“Never feel self-pity, the most destructive emotion there is. How awful to be caught up in the terrible squirrel cage of self.” —Millicent Fenwick (politician, USA, 20th cent.)
Self-pity is not only one of the most destructive emotions, but it is, in my opinion, the most annoying. For someone to sit around, complaining about how bad their situation is without taking any initiative whatsoever to try and change it themselves, I find it hard to feel any sort of sympathy for them. I admit, I have found myself doing that in more than one situation in the past, but every time I realize what I am doing I make sure to stop myself immediately, and see if there is any way I can better my situation. It can be hard to get out of the spiral of self-pitiness. As Fenwick says, it’s a terrible squirrel cage of self, where even just a little bit of self-pity can make you feel sorry for yourself even the more, until you are so wrapped up you might have forgotten totally what it was you were sorry about in the first place.
