You’re welcome! Still, keep in mind, I haven’t seen the full game in English. My only full playthrough so far was in Japanese. So there’s probably other bilingual people who have even more, detailed things to say on the topic than me.

Nezumi couldn’t care less about the holidays. The processed, fake cheer regurgitated by the masses in a world slowly falling to pieces was about the last thing he wanted to deal with on a muggy, winter evening. Yet there he was, letting Shion do whatever with his hair, listening to the commercialized drivel sound genuine in the off-key humming behind him.

Nezumi was being dragged to some holiday market Shion had set up in the slums. He had insisted that a community event like that would bring hope back to the people. The idiot didn’t realize that the people who arrived there left all optimism at the entrance. Or, he did, but was too stubborn to let that stop him. Remembering Shion’s affronted look when he told him so made a snort escape him without warning.

“Nezumi?” Shion questioned, momentarily pausing his ribbon-weaving. Nezumi felt a strand of hair brush his face, and he tilted his head to see curious eyes centimeters from his. Shion blinked, studying him. His wine-red eyes glimmered in the soft glow of the lantern. He prompted, “Is something funny?”

“The existence of a holiday catering to pompous, rich folk, but what’s new,” Nezumi drawled, eyebrow raised.

A pout crossed Shion’s face, and he straightened up. From above Nezumi, Shion said, “It’s not that bad, you know. The holidays are about appreciating others, being together with family.”

“I don’t have a family." Nezumi regretted it the second it came out of his mouth. He hated making Shion sad - picturing the concerned furrow of his eyebrows, the downward twist of his mouth, was certain to make Nezumi feel like carving out his own heart. 

An intake of breath. When Shion spoke, it was quiet, but sure. "You have me.” Shion was always doing this, spouting off serious, important lines so flippantly. It knocked the air out of him every time.The sky was blue, Nezumi had Shion.

He flinched, chagrined. “I- you. You’re too emotional, idiot." 

"Only for you,” Shion replied, smile evident in his voice.

Nezumi let his mumbled ‘you too’ fade into silence, and gradually Shion went back to messing with his hair. He had refused any silly sweaters and the like, yet somehow found himself indulging Shion in this manner instead.

A wash of affection came over him at the gentle tugging of his locks, the stray hand that would stop braiding to run fingers through them absentmindedly, the warmth of a body pressed close to his. It was peaceful. His lips curled into a small smile, and he let the repetitive motions lull him into a light slumber.
