the fact that they didnt decide to go the route of 'irminsul burns and everyone remembers wanderer as scaramouche' is sooo fascinating to me because imo, it only makes dottore more correct when he rubs it in that wanderer 'can never make up for his past mistakes.' he already couldn't - what's done is done and no amount of punishment or payment in the present can bring anyone back to life (see: deletion attempt) - but with no one remembering who he was, it's true doubly so. he can't even apologize. we do see him giving blueprints back to inazuma but realistically, there isn't much else he can do. he cannot make amends with the people he harmed in any way shape or form. he cannot, as he once stated he was looking forward to, accept whatever consequences they deem fit for him - because they don't even know he's to blame. there is no external burden or punishment coming for him. he just has to live with what is and accept that the only thing there is now is what's in front of him.
and I really don't see this type of situation handled like it is here very frequently. he has a redemption arc of becoming a better person, but doing anything to 'balance the ledger' and 'make up for it' in the more traditional sense of how redemption arcs are often portrayed is mostly impossible. because the ledger is irrelevant. the idea of even being able to 'balance' it somehow is nonsensical. it doesn't matter. there is only the here and now and who you will choose to be within it. that's what matters. and this whole thing is reinforced even further by how soundly the narrative rejects wanderer's logic that the only proper (read: just) end for him now after what he's done is to give his own life. something something the wages of sin are fucking stupid. idk i think it's really neat
