_________________________________
You play games.
You push the limits; breaking rules, lying, cheating, a “No” from Stephanie simply means you have to try yet another tactic to win her affection.Â
You know how to wait, even if you are by nature impatient. You take your job at Mighty Med as seriously as you need to to keep from being cubed, and Horace’s standards aren’t high. The end goal isn’t to keep saving superheroes, it is to become one.Â
It’s what you are destined for.
Skylar disagrees, voicing your lack of integrity, compassion, humility, but she barely has one of those qualities; most of the heroes have none. You are well overqualified.
That day you hold the Key of Steel in your hands only confirms what you’ve known all along. You have what it takes. Clever, bold, arrogant. This is where you belong.
Of course losing the key is a setback, but only temporary. You know sooner or later one of your schemes will work out. Eventually you will become the legend others idolize.
When it does happen, that moment when your feet are rising from the floor and you realize just what happened, just what you’ve become, you drown in your elation. In your glory.
You become the catalyst the brings Mr. Terror to her knees. Your name headlines the newest issue in the superhero saga. You are invincible.
It’s not enough.
You return as a hero, but there is no one to welcome you. Mighty Med lays in ruins, and the part of you that began to see that place as home starts to burn.Â
You turn to Donald Davenport for help. As far as you’re concerned, he owes you for saving his son’s life, and he’s not reluctant to pay his debt.Â
It doesn’t take long to get back on your feet. All of this comes so naturally to you, unlike Oliver, and the bionic heroes aren’t so bad to work with. In fact, messing with them has become one of your new favorite hobbies. Especially Bree.
She stays on your mind, and you don’t think it would be too much of a stretch for her to say yes to a date or two, as long as you stepped your game a level up from dumpster diving dinners.Â
The day you casually walk downstairs, ready with your proposition, you see her and Oliver on the terrace, hands intertwined. She kisses him.
As your gut twists in jealousy, you begin wonder just what else you’ve missed.Â
When Reese reveals herself to be one of the enemy, you don’t accompany Douglas to the hospital. Why should you? The only reason Oliver and Skylar went is to comfort those they’re pining over. This is war, even Chase admitted it. You don’t have time to be sympathetic.Â
You set out to warn the heroes you already knew the locations of, praying Rodissius’ children haven’t gotten to them first.Â
Tecton finds you before you find him, and with your idol is something even greater. A new league, a glimmer of the might of the superhero world before it went into hiding. He makes you an offer.
You take it.
You try and convince Skylar to come with you, but she is reluctanct. She’s loyal to the others. You remind her that so are you; she’s just afraid of offending her boyfriend Chase. Skylar flinches at your tone. You spit out an apology she doesn’t accept.
It’s your last day in the Centium Tower, though you tell no one, when an explosion levels it to the ground. You and Skylar are trapped together under the rubble. It seems like an eternity the way you two argue, but by the end there’s a glimmer of familiarity, like the friendship you used to have before Mighty Med fell.Â
You kiss, and for the first time you’re glad things never worked out with Bree.Â
After the rescue you delay leaving the team for now. You’ve relocated underground, and you take another stolen moment with Skylar, but instead of ending with a smile, she pulls away from you, shaking her head. She can’t do this. You ask why.
Skylar loves him, not you.
In the end it shouldn’t matter because Chase saw exactly what went on and disappeared without another word. Bree screams in your face as if it were your fault that he left the team.Â
By nightfall you’ve left too, finding Tecton like you vowed. Skylar follows, but she won’t speak to you, assuming a composure colder than the years before when she believed humans to be inferior.Â
You don’t care, not anymore. The only worthy pursuit now is the annhilation of the children of Rodissius, and you’ll burn through anyone or anything that stands in your way.
This is no longer a game.Â
