Steve Martin - Two By Two (I'm Losing You) (1971)
I heard this song while listening to Bob Stanley's wonderful compilation American Baroque (Chamber Pop and Beyond 1967-1971) This is essentially the Left Banke as Steve Martin (no relation) is singing a Michael Brown written and produced song. I posted the equally good b-side Love Songs in the Night years ago.
Fundamentally Flawed: My conversation with one of the most influential anti-trans Christian leaders in the U.S.
Not long ago, I read that the evangelical pastor and author Michael Brown had suffered a very public fall from grace. Allegations of inappropriate sexual behaviour had surfaced from within his own ministry circle, eventually leading to investigations and uncomfortable questions for a man who had spent much of his career presenting himself as a defender of Christian moral clarity.
Reading those reports pulled me back fifteen years, to the summer of 2011, when Brown and I found ourselves engaged in a lengthy and increasingly visible debate on Facebook. At the time, I was a recently transitioned transgender woman still finding my footing in the world. Brown, by contrast, was a well-known evangelical radio host and author whose book A Queer Thing Happened to America warned Christians that LGBTQ equality posed a grave threat to the moral fabric of society.
Same instructions for cop or mugger
Why is that?
chorus) Michael Brown was gunned down In a Missouri town And the grand jury refused to indict. So the people did protest For they could not find justice And they vowed to continue the fight.
(verses) Without a warrant The cop ordered him to stop And cursed him For walking in the street. Although he was unarmed Six shots from the cop's gun Killed the 18-year-old youth Illegally. How can we let these things happen? We've got to stop these things happening. (chorus)
Without any trial The cop sentenced him to die On Canfield Drive In Ferguson. His black hands were in the air But the white cop did not care For he knew he'd get away With murder. How can we let these things happen? We've got to stop these things happening. (chorus)
An act of petty theft Is not punishable by death According to the laws Of the land. Yet for alleged theft of two cigars From the Ferguson Market store The System lets cops Kill a young Black man. How can we let these things happen? We've got to stop these things happening. How can we let these things happen? We've got to stop these things happening.

A public domain protest folk song from 2014 about the killing of Michael Brown, the grand jury's non-indictment and the protests by people in Ferguson, Missouri.
"When we live in time, we spend our days seeking the meaning of life. In contrast, when we are present, we enjoy a life saturated with meaning." - Michael Brown, The Presence Process.
