Green Ribbon

Miles had gone out riding, since the house had been feeling far too stuffy for his liking. He rode around the estate without much purpose for a while, but as a storm began to roll in, he headed back for the house. Only to spot the front gates being closed behind a familiar car. He took the time to stop, just out of sight, watching as Kateโs car headed down the track.
He quickly returned his horse to the stables and stomped into the house in his riding boots. Heading around the longer way so he could appear at the top of the stairwell, to look down on Kate and her young guest.
It was a girl, she seemed Milesโ age, she wore ankle-high brown leather boots laced up tightly, the hint of flesh-toned tights just above them, she wore a knee-length green skirt with stiff pleats hanging down from her waist, she had a cream button-down blouse with wrist-length sleeves, with a silver locket hanging down from the collar. She had freckles across her skin, long bouncy ringlets of hair, half of which was pushed up with a green ribbon bow that perfectly matched her skirt. And finally, she wore a large square pair of faux tortoise shell glasses, freckled and speckled with cream and brown. She slipped off her large brown raincoat, hanging it over her forearm as she looked around the houseโs entry hall.
She met eyes with Miles and didnโt for a moment have a flicker of fear or anxiety; she simply smiled and carried on listening to Kate.
He kept quiet and sheltered by the shadows as she climbed the stairs at Kateโs side, watching her almost move in slow motion. He inhaled deeply, savouring her oak wood scent, and he watched as her hair bounced with each step up the stairwell. He noticed her ribbon slipping through her hair with each bounce, before tumbling to the stone floor silently and unnoticed by either her or Kate.
As he watched the two disappear up the stairs, Miles grabbed the green ribbon and shoved it into his pocket, hurrying away to his room before sheโd notice what heโd stolen.
Miles stood silently, watching from the darkness of the hallway. It was late, and no moon, so the house was dark and quiet, with most everyone in bed. He watched as Y/n moved quietly around the kitchen, his hand in his pocket, his fingers rubbing the soft green ribbon between his fingers with a dark, smug smile across his lips. He knew she was looking for the ribbon; she had been for days now, but he kept his lips sealed.
โOh! Hello Miles.โ She gasped as she caught his eye,
โHello, Y/n,โ he growled softly,
โDid you want something?โ
โNo, just canโt sleep.โ
โOh, Iโm sorry to hear that. Perhaps some water might clear both our minds.โ
โI wonโt say no,โ He nodded, โWhat is bothering you, Y/n?โ
โNothing worth bothering you with,โ She smiled as she made with both cool glasses of water,
โBut indulge me nonetheless.โ
โI canโt seem to find my favourite bow, my little green ribbon bow. Itโs baffling, I know I had it the day I arrived.โ
โThat is strange, but this is a big house. Iโm sure itโll turn up soon, Darling.โ
โThank you, Miles.โ
โGoodnight, Y/n,โ He nodded, taking his glass, allowing his callus hands to brush her own soft ones before heading out of the kitchen, back to his bedroom, keeping the ribbon tight between his fingers.
Miles sat on his bed inside his room, strumming mindlessly on his blue guitar. All while keeping Y/nโs green ribbon between his teeth, so little of her scent still existed on it, but he so desperately wanted to savour every single drop that still remained. He hummed softly in pleasure at the softness against his lips. But as he heard the door open and the trade mark patter of Y/nโs boots, he pulled the ribbon from his lips and shoved it into his lap.
โMiles?โ Y/n called,
โYes, Y/n?โ
โKate is taking Flora for another crack at clearing out the greenhouse. Would you like to come along?โ
โNo, thank you, I have more than enough to be getting in with, without aged Ivy and rotten roses.โ
โFair enough, good day.โ She nodded as she turned on her heel and went to leave,
โBut-โ
โYes, Miles?โ
โBut do you have a great desire for gardening?โ
โโฆ not particularly, admittedly.โ
โWhy donโt you just stay here with me?โ
โYou wouldnโt mind?โ
โI never mind your company, Darling.โ he smugly smiled, โCome on, sit. We can play a song together.โ
โIโm afraid I lack your skills in such things; I couldnโt even master the recorder.โ She said as she sat down in the chair beside his bed,
โI am sure your voice will be heavenly enough,โ
โSo long as you promise not to be angry when I crack your windows,โ she giggled, pushing her hair from her eyes.
โMaybe this will help you feel better.โ He smiled, finally offering her back the green ribbon bow,
โHuu!โ She gasped, โWhere did you find it?!โ
โI have my ways,โ he cooed, โHere, let me do it.โ he smiled as he ran his hands over the ribbon, pulling back her hair and putting it up in a ponytail with the green ribbon in a perfect bow, โThereโฆ beautiful darling.โ
โThank you, Miles.โ
โYouโre very welcome, Y/n.โ
