one thing i hate is 'the bad character who never does anything bad' in media. when a character is said to be a bad person in some way, characters treat them as if they are, but they never actually do anything worse than be slightly snarky on screen (screen literally and metaphorically ofc, this isn't just a movie/tv show thing.)
even worse when the character is said to be *actually* bigoted in some manner. if a character is stated to be and treated as a racist, it should come up in the story some time beyond their introduction when they're show to be such (if there's a scene like that at all, sometimes someone else will just go 'that's John Racist. he's racist.' and the MC will believe them.
it shows that they want the 'cool' or 'deep' credit for liking such 'complex' and 'unlikable' characters without *actually* making the character unlikable. they're scared to actually broach the topic. they want everyone to love these bad boys while still being able to say he's complex and morally grey and shit.
the outlast trials are the greatest non-example of shit. leland coyle is a bigoted racist misogynist cop who loves police brutality. and he is that in the game, further than just wearing a cop outfit and saying one-liners about being guilty. he is actually that, in his dialogue and backstory.
say what you will about outlast trials just becoming shocking weird dark shit for it's own sake, trying to top it's last bit of disgust like saw or final destination, but you can't say they don't go all fucking in on it.
