I constantly see stuff in windows (people, mostly men). Those things are black silhouettes without details and if I really look it just goes away (mostly it fades away but sometimes it actually walks away). I'm pretty sure it's not real but it's really bothering me! I can't stay home alone without a friend coming by and I also stopped babysitting because of this. I always start crying, sometimes even at school. (Alixandra pt 1)
(Alixandria pt 2) When I'm at home and my mom's there she always offers to go and see that there's nothing there but sometimes I'm too panicked to go looking at it. I also have troubles sleeping. This thing started when I got kind of sad all the time because of all the stuff going on in my life. I don't know what this is and what I should do to calm myself? Because after it I know it wasn't real but at that moment I'm really scared. Thanks in advance! (please tag this Alixandra!)
That sounds really scary, I’m sorry you have to go through this. I think it’s good that you know these silhouettes aren’t real, although I know that doesn’t mean that they aren’t scary. It’s also great that your Mum is being understanding and that she helps by checking that nothing is there for you.
It sounds like it is really affecting your functioning, which makes me think that it is important for you to get some professional help. I think talking to your Mum about this would be a good place to start, you could tell her that you want help to work through what’s happening and then you could both go to the doctor and explain your symptoms. Your doctor can then refer you to a therapist who will be able to help you work through everything that’s happening for you.
In terms of managing in the moment and calming yourself you could try some grounding techniques, there is one in particular I think would work for you in these situations and that is saying grounding sentence such as ‘My name is … I live at ……… and I am safe’, repeating this over and over might help you feel safe and calm. You could also try some self soothe strategies like having a bath or a nice hot chocolate.
