A group of rough looking boys walked past me today and all I heard of their conversation was βheβs got that anxiety disorder bro so I went with him so heβd be more comfortableβ and it made me realise the world isnβt all that bad
The pet store I worked at had a pen with rabbits near the front door. On every side of the pen were huge signs saying βYou can pet me, but donβt pick me up!β
One day two absolutely huge guys came in and one immediately reaches into the pen to grab a rabbit. Before i could say anything his friend grabbed his arm and asked him βdid you see the sign?β
He said βyeah! it says that you can pick them up but donβt pet them!β
Then he went quiet for a moment and softly said βI didnβt read it right did I?β
And his friend just puts his arm on his shoulder and said βits ok, i know youβve got that thing where words get mixed up. Let just pet these cute lil shitsβ
And I still havenβt gotten over that interaction.
I was walking my dog through Boston bc he likes the likes car rides. Heβs a little thing tbh we call him short and long.
So this huge scary man with a full beard approaches me like βhey can my buddy and I pet your dog? He gets nervous around dogs but yourβs is so small I think itβs a good place to start.β
Ofc I was like βyes heβs very friendly!β So this guy brings his equally big friend over and they sit on the floor while this man looks terrified of my tiny dog so big man number one asks βcan I pick him up?β And i say yes so he picks him up and puts him on man number twoβs lap and man number two is abt to freak out and his friend straight up just goes βhey man, itβs okay just relax Iβd never let anything hurt you. Heβs a good boy.β Iβll never forget it ever bc I know that man looked at me (5'3 , glasses, probably wearing a sweater vest) and my dog (kinda goofy looking little thing) and was like βah yes the two least intimidating living things Iβve seen in Boston all day heβll feel relaxed around themβ and went out of his way to help his friend. It makes me so happy
My husband had this Dungeons and Dragons group ages ago, and one of the guys was TERRIFIED of cats.Β The moment he sees one he freezes up and can barely breathe.Β Said guy is almost seven feet tall and solid wall of muscle.Β Whenever he came over Iβd put the cats in the bedroom and chill out with a book because my cats donβt like being shut away without one of us.Β
One of my cats was pawing at the door and meowing loudly, an indication she REALLY needs to use the litter box.Β I let her out and decide, hey, Iβm hungry, and decide to the kitchen.Β I forgot to shut the bedroom door.Β
Next thing I hear is the group going completely silent.Β My husband very calmly asks me to come over and help him gather our two cats up.Β I go over to where the group is and my black cat, Cacoa, is rubbing up against the guyβs leg, purring, and doing her βlet me on your lapβ meow.Β The other cat, Jasper, is sitting at the window, chilling out.Β I go over and pick up Cacoa and tell the big dude sheβs harmless, loves laps, and would be thrilled if he pet her.Β Very slowly he touches my catβs face, and she leans right into his hand.Β He then pets her back and sighs because sheβs really soft and purring like mad.Β After a few minutes he asks how to pick her up and if itβs okay if she sits on his lap.
He spent the next six hours spoiling my cat.Β The next week he showed up with cat treats and toys because he fell in love with the cats.Β He told me he was doing some research on house cats, and even talked to a vet about them.Β A couple months later he adopted two cats and was as thrilled and excited as a new parent.Β
I used to work at this stable for icelandic horses and every now and then this man would turn up by the field to just watch the horses. One time I walked by him as I was going to get the horses inside, and he went βI always wanted to learn how to ride but Iβm afraid of horses because theyβre so huge. If I could ride ponies like this, maybe Iβd dare but now Iβm too big and heavy for them.β You should have seen his face when I told them that actually theyβre not ponies, just small horses and they could totally carry him. His face just lit up. Next thing Iβm helping him to get on back. Today he knows how to ride.
A few years ago my sister and I were in Daytona Beach, and we saw this huge, burly biker. Looked like the stereotypical biker: big black beard, the goggles, leather, and a bandana. He also had a baby carrier, and in that baby carrier was a tiny little orange Pomeranian. We complimented his dog and he said, in one of the deepest voices Iβve ever heard, βthanks, his nameβs Little Bear!β And he told us about how heβd take Little Bear out on his motorcycle everyday and how much the dog loved it.
One time a Barbie exhibit came to my local art museum and my sister in law and I went to go check it out. They had a lot of interactive stuff, including a shiny pink full-size Barbie convertible that you could sit in and have a docent snap a pic of you. Obviously we did that. As we were walking away, we saw two guys, probably in their 20βs, usual kind of tough guy bro dudes, walking towards us. I remember thinking to myself that these did NOT look like the type of guys Iβd ever expect to see at the art museum, much less in the Barbie exhibit. As they walked past, one of the guys saw the car, gasped and grabbed his friendβs arm and goes βDUDE!!! Dude, we HAVE to take a picture in the Barbie car!!β His friend goes βAw, come onβ¦.thats gayβ¦.β His friend stopped, looked at his buddy and said βDude, whereβs your sense of whimsy? Letβs go have fun, nobody is gonna make fun of you for sitting in the Barbie car.β The other guy looked down, then looked back up grinning and was like βYouβre right. Letβs go sit in the Barbie car.β As we were leaving the museum, we saw them taking pictures of themselves in the life-size Barbie display box, trying to strike a Barbie pose and cracking up. Now whenever my sister in law or I balk from doing something fun, weβll look at the one balking and say βwhereβs your sense of whimsy? Go sit in the Barbie car!!β
A fish trying not to get eaten wouldnβt slow down when the βpredatorβ slows down. It also wouldnβt constantly swim in a circle near the edge of the tank; Itβd try hiding. Also a fish in a tank in a a public place that is constantly filled with people is not likely to see people as predators.
yeah that fish is absolutely playing with that kid, if it really wanted to escape it would just dive into the reef in the center of the tank!
(Moorish Idols are reef fish and naturally will seek shelter in the nearest nook or cranny if they get scared.)
many people donβt realize this, but fish arenβt stupid animals! most of them are on par with mammals like mice and squirrels in terms of intelligence, and they absolutely do play.
Hi! Professional marine biologist and aquarist here- fish absolutely play, and not only that, can be trained.
I accidentally trained a fish once through playing.
Let me explain.
The small-time aquarium I worked at about 4 years ago had a decent sized female Sheephead. Sheephead are bright red with the males sporting a black head, and get big.Β Iβm talking almost 1m long at full maturity (and may or may not transition from female to male depending on the number of males present). Point is, even though not fully matured, this Sheephead was a bit of a heavyweight in her kelp forest tank with a length of about 1ft making her the resident Biggest Dog In The Yard. And she absolutely knew it. She would bully her tankmates if she wanted to steal their food.
The thing about this Sheephead- letβs call her Red- is that she had one heck of aΒ βtude. Red was known to splash aquarists whenever they fed the tank, and at almost a foot long with a wide tail, her splashes had quite a bit of heft and would soak you from the torso down. We were advised to bring a towel or two to protect ourselves from most of the drenching. When it was my go-around to feed Redβs tank, I was fairly new to the little facility, but I had been warned in advance of Redβs penchant for food thievery. I noticed she would follow my hand movements, so I slowly moved to drop her food in a far corner, and fed her tankmates directly from my hands or by tong if they were too deep. I always made sure Red had plenty to eat, but I didnβt want her to associate the food with bad behavior, so I treated her to a bit extra food whenever she didnβt steal food. One day, she made a beeline to the surface so fast that she did a small jump, her entire head breaching the water. She wasnβt bothering her tankmates or doing anything remotely dangerous- and full disclosure, it was cute seeing a fish jump for joy- so I laughed and gave her another piece of food.
Naturally, positive reinforcement led to her connecting the dots that jumping at the surface, even the tiny jumps she was doing, meant she got more food.
This started to become an everyday occurrence, whenever I was assigned to feed Redβs tank. She would jump, just enough for her head to pop out, then sheβd wait patiently for me to give her the treat she CLEARLY earned. It even got to the point that sheβd open her mouth and Iβd drop the food right into those massive jaws- this was preferable to her Kenghis Khan-ing her way through a shower of chopped squid like the Tasmanian Devil, as there was less risk of her accidentally (or purposefully) biting a tankmate that got too close. Red became a polite eaterΒ for the first time.
It wasnβt until I noticed she followed me around outside of feeding time that I realized Red was playing with me.
I never got splashed by Red even once. My coworkers, however, received quite the dunking whenever it was their turn to feed the kelp tank.

i literally love saying "ON IT BOSS!!!!!" whenever someone asks me to do something like i'm some sort of henchman. it doesn't matter if they're my boss or not for real even because in the moment they are, and whatever they requested of me i'm on it
