The Impact of Multimedia Teaching Tools
La Mirada-based postsecondary economics instructor Michael Hines has been educating students for nearly two decades. Over that period of time, he has worked for a number of institutions of higher learning including the University of California and California State University. Michael Hines stresses the use of multimedia teaching tools as part of his overarching pedagogical philosophy. The use of various technologies (filmstrips, videos, PowerPoint presentations, etc.) in the classroom is as old as those technologies themselves. On an anecdotal basis, educators at all levels and in all subjects have been praising the effectiveness of multimedia tools for decades. Researchers in the field of education have given a number of underlying reasons for the superior impact of this academic approach, but most of these reasons revolve around the notion that multimedia classroom materials stimulate multiple senses simultaneously to engage student attention on several different levels. Recognizing that different students learn in different ways, diligent educators tend to diversify their outreach methods through whatever means are at their disposal. Several scientific studies, including a peer-reviewed 2016 study at King Saud University, have backed up educator claims of multimedia’s effectiveness. Other studies, however, have complicated the matter. For example, a 2015 study published in the Turkish Online Journal of Educational Technology maintains that, in order to be truly effective, educators must design multimedia materials themselves.
