hyewon was absolutely exhausted after teaching. she had been nervous about returning to work as a kindergarten teacher, especially with her own little baby at home, but she couldn’t live off of her parents’ money forever. she had spent the majority of her pregnancy away from the city that she called home in an effort to start fresh. after the devastating split with avery after he told her he just wasn’t ready for a child, she just had a constant fear of running into him on the streets and thus disappeared, making it impossible for them to run into one another. but the healthy baby girl was born and now at six months old, hyewon knew that she had to resume her life to properly care for her daughter. she had just picked up byul from her parents’ place, the baby happily giggling in her stroller as hyewon walked back home with her. a yawn escaped her lips as she waited at the light, turning her head to find herself face to face with the man who she hadn’t seen in a whole year. “a-a-avery,” she barely mustered the strength to say his name. the light giggles still came from the stroller as hyewon looked down, her daughter a spitting image of his father. did he even hear her? or register what was happening? the light had changed, but her feet took her nowhere..

                                      she     wrapped     both     hands     around     the     coffee     cup     ,     cradling     it     ,     allowing     the     heat     seep     into     her     palms     even     for     just     a     moment     .     she     stood     in     front     of     her     desk     rather     than     behind     it     ,     like     sitting     down     might     mean     committing     to     this     moment     longer     than     she     could     afford     .     there     had     already     been     small     talk     ,     enough     to     make     this     feel     dangerously     close     to     normal     ,     and     she     realized     she     was     getting     too     comfortable     .     her     gaze     flicked     up     at     him     ,     soft     for     a     fraction     of     a     second     ,     before     something     in     her     expression     tightened     ,     responsibility     shifting     back     into     its     usual     place     .     “     this     a     nice     gesture     ,     ”     she     admitted     ,     like     she     owed     him     that     much     ,     but     her     office     loomed     around     them     ⎯⎯⎯     screens     lit     ,     papers     spread     on     top     of     mahogany     surface     ,     her     phone     buzzing     somewhere     out     of     reach     .     everything     waiting     .     all     of     it     her     responsibility     to     fix     in     the     usual     absence     of     her     brother     .                                            she     exhaled     with     a     sigh     ,     glancing     past     him     and     toward     the     door     ,     as     if     already     calculating     how     to     end     this     without     making     it     feel     like     that     ;     an     ending     .     “     —     today's     just     not     a     great     day     ,     that's     all     .     ”     could     she     even     remember     the     last     day     she'd     welcomed     a     distraction     ?     a     single     moment     where     even     the     slightest     detour     from     her     schedule     had     caused     anything     but     heightened     anxiety     ?     her     fingers     tightened     slightly     around     the     cup     .     she     didn't     drink     it     .     didn't     let     herself     enjoy     it     .     knowing     what     she     was     about     to     do     ,     it     didn't     feel     like     she     deserved     to     .     “     i     don't     really     have     time     to     do     ..     this     ,     right     now     .     ”     she     freed     one     hand     to     make     a     small     ,     vague     gesture     between     them     ,     like     she     didn't     dare     to     define     what     this     was     ,     though     what     she     was     referring     to     was     clearly     more     than     just     the     cup     of     coffee     resting     between     her     hands     .

                                      the     door     barely     clicked     shut     behind     them     before     she'd     turned     ,     realizing     just     then     how     close     they     were     ,     shoulders     bumping     into     the     door     as     she     instinctively     took     a     step     back     .     she     could     feel     the     heat     coming     off     him     ,     the     dizzying     smell     of     cologne     ;     it     hit     her     all     at     once     ⎯⎯⎯     annoyingly     familiar     ,     equally    distracting     .     for     a     split     second     she     just     stared     at     him     ,     like     if     she     let     his     own     words     fill     the     silence     he'd     properly     hear     himself     .     “     oh     my     god     ,     ”     she     breathed     ,     the     words     leaving     her     in     a     burst     of     disbelief     ,     “     you're     just     unbelievable     ,     aren't     you     ?     ”     she     let     out     a     humorless     chuckle     .     “     you're     really     gonna     drag     me     in     here     —     ,     ”     she     gestured     vaguely     toward     the     door     behind     her     ,     toward     the     party     and     everyone     attending     ,     including     her     ,     “     —     and     demand     to     know     if     i'm     dating     him     ?     ”     her     arms     crossed     defiantly     ,     nails     pressing     into     her     sleeves     ,     hard     ,     as     she     studied     his     features     for     ,     what     ,     jealousy     ?     nerve     ?     audacity     ?     “     do     i     need     to     remind     you     that     your     wife     is     right     on     the     other     side     of     that     wall     ?     ”

frame  arches  low  and  palms  momentarily  cement  on  display  window  of  first  tattoo  parlour  he  stumbles  upon  ,  inching  almost  close  enough  to  huff  into  glass  surface  .  narrowed  optics  scour  establishment  for  any  sign  of  life  and  soon  widen  once  they  catch  glimpse  of  figure  that  seems  familiar  with  the  premises  ,  jump  starting  fast  paced  footing  toward  entrance  .  ‘  are  you  by  any  chance  open  and  also  available  for  a  moderately  large  design  at  this  moment  ?  ’  slur  filled  speech  spills  past  dry  petals  before  he  stops  to  consider  life  altering  consequences  ,  liquor  poisoning  mind  to  the  point  of  dulling  own  ruminating  nature  .  ‘  i'm  not  familiar  with  the  process  ,  but  i  assume  those  take  quite  a  bit  of  time  and  i'm  a  busy  man  ,  so  right  now  would  be  best  .  ’  finds  it  hard  to  drop  professionalism  even  under  the  influence  ,  system  already  running  on  autopilot  as  he  awaits  what  is  considered  a  death  sentence  in  his  line  of  work  to  be  carried  out  by  artist  stood  before  him  .  /  @mintings

                                      there     was     a     steady     beep     ..     beep     ..     beep     somewhere     to     his     right     ,     his     head     throbbing     in     time     with     it     .     he     tried     to     piece     his     last     seconds     of     consciousness     together     ⎯⎯⎯     a     curb     ,     maybe     ?     a     rock     ?     the     only     thing     that     remained     was     the     vague     memory     of     the     pavement     rushing     up     way     too     fast     ,     his     board     disappearing     under     him     and     then     ..     nothing     .     it     was     like     trying     to     grasp     onto     a     dream     already     slipping     through     your     fingers     like     sand     .     amid     the     haze     he     registered     approaching     voices     and     rapid     footsteps     down     the     hall     ,     followed     by     curtains     rustling     which     forced     his     head     up     ,     and     he     blinked     once     ,     then     twice     ,     trying     to     make     the     image     in     front     of     him     make     any     more     sense     .     “     alright     ,     ”     he     faintly     nodded     to     himself     ,     voice     hoarse     ,     “     so     either     i     hit     my     head     way     harder     than     they     said     —     ,     ”     he     gestured     vaguely     toward     them     ,     “     —     or     the     drugs     here     are     fantastic     .     ”

                                      “     come     on     ..     how     is     this     not     just     one     of     my     many     brilliant     ideas     ?     think     about     it     —     no     strings     ,     no     commitment     ,     no     worrying     about     meeting     parents     or     remembering     anniversaries     ..     not     to     mention     all     the     drama     that     usually     comes     with     relationships     .     ”     her     shoulders     lifted     in     a     casual     shrug     ,     as     if     the     proposal     was     just     as     innocent     as     described     .     “     and     ,     the     best     part     —     you'll     have     the     privilege     of     sleeping     with     me     .     ”
