The monastery of St. Benedict, or the "Sacro Speco", is an ancient Benedictine monastery located in the territory of Subiaco, in the province of Rome in Lazio. It's located in the place where Benedict's cave used to be, where he stayed for 3 years to pray. The interior, is a complicated maze of rooms, churches, chapels, sometimes built into the rock. It is covered with precious fresco decorations of various periods, from the early Byzantine works (eighth century) to the precious painting of St. Francis (1223), first faithful depiction ever made of the saint, accomplished three years before his death and many more from XIV and XV century.
