Stranger & Patsy “Yeah Yeah Baby” (1964)
Millicent Todd aka Patsy
Forty-nine years ago, one of the musical voices that evoked a dancing mood as Jamaicans partied in celebration of the country's newly established self-governing status, was that of Millicent Todd.
Not only was it the birth of the nation, but the formative years of the sound that in time would become the leading brand by which Independent Jamaica would be known.
Yet this pioneer entertainer better known as Patsy is almost lost. Her name is seldom mentioned in the books written about Jamaica's popular music and when it does it is mentioned in passing as a half of a duet with Derrick Morgan (as Derrick and Patsy), or with Strangejah Cole as Strangejah and Patsy.
Not only is Patsy not given her props as an important contributor to the development of Jamaican music, but typical of so many of reggae's pioneers, she has been deprived of her dues as it relates to remuneration from her creative endeavours.
