Mi Taylor is a shifty young wanderer who happens upon the small English village of Sewels with the intent to swindle and cheat anyone who will trust him, but his dark past as an ex-jockey has left him bitter and secretive.
Velvet Brown is the youngest daughter of the Sewels butcher, endlessly devoted to her family and known throughout the village for her dreamy ways and her obsessive love for horses.
Velvet immediately arranges for Mi to work as in her father’s butcher shop when she realizes that he knows about horses, and Mi’s plans to rob the family are put on hold when he finds in the Brown family a home he never had. Mi and Velvet are drawn into a secret plot together when Velvet wins a magnificent horse called the Pie, whom Velvet believes can win the Grand National, the most dangerous steeplechase in the world. With every odd against them and their own unique relationship complicating the mix, Mi and Velvet set out to do the impossible and change their lives forever.
