and pulls out her phone to check in with her accomplices â er, her partners. Now she truly understands the saying âbeing bad has never felt so goodâ.
4. From an akuma take 2
âI seriously want to know what goes through Hawkmothâs mind half the time,â Misterbug complains. He deflects a burst of pink perfume with his yo-yo, then ducks so that Lady Noire can jab Princess Fragrance with her staff. âLike, remember the days we thought he was Mr Agreste? And then I realised âno, he canât be, because Mr Agreste at least has some creativity!ââ
Ryuuko isnât sure whether she wants to pat Misterbug on the head in agreement or slap him to get his head back in the game. To be fair to Hawkmoth, Puppeteer had been one of his most powerful akumas with her ability to control someone if she has a doll or similar representation of them, so akumatising her for a third time isnât too foolish of a move. And considering that Ladybug and Chat Noir merchandise is very widespread, the decision to swap their Miraculouses like with Reflekdoll had been inevitable. Ryuukoâs never been more grateful that sheâs not considered a steady enough temporary hero to have merchandise made of her, so thereâs no way for Puppeteer to control her.
If sheâs honest, Ryuuko canât really scold Misterbug for not fully focusing. Not when she has to spend a whole mission with her girlfriend in a tight black catsuit. And while Ryuuko is very much asexual, only a fool would deny the sheer beauty of Marinette Dupain-Cheng with a long braid and a suit sculpted to her body and an uncharacteristic smirk on her face thatâs much more reminiscent of Chat Noir than Ladybug. If Ryuuko had even an iota of artistic skill, sheâd spend hours just trying to capture Marinetteâs beauty in all forms, starting with the feline goddess whoâs just managed to trick Silencer and Jackady into hitting each other. Silencer immediately starts to cluck like a chicken, while Jackady frantically starts shuffling his cards, trying to make his power work without his voice.
âHeads up!â Tortue Verteâs shield whizzes over Lady Noireâs head and nails Darkblade right in the face. She whoops and punches the air. âStrike! I could so get used to this.â
âAs hot as you look in my colours, babe,â says Foxtrot, using his flute to keep panther Animanâs jaws away from him while heâs sprawled on the road, âI kinda miss Rena. And using the shield. Never thought itâd suck to have merch of me.â
Knowing that Ladybug is Marinette, Ryuukoâs almost certain of the identities of Tortue Verte and Foxtrot, aka Rena Rouge and Carapace. But considering that theyâre in the middle of a battle and there are several brainwashing akuma puppets, she buries that thought very deep down and instead focuses on deflecting one of Reverserâs paper planes with her sword. Thereâll be time later to muse on secret identities, when theyâre not in the heat of one of the most chaotic battles that Paris has ever seen.
5. From Gabriel
Death is far too good for Gabriel Agreste.
âBreaking up with Adrien is the last thing weâre going to do,â Kagami says as Marinette sobs hysterically into her chest on the soft pink chaise. The anger simmering beneath her skin is almost at boiling point, threatening to bubble over and explode out of her, and her crying girlfriend is the only thing keeping her grounded. One of them has to be on the lookout for akumas, and itâs most definitely not going to be Marinette in her current state.
âB-But you heard M-Mr Agreste,â Marinette chokes out. âHeâll p-pull Adrien from school. And â your m-mother â weâre j-just a d-distraction to you â he said she told him ââ
âRubbish.â Kagami runs her fingers through Marinetteâs hair and presses a soft kiss to her head. So many years of being hard, of compartmentalising her irrelevant and distracting emotions to please her mother, to live up to the Tsurugi name, and then sheâd met the boy and girl of her dreams and now sheâs alive, and she feels so strongly, and no one is going to take this away from her. What is honour if it means turning her back on those who need her? On those she cares about?
âB-But ââ
âNo. Marinette, listen to me.â Kagami cups Marinetteâs cheek and guides her face up. The sight of her girlfriendâs red-rimmed blue eyes is enough for the poisonous rage inside her to almost break free, but she forces it back down as though itâs a rabid animal on a leash. If Marinette gets akumatised, all is lost; not only because sheâs Ladybug, but because sheâs one of the kindest, sweetest, most amazing people that Kagami has ever had the fortune to meet. And if Kagami gets akumatised, the emotional toll of having to defeat and purify her will more than likely be too much for Marinette to bear after everything else thatâs happened today.
âKagamiâŚ?â
Kagami blinks and shakes her head to clear her tumultuous thoughts. Later. She can process her own emotions later. For now, Marinette needs her.
âIâve never been more focused since meeting you and Adrien,â Kagami says. âAnd if Mother even tries to argue, I have a whole presentation prepared. Iâm serious. I have it saved on my flash drive.â
Marinette lets out a weak giggle. Kagami basks in the glow of this laughter, as tiny as it is, because itâs tangible proof that, as awful as she can be interacting with other people, sheâs improving. She knows enough to support one of the people dearest to her.
âMother might not have been happy, but she didnât try and interfere,â Kagami continues. âShe said that so long as my focus did not waver, she would give me her tentative blessing. I suspect that Adrienâs father has spoken to her and persuaded her that you are a negative influence on me and Adrien. That will change once I talk to her.â
âAndâŚAdrien?â
âWeâll work it out.â Kagami leans in and leaves a soft little kiss on the top of Marinetteâs nose, and sheâs rewarded with another watery yet musical giggle. âThe only thing weâre not going to do is break up with him. That will crush him. Weâre going to tell him exactly what his father said.â
âWe canât!â Marinette jerks back and almost topples backward off her chaise, if not for Kagamiâs arms around her. âMr Agreste will pull him out of school and heâll never get to see his friends again and heâll know itâs all my fault and heâll be unhappy for the rest of his life and end up turning to evil and working with Hawkmoth and weâll never marry him and have three kids â more if you want them but I want three and theyâll be Emma and Hugo and Louis â and a hamster called ââ
âHow do you even have enough breath to say all of that?â Kagami says, trying not to pass out just from following Marinetteâs catastrophising ramblings. Marinette laughs rather hysterically.
âItâs a gift. But we canât tell him! Heâd refuse to break up and Iâd be responsible for him losing everything!â
âShouldnât he have that choice?â Kagami says. âEveryone around him tries to control him. Adrien deserves to be able to make that choice. And this isnât solely on your shoulders. Weâre both dating him.â
âButâŚhow do we talk to him?â Marinette whispers. Now sheâs slumping against Kagami with fluttering eyes, as though sheâd just participated in an extremely strenuous bout of fencing and is two minutes from passing out. Considering her anxiety-ridden ramblings from just before, she probably has exerted that much energy, just mentally rather than physically. âHis father will never let him out. Weâd have to stand at the front door, and heâd know as soon as we tried to talk to Adrien.â
âWe default to our usual plan.â Kagami gently untangles herself from Marinette so that she can cross over to Marinetteâs wardrobe and start rummaging inside. âDisguises.â
âBut what good is that going to do?â
âPlausible deniability. Adrienâs bodyguard is a very firm ally, but even he canât ignore direct orders. However, if he allowed Adrien out to talk to some friends instead of his girlfriendsâŚâ
âOf course!â Marinette breathes. Kagami is suddenly tackled from behind and is forced to throw her hands out and grab the sides of Marinetteâs wardrobe to prevent herself from faceplanting. âGami, youâre a genius! I love you, I love you, I love you!â
The poisonous anger that had been burning through Kagamiâs body dissipates at Marinetteâs words and gives way to soft warmth, like the sun is shining inside her. Once her legs are steady underneath her, she turns and wraps her arms around Marinette, whoâs now trying to plaster every inch of her face with kisses.
âI had to bring something to this relationship, didnât I?â Kagami says. âYou and Adrien are far too chaotic to be left alone. Come on, help me pick out some disguises so we can go and talk to Adrien.â
+1
Kagami had never imagined that Hawkmothâs defeat would go this way.
It was supposed to be glorious. A fantastic final battle full of clashing superpowers and pumping adrenaline.
But no. Adrien had caught a glimpse of Nooroo â Hawkmothâs kwami â during a visit to his fatherâs office to confront Gabriel for his stunt regarding Marinette and Kagami and trying to break the three of them up. From there, it had been far too easy for Ladybug and Chat Noir to simply sneak in and steal the Butterfly Miraculous after Adrien had somehow slipped some sleeping pills into his fatherâs expensive whiskey.
(Or rather, Plagg had done that part, but Kagamiâs not supposed to know about her boyfriend being Chat Noir, so sheâs considerately refrained from pointing out the flaws in the âofficialâ story).
Gabriel and Nathalie â aka Mayura â had been arrested the following day. In the wake of their arrests, Kagami had thought that Adrien would jump at the chance to be done with them and pretend they never existed. But her boyfriend had proven that, despite the years of emotional abuse heâd been forced to endure, heâs still got one of the biggest hearts that Kagami has ever seen.
âI love them,â Adrien had whispered into a midnight three-way cuddle, finally allowed to crack and break down after so much time fearing the consequences of emotional vulnerability. âAfter everything they did to ParisâŚto meâŚthereâs a part of me that stillâŚI donât want to forgive them, but I donât want to hate them. I just want them toâŚnot be. You know?â
And that leads to now. Kagami, Alya, and Nino have been gathered in Adrienâs temporary suite in Le Grand Paris, where heâs been staying until his bodyguard can be awarded permanent custody since Emilie Agreste had been laid to rest just days before.
âThank you for coming,â Ladybug begins, wringing her hands. âI know that there wasnât really a final battle or anything ââ
âPity,â Nino mutters. âBeen looking forward to smacking that guy in the face for years.â
ââ but I still wanted to thank you for stepping up and putting yourselves on the line,â Ladybug continues, while Chat Noirâs lips twitch at Ninoâs comment. âI trust the other heroes, of course, but you three are, wellâŚIâd trust you with my life. And with what Chat Noir and I are about to reveal.â
Chat Noirâs lips quirk again, but itâs hollow. A small part of Kagami wonders if itâs appropriate for her to know exactly why, when even his own superhero partner doesnât know.
âEven though Hawkmoth and Mayura are gone, thereâs still so much to do with the Miraculouses,â Ladybug says. âPetty crimes, little acts of goodnessâŚand figuring out how to do this whole Guardian thing. Part of that is not leaving the kwamis locked up in the Box for centuries. So, now that Hawkmoth is gone, and identities arenât an issue anymoreâŚâ
Alya almost faints when Ladybug retrieves the Fox Miraculous from her yo-yo and holds it out. She stretches her hand out to take it, pauses with her fingers right above the golden chain, and she only snatches it away and hugs it to her chest with squeals of ecstasy when Ladybug smiles and nods. Nino actually yanks Ladybug in for a tight hug when she gives him the Turtle Miraculous before letting go to talk to the turtle kwami that had materialised, just as Alya is currently chatting away to the fox kwami so fast that her words are almost just a buzzing sound.
It takes every ounce of willpower for Kagami to not lose her composure and shriek when Ladybug presents her with the Dragon Miraculous. Instead, she forces herself to contain the energy thatâs vibrating beneath her very skin, and she bows her head and accepts the choker from her masked girlfriend.
âGreetings, Kagami-san!â Longg says once sheâs appeared in a flash of red light. âI am thrilled that you are to be my permanent holder!â
âAs am I, Longg-sama,â Kagami says with a smile and holds out a hand for Longg to settle on.
âNow that thatâs out of the way,â Ladybug says when Kagami, Alya, and Nino have finally exhausted themselves from excitement, âChat Noir and I have something that we want to tell you.â
Chat Noir reaches out and takes Ladybugâs hand with a small smile. Alya looks like sheâs going to burst with excitement, but thatâs nothing compared to her reaction after Ladybug and Chat Noir utter their next words.
âSpots off.â
âClaws in.â
As soon as their transformation lights fade, it becomes painfully obvious that they hadnât revealed themselves to each other before this moment. Alyaâs screaming â muffled into a pillow to avoid security rushing up to them â and Ninoâs wordless gaping are to be expected. Whatâs not expected is the way Marinette and Adrien take one look at each other, then squeal and jump apart.
âOh my god, itâs you!â they bellow. Their kwamis, meanwhile, are doubled over in mid-air with laughter.
âDude!â Nino holds up his hands with the look of someone whoâs doing ten equations at once in their heads while being utterly awful at mathematics.
âMy best friend is Ladybug!â Alya shrieks. âSince when? How the hell didnât you two figure it out from being together? Is that why you gave me the Fox? And missed class all the time? And all the times you flaked â you were off being Ladybug â my best friend ââ
Kagami just stands in the centre of this storm and smiles down at Longg.
âAnd you!â Alya jabs a finger at Kagami. âHow the hell did you manage to land Ladybug and Adrien Agreste? Tell us mere mortals your secret!â
âYouâre not even surprised?â Marinette splutters. âHow did you â?â
âBecause unlike others in this roomâŚâ Kagami takes a step forward and leans in. Marinette and Adrien lean back with wide eyes and pink cheeks. âI have a brain cell.â Then she leans back and savours the mixture of indignation and awe on her partnersâ faces. She might pay for this later, but for now? Sheâs going to savour this sweet, sweet victory while she can, before Marinette and Adrien team up to punish her.
She wonât complain too much, though. Sheâs sure theyâll work out an appropriate punishmentâŚlike kissing her until her brain melts. She can live with that.

There were plenty of benefits to being Chat Noir. Getting to escape from his house with a mere transformation, jumping from rooftop to rooftop without so much as a care in the world, and spending countless hours perched at the top of the Eiffel tower during sunset were all among Adrienâs favorite things to do when he was free.
However, he had to admit that hanging out with Marinette far surpassed everything else, even if he didnât quite exactly know why yet. It could be attributed to a number of things really, from the fact that they were in the same class, and sat only a breath away from each other most days of the week, to their dating best friends that often threw the two into the ever-exciting activity of third-wheeling. She had become such a constant presence in his life that when she wasnât around, it felt like he needed to go out and fill that void himself. Or perhaps Adrien was more interested in the way her personality shifted when Chat Noir was in front of her, bold and snarky and confident in all the ways their classmates had told him about before but he hadnât seen for his own eyes without the mask.
In any case, something about her kept making Adrien come back, even if it meant for awkward entrances.
âChat?â Marinette asks, bending over the railing to see him.
Adrien was in the midst of climbing up to reach her, one gloved hand gripping a metal baluster while the other extended out to get hold of the railingâs top bar.
âHello to you too princess,â he says, moving his head up to look at her. Marinette had already taken her pigtails out for the night, and in the cool summer breeze her hair swayed with the wind as she stood there, watching him grow closer.
âJust what are you doing here, Chat? You should be in bed and asleep, or did you forget that itâs a school night?â
âThat,â Adrien responds, reaching the top and perching himself on the railing, âis exactly why Iâm here.â
Taking a step back and crossing her arms, Marinette looks up at him. âReally? Thatâs why?â
âOf course!â Adrien exclaims, frowning. âWhy would you doubt your knight in shining armor?â
âYouâre wearing leather,â she corrects.
He waves a hand in the air. âWe can ignore the tiny details. Anyways, this knight got word that your class is having a test tomorrow, and what better way to help out a princess than by helping her study?â
âYou donât even know what class itâs for,â Marinette says, even as she started walking to the trapdoor leading to her room. âOr that I even have a test.â
âSure I do. Alya made a blog post all about it.â
And, Adrien adds in his head, I was there in class when Mme. Mendeleiev announced it.
She didnât need to know that bit though. Passing it off as something Alya posted (which she had, luckily) was the perfect cover Adrien needed that wouldnât set off any alarms in Marinetteâs head, nor risk revealing his identity. Who knew just how embarrassing it'd be if she were to find out that Adrien was behind the mask, going out of his way and finding any excuse to be at her side?
Not to mention, Ladybug would have his tail strung up for everyone in Paris to see if it ever happened.
âYou know,â Marinette tells him, glancing back at him, âIâm going to start Alya to stop posting all the intimate things about our school life if you're just going to use it as an excuse to see me. Or better yet, I'll tell Ladybug and see what she does about you.â
âPlenty of girls in Paris would be head over heels to have the Chat Noir at their balcony, offering to tutor them in the dead of night,â he says, hands resting on the back of his head as he began to follow after her.
âThen why aren't you chasing after them instead?â
Pausing, Adrien looks up at the sky, gazing up at the stars before letting his gaze drop back down to Marinette.
âGood question,â he says. I'll let you know when I find out.â
âI'll be expecting an answer by the next time you come over then.â
âSo you'll be expecting then?â
Dropping down into the trapdoor, Marinette pokes her head out. âDepends. Help me ace this test and you can come over every day.â
âAnd if you don't?â
âYou'll be stuck meowing on my balcony for all of Paris to hear.â
He grins, continuing to go after her. âThen I guess it's a good thing you'll be acing this test.â
-
âAll I'm saying is, Chat Noir somehow always magically appears whenever we're out,â Alya says, looking suspiciously at the cat-eared hero while she took another sip of her drink. âThere's no reasonable explanation for that.â
Shrugging nonchalantly, Adrien lifts his own drink to his lips, attempting to stay cool. âWho's to say you guys aren't the ones seeking me out?â
He's lying, of course. After fencing practice had been canceled for the day and Gorilla was luckily uninformed by the change in schedule, Adrien decided to take advantage of the free hour under his belt and visit the local cafe he knew would be inhabited by his group of friends. Of course, walking around as himself would do no good, so slipping into the suit was always the better option, a wonderful alternative he had equipped several other times when he couldn't join them as Adrien.
âHe makes a good point, Alya,â Nino says, nodding at him. âWho's to say this isn't just a coincidence?â
âWe've ran into him no less than five times, and he's joined us to hang out for three. I don't see Ladybug suddenly popping up anywhere.â
âLadybugâs probably just busy doing Ladybug things,â Marinette says, entering the conversation. âIt must be tiring to be a superhero with all the press conferences and security gigs.â
She had been mainly quiet while the rest spoke, for what Adrien guessed was to not draw any suspicion her way should the two of them seem a little bit too chummy. That didn't mean Marinette wasn't throwing him any glares when Alya and Nino weren't watching, clearly hoping he'd leave them alone before either of them slipped up and filled them in on his regular visits.
âLadybug things?â Alya repeats, laughing. âIf she's so busy doing stuff, then why isn't Chat Noir just as jam packed? Last I heard, he's the other half of their crime fighting duo, right?â
âWell, I'm more the face, don't you think?â Adrien says, wiggling his cat ears. âParis deserves to have at least one of their beloved heroes walking around every now and then.â
âParis, Chat? OrâŚâ Alya trails off.
Nino looks at her, brows furrowing. âOr?â
Alya leans towards the table, eyes narrowing as she looks at Adrien. He squirms, suit squeaking against the chair and suddenly very self conscious of the fact that he was the most noticeable person in the room. Looking over at Marinette, he widens his eyes hoping she would intervene and lend a hand.
Instead, she gives just a small smile before turning her head, going into conversation with Nino.
Huffing, Alya sinks back into her seat. âNevermind,â she finally says. âI guess not after all.â
âWhat was that about?â Adrien asks Marinette when he gets the chance, whispering to her while Alya and Nino are talking to the waiter.
âBeats me,â she answers. Reaching over for his menu, she flips it open and begins to skim. âWhat are you getting to eat? That is, if you're sticking around long enough for that.â
âWho's to say I wouldn't?â
Marinette nudges him, voice dropping as she speaks. âWell, you have quite a schedule to keep up with, right? Walking around Paris and entertaining all it's patrons must be a lot of work.â
âA tart or two won't get in the way of that. Or,â he perks up, âmaybe even some quiches.â
âIf it's pastries and quiches you want, wouldn't you be better just dropping by and collecting a few freshly baked ones later? I do live right above a bakery, after all.â
âAre those guaranteed?â
âDepends. Maybe another cat will show up and nab them first.â
âYou wouldn't. That's impossible.â
Shrugging, Marinette goes back to the menu. âGuess we'll just have to find out.â
Intent on getting the promised goods, he shows up to her balcony just as the sun slips underneath the horizon that day, leant up against her railing and ring recharged.
âI can't believe you actually came,â Marinette says, placing a platter of treats down on the balcony chair and shaking her head at him.
âCan't have you feeding other cats. It would wound my heart too much.â Placing a heart to his chest, he lets out an exasperated sigh.
She snorts, hand going to her hip. âDon't be so dramatic.â
âMe? Dramatic? Never.â
âThat's maybe the biggest lie I've heard from you yet. And in any case,â she continues, âyou have absolutely nothing to worry about.â
âI don't?â
âOf course.â Marinette knocks her head to the side, smiling. âThere's only one kitty for me anyways.â
Adrien feels his cheeks go warm, flustered enough that he glances away from her and hopes the lack of light doesn't give him away. It's a weird moment, such a sharp turn from his usual antics. Typically, it was Marinette who grew red at his silly jokes and half-attempted flirts, or shrugged off his advances and continued on with the night. He rarely ever had to worry about the tables being turned on him, and never at such a simple statement coming from her lips.
Nonetheless, it was something new for him to worry about, to chip away at until he got his full answer. Maybe then, once he figured it out, he'd even get the chance to uncover more about Marinette as well.
Or so, he hoped he would.
-
A week later, gazing out his window to the Parisian scenery down below, Adrien finally gets his answer. It's a sudden realization and a shock, enough to nearly make him yell out in excitement and open the window to shout out to the streets for everyone to hear. However, too dumbstruck and in awe to actually follow through with it, he elects instead to simply say it, a task that almost seems just as challenging to go through with.
âI'm in love with Marinette.â
Rolling his eyes, Plagg takes a bite from his wedge of cheese, unbothered and lookino bored at his holder. âI could've told you that.â
Adrien huffs, turning to the kwami on the windowpane. âI'm being serious, you know.â
âSo am I.â Swallowing, Plagg goes in for any bite and waves the remaining cheese in the air as he talks. âAnyone with a brain could see how big you've been crushing on her - or for that matter, how crazy she gets around you, mask on or not.â
âYou're kidding,â Adrien says, jaw going slack. âMarinette would never.â
âDoes it really look like Iâm the type to kid?â Plagg retorts. âAnd if it took you this long to figure out you liked her, it's no wonder you didn't get that she liked you back before.â
Pausing, Adrien frowns. Plagg was right. It had taken Adrien some time to piece all of the puzzle together, to narrow down each section until they painted a clear picture and read out what he had been searching for all along. To finally uncover a bit of the enigma that surrounded his interest and intrigue and need to be near Marinette, why he so often sought her out beyond better judgement. It made sense why he hadn't been able to fully devote his time and energy on figuring out how Marinette felt as well, even if it was embarrassing to admit he missed while even Plagg figured it out in the meanwhile.
He'd have to make good of his realizations however. Knowledge rarely did anyone any good when they didn't act on it, and given how long it took him to reach this far, Adrien was better off taking the leap now before he got caught up in his own brain again. Turning to Plagg, Adrien opens his mouth.
âIf you're going to tell me to transform you so you can see Marinette, you better promise you'll throw in an extra wheel of Camembert later,â Plagg says, taking in the last piece of his cheese and beating Adrien to the chase. âIt's very tiring juggling romance with the life saving part of this job.â
âGive me just enough time to talk to her before the ring starts blinking and I have to detransform, and Iâll buy you an extra crate of cheese.â
âWhat are we waiting around for then? Go and say the transformation already!â
Laughing, Adrien opens the window. The sun was beginning to go down, and based on the usual length of time it took to cross Paris and reach the bakery itâd be long down by the time he got there.
An almost perfect setting for a confession, he thought, save for one last detail.
It takes some time to find the perfect rose to give her, but an hour later, holding it out to her under the blanket of stars and city smog, Adrien finds that it was worth the hunt, and more than worth the wait after so long trying to find the answer.

"Why didn't we introduce them sooner?" Â Alya wonders, draping herself over Nino's back and watching Kagami thrash Max at his own game.
Literally. Â It's his own game. Â Kagami's beating Max at a game Max programmed.
Alya's not as surprised by this as she maybe should be. Â Kagami has a competitive streak that puts even Marinette's to shame.
"It definitely did not occur to me that they'd hit if off this hard." Â Nino tilts his head, eyebrows shooting up as Kagami uses a move that she definitely learned from Marinette to take Max's Gamer out.

Chapter Summary: Â Alya knows her boyfriend pretty well. After one particularly harrowing Akuma battle, a few little similarities between her wonderful boyfriend and a certain superhero make her realize what should have been obvious from the start.
Word Count: 802
Rena landed next to Chat, then froze. The Akuma had a death grip on Nino, yelling about how he had stolen something from them. Confused she looked at Chat who only shrugged.
âI think itâs a case of mistaken identity. Thereâs no way Nino would have stolen anyoneâs girlfriend.â
Rena's head snapped up. "WHAT?"
Chat smacked the Akuma on the back and flipped over it. "Look, I doubt it's this guy's fault that your girlfriend was unhappy."
With a roar, the Akuma threw Nino at Chat, who had already leaped away.
"NINO!" Rena screamed as she swooped in to grab him. Her fingers grazed his as the ground rushed to meet them. Suddenly, the line from Ladybug's yo-yo wrapped around him. As he was pulled up, he did a surprisingly familiar roll. Rena flipped around and landed next to him, her mind racing. "What the hell Nino? You need to be more careful! Why would this Akuma think you were trying to steal his girlfriend?"
The miraculous ladybugs rushed around them as Nino looked at where the detransformed Akuma was "I dunno!! I swear I've never seen the guy before! But donât worry about me, getting thrown around by Akumas isnât a new thing."
Before she could say anything Ladybug spoke up. âLetâs get you home Nino.â
The next day Alya flopped into her seat. That Akuma attack had cut into her homework time so she had stayed up really late to finish. Nino gave her a weary nod as he sat down, a zombie Adrien following close behind.
âWow, you guys look as good as I feel. Up late with that homework too?â
Nino groaned, âIf I ever have to write another essay about music theory, itâll be too soon. Iâd rather sit through Ms. Mendelivâs pop quizzes.â
Adrien snickered, âI would have thought that would be right up your alley.â
âNah. I prefer the practical application, not the essay type. Give me a board and Iâll show you how this âtheoryâ stuff should be done.â
âDid you finish the math homework?â
Alya laughed at Ninoâs horrified expression. âRelax, Adrien is trolling you. Itâs due tomorrow.â
âAlllyaaa, quit ruining my fun.â
Nino smacked Adrien with his hat, âWhy you gotta be like that?â, as they both burst into laughter. Just then everyoneâs phones went off with an Akuma alert. Adrien sagged as everyone gathered up their belongings.
âHey dude, wanna come to my place to hang out? Anything would be better than sitting home alone.â
âThanks Nino, but I canât. Nathalie would have seen that. Iâm sure my driver will be outside. Iâll see you guys tomorrow.â
Alya shook her head as Nino tried to say something else. âNowâs not the time to argue about it. Be safe Adrien. Nino, you coming?â
They ran out of the school and tried to stay as close to the walls as possible. Alya saw a shadow pass overhead and risked a glance up to see Ladybug running across the rooftops. Ladybug caught her eye and gave a quick nod.
Pulling out her phone she yelled to Nino as she ran off, âHey look thereâs Ladybug! Iâm going to see if I can get some good shots for the blog!â
Nino yelled something but she was already in an alley a few streets over and transforming.
Rena ran across the rooftops trying to see where the Akuma had gone. She heard the sounds of fighting off to her left and veered that way, scanning the area continuously. She landed next to Chat Noir and Ladybug nodded.
"Good, you're here! Help Chat with the distraction. I need to get someone."
Rena shot her a look of surprise. "We're not good enough for you?"
Ladybug paused for a moment then shook her head with a chuckle. "You're the best but we need some protection."
Chat snickered, "Better go get the Turtle man. Well all be old and grey by the time he gets here."
The Akuma screamed at them as Chat and Rena took off in opposite directions, taunting it. A few minutes later Ladybug appeared with Carapace and they jumped into the fray.
âAbout time you showed up, I thought we were going to be a shell of ourselves!â
Rena whacked Chat with her flute. âNowâs not the time for that Kitty Cat!â
With a pout, Chat whined, âReennnaaa, why do you have to ruin my fun?â
Rena sent him an odd look, but the Akuma demanded their attention.
Carapace jumped in front of her after a particularly hard hit. She sent him a wink. âHey cutie. Come here often?â
He began spluttering and flushed bright red, âLook, youâre a great girl. Woman! Lady! I mean, maâam!! I have a great girlfriend already.â
Smiling softly, she planted a soft kiss on his nose. âYou sure do.â

Summary:Â Walking back home one night, Alya spots Marinette letting Chat Noir into her room. Alya and Nino accidentally uncover a bit more than expected when confronting their friend about the situation.
X
âNino, Iâm fine. This isnât the first time Iâve walked back home alone.â Alya held her phone close to her ear as she glanced from side to side, watching for cars before crossing the sidewalk.
She was passing by her old college, Francois Dupont, which meant she had only a ten-minute walk left until she got home safe and sound.
Unfortunately, Nino wasnât having any of that.
âYeah, you do, but normally youâre walking in the daylight not the middle of the night!â Nino exclaimed on the other end. She could just imagine him pacing in his room, worrying about her. Nino was super sweet and she loved that he cared so much, but times, like this, it could be really annoying.
âI didnât mean to stay so long at the library on purpose, but hey, at least I didnât stay until dawn again! Plus this time I called you,â Alya pointed out.
The library Alya had just come from was this new 24 hour one that opened up. They had regular library hours, but if you wanted to stay behind and do your own research they let you pay for a membership. Alya had jumped on the opportunity as soon as she heard that they had a whole section on superheroes. There had been many times when she either stayed at the library all night or fallen asleep and Nora had to come pick her up because it got too late.
Tonight she really tried to leave at a decent time. She had even set an alarm, but that darn snooze button would be the death of her. She had been doing some research on past Ladybug miraculous users for the Ladyblog, and by her probably 10th time pressing snooze, she had noticed a bunch of college-aged students glaring at her. She had packed up everything really quickly and exited the building before checking the time on her phone. It had been 11:00 P.M.
âDo I have to start coming with you to make sure this stops happening?â
Alya rolled her eyes as she stopped at the crosswalk not too far from the Dupain-Cheng bakery. The bakery lights were off, but she could see Marinetteâs bedroom light still on. Hmm. Maybe she could throw pebbles at her window like a little Romeo. But then Marinette would convince her to stay the night and she couldnât afford to do that.
âNo, dad. Iâm fine. In fact, Iâm about to pass by MarineeeâŚâ Alya trailed off, staring blankly at Marinetteâs balcony.
Alya watched as Chat Noir landed on top of the balcony. He knocked twice before Marinetteâs head poked out of the trapdoor and she kissed him on the cheek before moving so Chat could enter her room.
âAlya?! Are you there? Whatâs wrong?â Ninoâs panicked voice interrupted Alyaâs racing thoughts.
Alya gulped as the crosswalk light turned green, but she didnât move an inch too scared that she might unravel what she just witnessed.
âNino, I think Marinette is dating Chat Noir.â
                              XXX
No one could ever say Nino never supported Alya.
Alya wanted to be the power duo at Just Dance? He broke out his best dancing shoes and helped her climb to the top.
Alya wanted to chase akumas? Nino was there by her side, making sure she didnât kill herself in the process.
Alya wanted to be a superhero? Nino was Rena Rougeâs number one fan and everyone knew it.
Alya wanted to help track down Hawkmoth? Well, Nino was more than happy to give the old fart a piece of his mind.
But when Alya suggested her best friend was dating the cat-themed superhero of Paris? Well, that was just a little too hard for him to believe.
Ignoring the fact that Marinette has a giant crush on his best friend, Chat Noir just wasnât her type. Marinette never seemed to be interested in the boastful arrogant types. At least from what he remembered about her. But then again he could be wrong about her. Heck, he could even be wrong about Chat Noir. Yet none of that even began to explain why the two of them would be spending time with each other that they would start to even date.
It just made 0 sense.
âNnnniiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnnnooooooooooo,â Alya drawled. âI know what I saw. Marinette kissed Chat Noir and then proceeded to let him into her room!â
âMaybe it isnât what you think it is?â Nino suggested hopefully.
âWhat am I supposed to think, Nino!? That my best friend is just sneaking a boy in a leather-looking magical catsuit into her room in the middle of the night for the heck of it?â
Nino shrugged. âThey could just be friends who are hanging out? Chat Noir doesnât always have to parade around as Parisâ superhero. Heâs probably just a normal everyday person and Marinette decided to help him feel normal. I mean Marinette is super nice about those things.â
âBut the kiss! The Kiss, Nino!â
âUhh...maybe theyâre friendly? I mean weâre French. We kiss in greeting.â
Alya gave Nino a deadpanned look.
âWhat else am I supposed to say? There are so many other logical explanations for why Marinette would kiss Chat Noir as he snuck into her bedroom.â Nino paused for a second. âOkay, that sounded really bad as I said it, but câmon Alya. You really think Marinette would start dating Chat Noir?â
Alya tapped a pen on his cap. âThatâs what Iâm going to find out!â
Nino groaned, knowing Alya sheâd devise some crazy scheme to get Marinette to confess that she was dating Chat Noir.
âAlya, please, donât do anything stupid,â he begged.
âStupid? Who me?â Alya blinked innocently as she walked towards the door. âRelax, Iâve got it all figured out.â
Alya winked at him as she exited the apartment.
Hopefully, Marinette has better luck than me convincing her.
                             XXX
âOn your left!â Adrien shouted as he moved his cat-themed character across the Marshmallow Marsh.
Thanks to Adrien, Nino just narrowly avoided a sugar bomb. Maneuvering around the sticky mess left in its wake, Nino was able to catch up to Adrienâs character as they reached the end of the marsh and the end of the level.
Candy Chompers was one of Adrien and Ninoâs favorite games ever since they discovered it two months ago. They had been enamored by the sugary sweet world and all the characters and adventures that came with it.
It was really a nice change from the games that guys their age played. Less violence and gore. More cute adorable animals wanting to save their world from being overrun by the evil Candy Lord.
As the next level loaded, Nino felt his phone vibrate in his back pocket. He shifted his position on Adrienâs couch so he could reach the phone.
Nino groaned as he read the text from Alya. So Marinette failed at her job yesterday.
Adrien glanced at Nino. âEverything okay?â
âNo.â Nino paused the game, running his hand through his hair. âApparently, Marinette and Chat Noir are dating and it seems Alya is making us go on a double date Saturday.â
âWait, Alya found out Marinette and Chat Noir are dating?â Adrien asked, almost fearful.
âYeah, crazy right?â Nino set his controller on the arm of the couch. âI always thought you two would get together.â
âHeh, yeah, Marinette and I. Definitely wonât happen now. Cause sheâs with Chat. Hehe.â
Nino raised his eyebrows. Adrien was acting weirder than usual. And that was saying a lot, considering he always had the lamest excuses when akumas happened. Nino never really questioned the excuses though. Whatever he was doing when they occurred was Adrienâs business.
âSo youâre going on a double date with Chat Noir?â
Nino nodded.
âAwesome. Great. Amazing.â
Before Nino could ask about Adrienâs weird response, Adrien unpaused the game, forcing Nino to refocus on the level ahead.
Adrienâs behavior was weird, but maybe he just had more feelings for Marinette than Nino thought. Man, he really shouldnât have mentioned the double date in front of Adrien. Poor dude.

âI still donât see why you had to invite them over for a date,â Nino said, watching Alya pull out her famous chicken casserole from the oven. The smell of the dish alone was enough to get Ninoâs mouth watering.
Placing the hot dish on the stove, Alya turned towards Nino. âI needed to see if this little kitty is good enough for our Mari.â
âAlya. Heâs a superhero. Youâve had interviews with him. How can you say heâs not good enough for Nette?â
There was the sound of voices coming from Alyaâs front door, so Nino moved to go open it. From what he could tell the two people outside of it were arguing.
âFor all we know, Chat Noir could just be keeping up appearances. Knowing the entirety of Paris is watching, he could have just put on this fake personality, and underneath heâs just this ugly troll, trying to hurt our precious Marinette.â
Nino rolled his eyes at his girlfriendâs antics.
âWhy are you dressed like that?â One of the voices in the hallway said. Kind sounded like Marinette if he really focused on the voice.
âI thought that this was appropriate.â Wow, that sounded a lot like Adrien. âEspecially considering they think thatââ
The voices stopped as soon as Nino opened the apartment door.
Huh, so it was Marinetteâs voice he heard, but definitely not Adrienâs.
Marinette and Chat Noir looked like little kids caught with their hands in the cookie jar. Both of them looked extremely stiff as they stood next to each other right outside the apartment door.
âOh, youâre here!â Nino jumped at Alyaâs sudden appearance behind him. âNino, donât make them stay out there all night.â
âYeah, câmon in!â Nino moved aside to let the couple in.
âYou came at a perfect time, I just took out the food. Iâll bring it out in just a second!â Alya said, walking back into the kitchen.
âOkay, Alya. Weâll be at the dining table,â Marinette responded, leading Chat over to the table in the dining room.
Nino wasnât sure if it was just him, but Marinette seemed extremely tense like she was a mouse stuck in a field of mouse traps.
There was an awkward pause at the table once the three sat down. Neither of the couple in front of Nino seemed very eager to strike up a conversation. Probably just nerves.
Considering the circumstances, Nino figured that they never really expected to go on a double date ever, so now being on one was likely very weird.
âUh, so, Chat, what do you like to do for fun?â Nino asked.
âOh, you know. Everyday teenage boy things. Play video games, flex in the mirror, save princesses. Normal everyday activities. Hehe.â
âWhat games do you play?â
âI play a bit of Ultimate Mecha Strike III and CandâOW!â
Nino watched confused as Chat Noir brought his foot up to his face and cradled it. Marinette didnât seem at all concerned by her boyfriendâs antics. Instead, she was glancing back towards the kitchen where Alya was adding some finishing touches on her casserole.
âOh, so you and Marinette mustâve bonded over your love for UMS3. Sheâs like the queen of that game. I still have yet to meet someone who could beat her at it.â
Chat Noir scoffed. âIâve beat Little Miss Constipation Girl here at UMS3 multiple times.â
Of all the names to call Marinette, that had to be the weirdest one ever. He definitely had to ask about that later. As far as he knew , the only people who knew about the constipation incident were him, Alya, the girls, and Adrien. Well Nino only knew because Adrien had told him about his trip to London and Alya filled him in on some minor details after the fact.
Marinette either blushed in embarrassment at the nickname or at the fact that she wasnât an unbeatable mastermind at UMS3. âYou only won both times because you cheated by distracting me!â
âA true champion knows not to get distracted by the tiniest of things.â Chat had a smug smirk on his face as he watched Marinette turn as red as a tomato.
âWhy you mangy little all-â
âDinner is served!â Alya announced, interrupting Marinette.
Whatever the incident was surrounding UMS3, Nino was definitely never going to bring that up again for fear of his life or Chatâs life.
âSo what were you guys talking about?â Alya asked, taking the seat beside Nino.
âNothing much. Wow, babe this looks amazing. Letâs dig in!â Nino exclaimed, quickly grabbing a serving of the casserole.
Chat and Marinette followed suit while Alya gave Nino a look that read, âWhat the heck is going on?â. Instead of answering the exact question she was thinking, Nino turned towards his plate and started filling his mouth with food.
Alya shook her head at his antics, grabbing her own portion.
The next few minutes were spent in a comfortable silence as everyone dug into the food.
Alya really out did herself this time. Maybe Marinette should sneak around with superheroes more often if this is how Alya ends up cooking.
âYouâre a hungry little cat arenât you?â Alya asked, a hint of amusement in her voice.
Looking up, Nino saw Chat with his claw (paw?) on the spoon for the casserole dish.
âSorry, I didnât get to eat a whole lot today and this is really good food, Ms. Ladyblogger.â
Nino, along with Alya and Marinette, looked at Chat concerned. Of all people, Nino wouldâve thought a superhero would eat enough to stay healthy. Superheroes like Chat and Ladybug were always out there running around stopping akumas. Not eating enough food? That was practically a death wish.
âNino, could you go get the leftover coleslaw from our lunch earlier. I think Chat needs it more than Ella and Etta.â
Nino immediately complied, more than eager to help out the poor boy who consistently saved Paris.
âNo, you donât have to!â Chat started shaking his hands, trying to stop Nino.
âDude, we have a model friend who doesnât eat enough as it is and I always make him eat some of my leftovers. As far as I know youâre not a model, but you save Paris like everyday so a healthy diet is a must.â Nino pushed the bowl of coleslaw into Chatâs arms. âHere, take as much as you want.â
âOh, um, thanks. Iâm not really sure what to say.â Chat blushed.
âYou donât say anything. Just eat.â Marinette grabbed the coleslaw from Chatâs hands and filled his plate with a nice serving. Alya did similar and picked up the casserole dish, piling even more food onto his plate.
âOh, okay then.â Chat picked up his fork and stared at his plate now full of food.
âI donât see a lot of eating going on there.â Marinette had her hands on her hips, watching Chat to make sure he would eat. Chat clearly didnât want to test Marinette on the topic of food, so he complied by eating the food in front of him.
âI think I finally get it. Marinette is dating Chat to make sure that he would be eating enough!â Alya shouted after a few minutes watching the two.
âWait what you think Iâm dating Chat!?â âThatâs exactly the reason!â
Marinette and Chat blurted at the same time.
Nino furrowed his eyebrows at Marinetteâs statement. That didnât make a lot of sense considering they were currently on a double date.
âWait, what do you mean you and Chat arenât dating?â Apparently, Alya also picked up on Marinetteâs statement.
âUm, well you see Chat is here, umm, filling in for Adrien because you mentioned how you saw me with my boyfriend and Iâm dating Adrien hehe.â Marinette smiled unconvincingly.
âSo youâre not dating Chat Noir?â
Marinette shook her head. âIâm not...did you think I was?â
âUh, yeah! I saw him sneak into your room one night and you kissed him on the cheek!â
Marinette glanced at Chat. âOh, uh, you saw that? Chat and I just hang out sometimes. Giving each other cheek kisses and all.â
Alya blinked while Nino grinned at the explanation. It was practically the same explanation he had given Alya when this whole thing started.
âOh. Then that means youâre dating Adrien?â
Marinette nodded.
âAnd Chat filled in because Adrien couldnât make it?â
Marinette nodded again.
âUh, I have a question.â Nino felt the entire tableâs eyes on him as he spoke. âWhy did Chat volunteer if you and Adrien were keeping your relationship a secret? Why not just say Adrien couldnât come instead of outing your secret to three people?â
âAdrien and I are bad at keeping secrets?â Marinette said more so as a question.
âClearly.â Alya sighed. Nino could tell she was just as confused as he was.
There was just something about her story that didnât add up. It was really bugging him, but he couldnât place his finger on it.
Unless it wasâŚ
âHey, Nette, did you ever tell Chat about the prescription incident?â
âNo, why?â
That was it. That was what didnât make sense. âWhy did Chat call you âLittle Miss Constipation Girlâ earlier?â
âUhhâŚâ
âThere was another constipation incident!â
Alya gave the pair a look of disbelief. âAs much as I could believe Marinette had some separate constipation incident. I feel like your actions suggest otherwise.â
âI mean itâs not like thereâs anything baâOh my gosh, Chatâs Adrien.â The answer just hit Nino like a bullet train. How could he have been so blind. Adrien was the only dude who even knew about that stupid constipation incident. And then his actions lined up almost perfectly with how Chat acted. Even his reaction at the dinner invite. He was probably completely confused on who he was supposed to show up as.
âHow could I have been so blind!â Alya exclaimed next to him.
âI guess we let the Chat out of the bag, huh?â Chat whispered to Marinette.
