CW: imprisoned, chained, arguing, swearing, worry, past trauma
A/N: I started a new series. Post Magician's Bait, my vision for Records of the Caenum Watchers is an episodic fantasy mystery series featuring Luc Epsilona, Reese Takari, and Damian, crown prince of Caenum on various adventures up and down the River Torrent.
While investigating a series of murders, the Watchers and their charge are kidnapped for reasons unrelated to their case. Or is it?
----------
âThis is all my fault.â
âFor the last time, Luc, you had no way of seeing this coming.â
Luc scoffed, the chains binding him to the wall rattling as he shook his head. âI can trace the exact trail of decisions that led to this point. If just one of them were different, we would not be here.â
âCelestialsâŠâ Damian groaned, âhow many times must I repeat myself before the words get through your skull? You. Didnât. Know. And even if one of those decisions were different, how do you know we wouldnât have ended up here anyway?â
âDonât ask me to see the damned big picture. And donât you dare say that we are supposed to be here.â
âI wasnât going to, but now that you mention itââ
âYour Highness, with all due respect, shut the fuck up.â
Damian narrowed his eyes at the Watcher. They were chained to opposite walls in the same cell underneath who-knows-where by who-knows-what. Luc stared at the cuff on his wrist, as if looking at it would force it to unlock, jaw clenched, hands curled into fists.
No matter how much Luc insisted otherwise, their current predicament was not his fault. If anything, it was Damianâs. He'd been the one to insist on accompanying Luc and Reese out of Caenum to investigate a string of murders. He had wanted to step away from city life for a little while, and being with a Watcher and his apprentice-who-insisted-she-was-not-an-apprentice seemed at the time the safest way to do that.
How could they have known they would get kidnapped barely a week into the journey?
âYouâre worried about Reese, arenât you?â
Luc glanced at the cell door, a thick wood slab full of splinters. âThey didnât put her with us,â he muttered, âWhy didnât they put her with us? Are the cells segregated? Is she with other female prisoners? Do they want her for something specific? Celestials, I donât know what theyâre doing with her.â
âYou think they know about⊠yâknowâŠ.â Damianâs eyes flicked to the cell door, uncertain if anyone was outside listening. If their captors didnât know about Reeseâs heritage, it would be best if they didnât find out.
âIt would explain a lot,â Luc said quietly. He ran a hand through his hair, the chains rattling ominously. âI know some of the people involved were never caught or identified. But as far as I know, weâre nowhere near Zariya. Unless they fled out towards the Torrent when the operation was shut down.â
He hissed through his teeth, eyes on the floor. âI hope they donât. I really hope they donât. She doesnât tell me everything, but from what her father and de Silv saidâŠâ the blood suddenly drained from his face. âOh celesitals⊠de Silvâs going to kill me if he finds out I let this happen.â
âDe Silv?â Damian asked quizzically. The name sounded elven.
âOctavian de Silv. An elf who rescued her five years ago from the people whoâd kidnapped her due toâŠâ Luc gestured vaguely, indicating that he also suspected listeners. âHe and I have a⊠complicated history. He had been missing for over a decade when he showed up at my office in Caenum when Reese and her father moved back there. He explained her situation, and asked me to take care of them as a favor.â
âWhy couldnât he do it?â
âDidnât say. He disappeared shortly after. I havenât seen or heard of him or his partner, a hunter by the name Draven Cozenson, since.â Luc sighed. âI swore that Iâd keep her safe. And I did that by keeping track of her and training her to use that knife of hers. Which led to her following me on investigations, which led to me teaching her forensics due to her asking questions. And now everyone thinks sheâs my apprentice.â
Damian raised an eyebrow. ââThinksâ? So sheâs not actually your apprentice? I thought you two were joking about that.â
âUghâŠâ Luc slumped, five years of exasperation and exhaustion etched across his face. âUnofficially?â
âWhat does your own mentor think?â Damian asked, smirking.
âWhen I figured out what was happening about two years in, I sent him an apology letter for all the stress I put him through. He finds the whole thing hilarious.â
Damian chuckled. âShe can handle herself. Iâm sure sheâs doing just fine. Perhaps she already escaped and is currently looking for us.â
âI wish I could share your optimism.â
âI can be optimistic enough for the both of us.â
Luc exhaled slowly, eyes on the door again. âIf you insist.â

Tw: talk of missing teammate, touch of corrupt agency, power suppressing cuffs, implied lying/manipulation
Pov switch but occurs after this post!
The mood that radiated off the trio as they traveled up the pristine elevator in the hero agency up to Supervisorâs office had easily been grim. Fighter stood silently at the corner of the elevator while Teammate watched Leader nervously. Their usually calm and sweet captain appeared as if they just might explode. They paced back and forth within the elevator like they would punch through the metal doors if it did not travel up the skyscraper any faster to the office.Â
Teammate also saw the evidence of their typical yellow magic sparking and swirling around their fists. They reached forward to gently grab their hand, âYou do not want to-â
Leader instantly ripped their hand away, interrupting them after a deep breath. âDear, you know I appreciate you trying to help, but absolutely do not use your abilities on me right now.â
Teammate nodded numbly, stepping back to lean against the cool steel wall next to Fighter. âThey are inconsolable right now.. best not to test your luck,â Fighter muttered. They had a point, they all were dragged down by emotion. Sadness, anger, and fear for their missing teammate.Â
The elevator finally opened with a ding, which had been to Fighter and Teammateâs relief, Leader was a ticking time bomb in that small space. Though they could not relax for long, they had to chase after them as they sent magical blasts at anyone that blocked the path to the office. Fighter cursed as they ran after Leader, Teammate not too far behind.
âLeader!â Fighter shouted after them. âSlow the hell down! We are all fucking upset, but that will land us in the cells!â
Much of the staff had already cleared out of Leaderâs way, not wanting to be subjected to their magical attacks. With no sign of calming down or considering what their friend said, Fighter groaned and stomped their foot. A small shockwave erupted under their captainâs feet, they tripped and fell with a huff. Unlike Teammate, they were willing to use their powers so they would not end up doing something stupid.
When the two finally caught up, Teammate offered their hand to help them up. Leader sighed and accepted, standing, wiping their pants even if the floor always seemed squeaky clean.Â
âYou have to calm down. You know better than anyone that they will never listen to us if you go in fucking guns blazing,â Fighter whispered harshly to them.Â
Leader took a few deep breaths as they thought about their words. Their walk down to Supervisorâs office slowed and they no longer attacked the staff minding their own business. Though anxiety had been written all over their face. âI couldnât help it, I am worried about them. They were my responsibility to keep safe. Our team sticks together and they lied and-â
Teammate gently rubbed their back. âSave it for our fucking superiors. They are the ones that need to hear this shit,â Fighter muttered.Â
The trio continued to make their way to the office. Leader was about to knock on the oak door when it suddenly opened, causing their eyes to widen in surprise. Instead of Supervisor standing there, it had been an officer carrying three sets of power suppressing cuffs, however a familiar honeyed voice could be heard behind the figure.Â
âI do hope you will not be using your powers here. You three, especially Leader, have caused quite the disruption. No matter your answer or reason, the cuffs are precautionary.âÂ
Hey all! This is a continuation of the OC pirate story Iâll try to think of a name for at some point (ayy thereâs a name now look at that). If you didnât catch the first part, the link to that is on that first paragraph.

He didnât even see the fist fly through the air before it crashed into his jaw, knocking him to the ground as his vision faded to black. The other man may have said something, then, but he could only hear the ringing in his ears before that left him too.
Floyd came to at some point, vision fading in dim patches of light and shape. He was thankful just to be conscious right up until his body left the ground without warning, a sickening sensation rushing through him. It only worsened when he was thrown over a shoulder and he swayed in what must have been Percivalâs hold. Any doubts he had were dismissed when the body he was pressed against rumbled with that same deep, soft voice that sent a shiver of dread down his spine.
âI have what I came for. Wrap it up and get everyone back on board before anyone catches on, or theyâre getting left behind.âÂ
Shouting from someone else followed the command, but it faded into the distance as Percival ran the opposite way, jostling Floyd roughly and making breathing a chore with the bones of his shoulder pressing ever harder into his torso. It was then, in the hands of the enemy, being taken to what he could only assume was a secondary location, the threats from earlier still hanging over his head, that Floyd realized compliance wasnât likely to keep him alive.Â
Fighting against every instinct that told him to just go with it, he pushed weakly against the arms that held his body in place, wriggling in hopes of loosening the grip. But no matter how much he struggled, the arms around him only grew tighter. Like a python weakening its prey. Or a serpent, he thought wryly.
When darkness enveloped him again, it took Floyd a second to realize he hadnât passed out, but instead been taken inside. A maze of dim cabin hallways passed by as he craned his neck for a view of where they were headed, but it was all so strangely unfamiliar. Where were they? Floyd had explored every inch of his own ship. He shouldâve known where they were.
The thought that he might be aboard the Golden Felucca hit him like a slap in the face. It didnât make sense, but if Percival wasnât going to kill him after all... Floyd sobbed aloud at the memory of his mindless begging, the offering of himself in exchange for his life. He hadnât expected it to work. He hadnât thought any further ahead than that isolated moment of desperation and he felt a dizzying, fearful regret bubble up to his head.
There was no more time to dwell on it before Percival strode into a room and Floydâs body hit the ground, rolling a few feet with the momentum. There was no struggle left in him, even as he opened his eyes to the horrific sight of a small room outfitted with chains, metal loops, and more he didnât even care to identify in his exhausted state. Adrenaline nagged him, pulled him on to his side, but the full force of his exhaustion, hunger, thirst, and fright hit all at once.
Percival gathered Floydâs wrists above his head in a firm grip, dragging him backward, sitting him up against a wall, and locking him there with heavy metal shackles. Floyd couldnât breathe steadily enough to speak, raising his tearful eyes instead in a last ditch effort to plead with his captor.Â
This couldnât be happening. There was no way Percival had run away with him unseen. In a few seconds, his crew would burst through the door to save him. They had to.
Tall legs bent before him and a lopsided smile spread over Percivalâs face. He reached a hand up to stroke Floydâs hair, which he shied away from with a shudder.
âOh, donât be like that,â Percival chided, running fingers through short waves even as his captive pressed the side of his face to the wall, refusing to look back at him. âThis setup is only temporary, alright? Iâll make sure youâre much less comfortable tomorrow.â
With a final ruffle of Floydâs hair that pulled his head back and knocked it off the wall, as well as a flourish of his own long coat, Percival stood up and strolled back to the door.
Ray thrust his sword fiercely at the opposing pirate, driving them toward the edge of the ship. They parried his strikes well but backed up too far, leaving them vulnerable against the railing. Ray was prepared to force them into submission, perhaps threaten to push them over into the churning waters, when a shrill voice cut through the action, calling all of the opposing pirates to retreat.Â
It caught him off guard and Ray hesitated just long enough for his foe to use their position on the rail to deliver a high kick across his face before scrambling to their feet and jumping the gap between ships.Â
Ray cried out at the nasty hit, cradling his cheek, and by the time he looked back the person had scaled a rope ladder and disappeared. All around him, people were retreating and doing the same, leaving the crew of The Thiefâs Halyard alone and dazed.Â
A quick glance around found nearly everyone standing up at the very least, traces of blood at a surprising minimum. His eye was quickly drawn to Mabel, running over to him with her hands pressed over a deep red stain on her side.
âMabel! Mae, hey, are you alright, is it bad?â Ray tried to pry her hands away and see the wound, but she wouldnât let him. She only pressed harder, breathing heavily through clenched teeth, only causing more pain in an attempt to stanch the bleeding.Â
âItâs fine, âm fine. Just a stab, may-hhh-! Maybe a few centimeters, but thatâs not, âs not important-â
âYes it is!â Ray butted in, placing a careful hand on her shoulder, âHere, hold on, let me get a look at that and we can get it stitched up and taken care of.â
âNo, no! Floyd, itâs Floyd.â Ray froze, eyes suddenly wide, darting around the ship. Heâd seen Floyd just a few minutes ago, hadnât he? âHhhh-heâs, gone, I dunno⊠Thought I saw Percival for a second and he was gone then Floyd was goneâŠâ Mabel stumbled on unsteady feet, and Ray caught her before she could fall to the ground, eyes wild.Â
âGone? What do you mean? Where? People donât just disappear, Mae.âÂ
âJust, over there, look!â She pointed to a wall away from the main battle congregation and the traces of blood around it.Â
âI... Where is he now? Whereâd he go?â
âI didnâ see... it leads off the side, though, and- Gods, Ray, if he- hhheâŠâ she trailed off, the words catching in the back of her throat, her breath hitching. Her eyes were glazed over with tears and pain, but Rayâs were dark, focused, and intense.Â
âIt was him? Youâre sure it was him?â He shook her a little as he asked. Mabel swayed listlessly to the side and nodded. âLook at you, you can hardly even stand. You mightâve just seen it wrong. Canât trust your body, canât trust your mind, right?â She squinted and shook her head as if to clear it but he kept going. âWeâre going to organize this ship and weâre going to find him, and Iâll only relent when we do.â
Mabel looked up, trying to put her thoughts into words, but her head spun and she couldnât think before Ray helped her sit on the ground, made sure she was still putting pressure on the wound, and called everyone else over to him. Beside them, the Golden Felucca was pulling away, no worse for wear but no richer, either. It was strange, to say the least.
When people circled around, Ray did a quick headcount and frowned.
âWeâre missing Charlie and Floyd. Has anyone seen either of them?â
âCharlie just went in, said he couldnât take the heat and needed to lay down before he passed out entirely,â one woman explained.
âOkay, thank you Edith. And Floyd?â Ray was clearly desperate as he looked over everyone, each slight shake of the head and avoidance of eye contact sending a shiver down his spine. âOkay... okay.â He wiped his eyes and swallowed the emotions that wanted to bubble up. It wasnât too late. Surely it wasnât too late.Â
âListen up, then,â he said, voice harsh, âI need one person who can handle a needle and thread... Clara, yes, youâll do. Take Mabel with you, fix her up, and get back to me when youâre done. The rest of you are going to scour every single place on this ship to find Floyd.âÂ
Clara hurried to Mabelâs side as Ray launched into more specific directions, offering two hands to pull her to her feet. She nearly collapsed the moment she stood but Clara caught her around the waist and guided both of them toward the cabin door. Mabel was so dizzy and distracted by the unusually harsh, commanding tone of Rayâs voice that she didnât even hear Clara for a few seconds.
âMabel!â A shout finally brought her back. âThe stairs. Can you make it down or should I try lifting you?â
They were inside. She hadnât even noticed theyâd walked so far, but considering how Clara was already shaking with the effort of holding her upright, Mabel couldnât imagine asking to be carried. She shook her head loosely, stumbling forward and shakily making her way down. Even here, she could still hear Ray in the distance.
âI will not give up on finding him until I exhaust each and every method at my disposal,â he shouted, âand I will not be hearing a single complaint from the lot of you that entire time. I do not care how parched your throat is or how tired your legs are. Do whatever you need to survive, and get the fuck to work.â
Mabel felt faint. She wanted so badly to get back out there and redirect the situation, but she couldnât think straight as she was. She could only hope and pray despite herself that Floyd was still aboard, that what sheâd seen really had been wrong, but she knew that was just too good to be true.
