Am I a Rocky Horror Virgin?
Yes, probably, if you have to ask.
Sorry, thems the rules, champ.
But, just so we’re all cleared up, there are a few ways to define a “virgin” in terms of Rocky Horror. Depending on who you ask a virgin may refer to someone who:
Has never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show in any form.
Has never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show and/or The Rocky Horror Show in a theatre setting.
Has never seen The Rocky Horror Picture Show in a theatre setting with audience participation and a live shadowcast.
Generally speaking, casts tend to go with definition #3 while selecting virgins for preshow games and shenanigans, while a casual fan may lean toward definition #1. All that really matters, I suppose, when you get down to it, is that a virgin realizes that they don’t quite know what they’ve gotten themselves into when they walk into the theatre.
Cast and audience alike tend to make virgins the butt-of-the-joke as a way of initiation, in addition to a(n often improvised) Pledge and sometimes a group song. Some are embarrassed, some are brought to life in the spot light, and some refuse to drop their guard for a second, and some never go back to a pre-Rocky Horror life--but it’s all in fun; there is no requirement to participate if you truly don’t want to, but most people just can’t help sating their curiosity.
