Fields, Michael Rich

A small painting with a big attitude. Much of the time when working on larger paintings, I will have several small canvases off to the side where I can experiment with color combinations and marks. At the time, I was working on a series of much larger works of more intimate moments in the landscape. This painting, Fields, is a more expansive approach to landscape through abstraction.

Cherokee, Michael Rich

I spend a lot of time in Western North Carolina in a place my distant family once called home. The Cherokee tribe was also rooted in this area, a landscape, beautiful, mountainous and dramatic. While the painting was made without preconception, I recognized in the work the Blue Ridge mountains and forests of a place I love so much.

Casting Nets, Michael Rich

Originally begun in 2015 and finally finished in 2017. This painting came about from a conversation - the idea of casting nets, the searching and fishing about in painting as we look for our true subjects. Several times, I thought this work was finished and several times I stepped away from it - only to finally come back to it, sand large areas down and rework the painting until it reached its current state. The sky, weather, the ocean are all there in this work.
