Alabama-Clemson becomes college football's best new rivalry
NEW ORLEANS/December 31, 2017Ā Ā (AP)(STL.News)Ā ā The three-peat will be complete.
Then again, there might be a few more chapters in college footballās most intriguing new rivalry.
For the third year in a row , Clemson will meet Alabama in the College Football Playoff, only this time it will be in the Sugar Bowl semifinal rather than the national championship game.
Theyāll be hard-pressed to match the drama and excitement of the last two meetings: Alabamaās 45-40 victory that featured 40 points in the final 10 1-2 minutes , followed by Clemsonās 35-31 triumph on a touchdown pass with one second remaining .
āWe havenāt competed against each other a lot,ā Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said Sunday on the eve of the New Yearās night game. āBut all of a sudden youāve got this three-game series that has just happened at the highest level. And this is kind of a rubber match. But, to be honest with you, this is probably not going to be the last one. There will probably be more of these down the road.ā
Atlantic Coast Conference champion Clemson (12-1) is the top seed in the playoff, bouncing back from a shocking 27-24 loss to Syracuse in mid-October . Alabama (11-1) didnāt even get a chance to play for the Southeastern Conference title, losing to Auburn in the regular-season finale after being ranked No. 1 all season by The Associated Press.
Despite the setback, the selection committee went with the Tide as the No. 4 seed over Big Ten champ Ohio State.
That set up Clemson-Alabama, Part III.
āThis is kind of like a rivalry now,ā Tide linebacker Rashaan Evans said. āThis is something I will definitely remember for the rest of my life, just to be able to be a part of this whole big thing. Iāll have faced these guys three times, watched so much film of us winning and losing. Now we have another chance.ā ____
Some things to watch for when Clemson takes on Alabama in the Sugar Bowl:
RENFROW VS. FITZPATRICK
Clemson receiver Hunter Renfrow has been a real thorn in Alabamaās side. The former walk-on caught four touchdown passes in the two previous meetings, including last seasonās 2-yard game winner.
The burden of shutting down Renfrow could fall largely on Alabamaās star defensive back, Minkah Fitzpatrick.
āI think thatās going to be the key matchup in the game,ā Clemson co-offensive coordinator Tony Elliott said. āObviously, Hunterās had some really, really good games against these guys, so theyāre going to be gunning to make sure they take him away and force other guys to make plays.ā
Fitzpatrick is looking forward to the challenge.
āHeās not going to out-physical you or outrun you,ā the Alabama player said. āHe gets the ball out in space, makes people miss, and heās a real shifty guy, smaller guy, so itās hard to tackle him in space.ā
BANGED-UP LINEBACKERS
Alabama has endured a rash of injuries at the linebacker position , which really seemed to affect the Tideās stellar defense late in the season.
With more than a month off since the loss to Auburn, the situation looks a little better but remains a point of concern for coach Nick Saban.
Most notably, Dylan Moses and Shaun Dion Hamilton wonāt be able to go against Clemson, dealing a blow to the Tideās signal-calling inside linebacker position. That puts a big burden on Mack Wilson, who returned from a foot injury to play in the Auburn game but wasnāt all that effective.
āItās very important to get the signal, get it communicated, and get the defense lined up,ā Saban said.
āMack is very capable. He doesnāt have a lot of experience doing it, but Iām sure he will do a good job in the game.ā
QUARTERBACK DUEL
Clemsonās Kelly Bryant had some huge shoes to fill stepping in for Deshaun Watson, but the junior signal-caller made it a relatively seamless transition.
Bryant provides the same sort of dual threat as Watson, capable of beating teams with his arm or his legs, but itās hard to envision him putting up the same sort of numbers on the big stage.
Watson passed for more than 400 yards in each of his games against the Crimson Tide and accounted for a total of eight touchdowns.
Meanwhile, Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled with his consistency down the stretch, which might be a product of working with his third offensive coordinator (Brian Daboll) in two seasons.
Over his last three SEC games, the sophomore completed barely 50 percent of his throws (33 of 65) for 637 yards and three touchdowns. The passing game has been downright one-dimensional; Calvin Ridley leads with 50 receptions, while no one else has more than 14.
GETTING THEIR KICKS
Considering how close the last two games were, this one could come down to a kick.
Alabama would seem to have an edge with Andy Pappanastos, who converted 15 of 19 field goals and didnāt miss from inside 40 yards.
Clemson had to switch kickers during the season after Greg Huegel went down with an injury . Alex Spence missed four of his first six attempts but he knocked through five of his last six, including a career-best 46-yarder in the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game.
DRIVE FOR FIVE
Alabama needs a win to stay on course for Sabanās record-tying sixth national title.
Saban came up just short a year ago, leaving him one behind Bear Bryant.
Alabama has won four championships in the last eight seasons under Saban, who also claimed a BCS title at LSU during the 2003 season.

"Looks like Anouke is getting friendly with your cousin." Minkah noted with a sly look in their eyes. "Why, Anouke even let him into their private gold stash... And gave him that pretty gold crown!" They held a hand to their cheek, gasping as if they just couldn't believe what had occurred. "It's so unusual for Anouke to do that. They never let anyone near their things, much less give them away~"
If Gamal could look any more bitter, it would be extremely difficult for him to do so. He had the angriest look on his face, his cheeks dark and his mouth puckered in the pissiest little scowl. He felt betrayed, abandoned, and so, so very jealous. Goddamnit, Anouke was his friend! He was trying to be good and honest with them, giving them all of the support and love he had stored in his rotten demon body, and for what?! For them to get all comfy with his stupid, fancy-pants cousin?!
āIām gonna kill him.ā he sneered, clenching his fists so hard his nails were almost drawing blood from his palms. āHe comes in here, gets in my territory, steals my friend! I wonāt stand for it. I wonāt! And you!ā he pointed a finger at Minkah, letting out a heavy huffing breath. āYouāre not helping!ā He gave them an angry glare for the longest time, but then, something unfortunate happened. A sadness fell over his face and he glanced down at the sand below him, hands dropping to his sides, falling out of clenched fists. He should have known better than to think anyone would care about him truly, deeply, as much as he always wished for. āMaybe I should justā¦go back to sleep.ā
āI donāt know whether I want to do this. I donāt know whether I CAN do this.ā Minkah explained with a hand to their head, pressed to their temple as they tried their best to fight off a headache. "Look, Gamal. I know you think Anouke is some fun shiny toy to play with, but I really must ask you to reconsider staying here. I don't want to force you out, though I will if it comes down to it. Anouke was finally healing after what happened, and you showing up just threw all of that out the window."
Though Gamal was used to using people and treating them like toys, for once in his long, long life, he didnāt have those intention with Anouke. Sure, at first he did, but not now. Not after they had spent so much time together. āI know you donāt trust me. I get it.ā He huffed, claws gripping into large fists at his side. āBut canāt you just believe me for once? I actually CARE about Anouke, despite what you might think. Yeah, at first, I was a piece of shit and I was just playing around, but it changed once I got to know them. Shit, I appreciate both of you, even if you act like Iām the definition of horrible. And maybe I am. But Anouke is my friend and I want to make it up to them, and you trying to convince me to up and leave isnāt helping at all.ā
"Youāre up to no good! And thereās no good in your future!" Minkah snapped at both Gamal and Lothaire. As gentlemanly as Lothaire might've been, Minka didn't trust either of their asses. "Just leave and stop poisoning our oasis with your negativity. This darkness that you both exude is dangerous not only for the world, but for us too! And you, Gamal, should know better! You know what kind of influence you have on Anouke, so kindly pack your sh-- stuff, and beat it!" They demanded angrily.
While Lothaire was prepared to accept that he was not welcomed, as much as it pained him to admit it, Gamal didnāt agree with that idea in the least. Goddamnit, he had a friend here and he was going to stick around no matter if Minkah liked it or not. Lothaire simply shrugged his shoulders. āI understand.ā he said with a deep sigh. āI will leave. Farewell, Iāll not be botheriāā
āBullshit.ā Galam interrupted. He didnāt even bother to watch his language, regardless of whose company he was keeping. āYou canāt boss us around. And you canāt judge my cousin without even knowing him. Anouke and I are friends, and if I want to come see them, I will come see them. Iāll leave for now if itāll make you happy, but Iāll be back soon, and you better have a smile on your face when you greet me. Understand?ā
