When Noctis looks up at the sky, he thinks of the stories his father told him when he was a child. He remembers one about a boy who never wanted to grow up. He remembers pixie dust and treasure maps and all sorts of adventures he’d go on in Neverland.
“Second star to the right,” Noctis whispers, “and straight on till morning.”
This was my contribution to the @everafterzine! I had a great time working on this fic and hope to revisit this universe sometime in the near future!

Excerpt:
Dick takes a seat in one of the lawn chairs. He pulls up the footage recorded on the camera installed in the lenses of his mask, finding the point where Sensei sicced what few assassins he had on the island on them. As he watches the footage, he recalls how… difficult it was to fight the hooded assassin. It was like the man knew his every move, like they’ve fought before.
Ra’s al Ghul and Sensei knew Batman’s fighting style. They didn’t care about Robin’s fighting style, or Nightwing’s fighting style. Though the hooded figure was obviously taught a few tricks with that sword, Dick recognizes that it’s not the style he’s accustomed to using.
Dick knows his style anywhere. After all, he was the one who trained him.

Read on Ao3 | Tip Jar
It’s been nearly a year since Vergil last visited Fortuna.
In truth, he wasn’t particularly fond of the city―he found it odd that humans would want to worship a demon, even if that demon had allied himself with humanity. He might even go as far as to say it was a bit unsettling, considering the demon in question happened to be his father.
His reasons for visiting this time around had little to do with business… there were a few things he needed to look into here, but they weren’t pressing matters. They could wait a day or two.
This matter could not… nor should it.
She stops him at the city gate, her hand gently grasping his wrist.
“You’ll come back, right?”
It’s silly―he had outright abandoned his human emotions long ago, deeming them unnecessary in the wake of his mother’s brutal murder. What use were they if he wasn’t able to protect the people he cared about?
And yet…
“Yes,” Vergil says, after a moment. “How long I’ll be, I’m not sure… but I’ll come back.”
She smiles at him. “I’ll wait for you, then.”
Her home is in ruins―the furniture is torn to shreds, the walls are splattered with blood, and her body lies in a heap nearby the fireplace. Limbs of the demons he slayed are scattered about, filling the room with an odor so fowl Vergil wonders if it’s toxic.
When Vergil sits down on the couch, reality hits him. She’s dead.
You weren’t there to save her.
Suddenly, he’s not in her house… now, he’s a child, watching as his mother is gruesomely hacked to bits by demons. He’s frozen in fear, his eyes wide and filled with tears. He’s not able to run away when the demons turn on him, tearing him away from his brother, the only family he has left.
You were weak then, he thinks, and you’re weak now.
Vergil looks down at her. Though their communication had been limited, he still received a letter from time to time. Suddenly, he regrets not getting in touch with her more often. He regrets not coming a day or two sooner.
Weak, his mind hisses, weak, weak, weak, weak, weak!
In one swift motion, Vergil strikes the nearest object―a coffee table, now stained with the blood of the woman and the demons who murdered her. For the first time since he was a child, he lets out a scream of anguish.
“Failure!” Vergil spits, “You failed to protect your mother, and now you fail to protect her―”
The woman you love.
Love.
Vergil raises his fist, prepared to turn what remains of the coffee table to dust when he hears something. He freezes, straining to hear.
Crying. Someone is crying.
Vergil follows the sound, though it takes little more than a few seconds to find where it’s coming from. The door has been torn off its hinges and thrown to the side, the wood cracked and splintered. He enters the room, finding a crib in the center of the room.
He feels his heart sink into the pit of his stomach.
Vergil walks up to the crib, finding a crying baby. He’s unsure if the wailing is a result of the demons or his outburst from earlier, but that’s not the thing he’s most concerned about.
White hair, blue eyes. The child appears to be three months old, perhaps four, if he had been born premature. The timing lines up perfectly.
When did she plan on telling me?
There’s an odd feeling in his chest when he lifts the child into his arms, but it’s not an unpleasant feeling. It’s soft and warm, like the sweaters his mother would make him and his brother wear on particularly cold days.
“Hush,” Vergil whispers, his tone soft. “You’re safe. No harm will come to you… not while I’m here.”
It takes him longer than he would’ve liked to console the crying baby―whether it was because he could sense Vergil’s demonic aura or he was just that poor with children, he isn’t sure, but in the end, the crying stops. Eventually, he falls asleep, the demons now a distant memory.
Vergil lays the child down in the crib and leaves the room. He has questions, and the only person in this city who could possibly answer them is dead.
That didn’t mean the answers were lost forever, though.
Vergil’s search takes him to her bedroom, where everything has been torn to shreds. Half of the roof has collapsed, the furniture is splintered, and the floor is covered in claw marks. The smell of rain hangs heavy in the air―he needs to work quickly, lest the rain destroy any potential clues to the child’s identity.
In the end, he finds a half-written letter hidden beneath the remains of a desk. Its contents takes up less than half a page, and for a moment, Vergil fears he might not get the answers he needs.
Vergil,
I apologize for not responding to your letter sooner. It would seem life has been getting in the way in more ways than one. I’m sure the time must be flying by for you, since you’re keeping yourself so busy, and I suppose the same could be said for me.
This is something I’ve wanted to bring up to you for months, but it didn’t feel right to tell you in a letter. Of course, that was back when I thought you’d only be a few months, and now it’s been just over a year. It isn’t fair to keep such a thing from you, and I think it would be unwise of me to drop the bomb when you return.
You have a son.
His name is Nero, and he’s almost four months old. I have no doubts that he’s yours. He has your hair, your eyes. Even if he didn’t, you were the last person I was with. I’m sorry I waited so long to tell you, but the last thing I wanted to do was distract―
Vergil drops the letter.
He had his suspicions as soon as he laid eyes on the boy, but the confirmation feels like a knife to the gut. Whatever pride he feels is overshadowed by guilt―if you had just been a little faster, you could’ve saved her. You’ve not only ended one life, but you’ve ruined another.
By now, the rain has started pouring. The letter is now soaked, the ink on the page becoming splotchy. Vergil watches as the words become illegible until something else catches his eye.
A photograph.
The frame is shattered, leaving the picture exposed to the rain. Half of it is ruined beyond repair, but Vergil is able to salvage the half that depicts a smiling Nero. He tucks the photograph into his coat―it’s no longer needed here.
There’s only one thing left to do.
The rain shows no signs of stopping as Vergil walks the streets of Fortuna. He keeps Nero tucked under his cloak, sheltering him from the cold and the rain. He remains vigilant, eyes scanning dark corners for lurking demons.
Fortunately, his destination is not much further.
The only orphanage in Fortuna is in the center of the city, directly across from the cathedral. Though it’s as grandiose as the cathedral, there’s a grim aura surrounding it―it smells of withering hope and decaying dreams, much like a prison.
“Ba?”
Vergil looks down, finding Nero awake. The child’s eyes are wide with some semblance of trust―oh, if only you knew what comes next―and that’s when Vergil’s façade falls apart.
“I wish we could have met under better circumstances,” Vergil says, watching as Nero’s tiny hand wraps around his finger. “Perhaps, in another lifetime, we could’ve been a proper family.”
Dante! Vergil! Run!
Mama!
“This isn’t goodbye, Nero. As soon as I make things right, I’ll come back for you.”
Vergil’s eyes sting with tears as he gently lowers Nero down onto the steps of the orphanage. The child begins to cry, pulling at the heartstrings that Vergil thought he severed long ago.
“I’ll come back,” he repeats, turning away. “That’s a promise.”

Ignis chuckles softly, following Prompto over to where he's stowed away his various equipment cases. He helps Prompto put away his share of the equipment, leaving Talcott's items be before returning to the ballroom. They walk over to the dance floor, finding an opening near the center of the crowd.
"May I have this dance?" Ignis asks, holding out his hand.

Leon exhales slowly, leaning back in his chair. He closes his eyes for a few moments in a futile attempt to save himself the eye strain, but he knows at this point it's too late. Even with his eyes shut, he still sees lines of code, as though they've been etched into the inside of his eyelids.
When he volunteered to look into the DTD, he had expected a handful of complications, even with Tron's assistance. He was aware it'd take time and require a great deal of patience.
Leon considers himself to be a patient man—with all the shit he deals with, he has to be—but he's starting to reach his limit. He dangerously close to summoning his gunblade and destroy the damned thing, but he knows that'll set them back a few months. They can't afford to lose any progress now.
"Figured you'd be here."
Leon opens his eyes and turns the chair so he's facing Cloud. "Something up?"
Cloud shakes his head, leaning back against the wall. "It's my turn to drag you home."
"It's not even that late," Leon says, turning to check the time on the screen. "It's only... oh. Almost one in the morning."
"Hence why I'm here to take you home."
Leon lets out a sigh. "Okay. Give me five minutes and—"
"You've been at it long enough today," Cloud says, shoving himself off the wall. "Let Tron know you'll be back tomorrow."
Leon has half a mind to remind Cloud just how important the work he's doing is—the DTD holds information that could prove useful to Sora, Donald, and Goofy—but he knows better. He's known Cloud long enough to determine that if he doesn't come quietly, he'll make good on his promise to drag him home.
So, he turns back to the computer, lets Tron know he's going home for the night, and follows Cloud out to the postern.
The sky is an inky black when they emerge. The only source of light comes from the makeshift lamps dimly illuminating the restoration site, offering Leon's eyes a much-needed break after staring at a computer screen for twelve hours. There's a light chill to the air, a pleasant feeling after being stuck in a stuffy lab all day.
The walk back to the borough is comfortably silent. It's not until they enter Merlin's house Cloud speaks.
"Aerith saved you dinner," he says, walking down the stairs leading to the kitchen.
Leon considers just going straight to bed—he feels exhausted, now that he thinks about it—but his stomach growls in protest and he relents, walking down to the kitchen. He finds Cloud leaning against the counter, waiting for the countdown on the microwave's timer to reach zero.
Admittedly, Leon's glad it's Cloud who came to the lab to get him to come home. If it were Aerith, she'd lecture him about how he needs to take care of himself. If it were Tifa, she'd go on and on about how he shouldn't be afraid to ask for help. If it were Cid—actually, Cid probably would've just bitched about reheating dinner.
Cloud, on the other hand, never lectured him. Whether it was because he knew Leon couldn't stand it or if he was aware it'd make him a hypocrite, he wasn't sure, but the reason didn't matter. Nothing really mattered at half past one in the morning except a hot meal and a comfortable bed.
Cloud stops the microwave a few seconds before the alarm is set to go off and clears the timer. He takes the bowl out of the microwave, grabs a spoon from the drawer, and sets the bowl down on the table.
Leon perks up a little—he hasn't had Cid's curry since they were stuck in Traverse Town. It takes all his self-control to not scarf the whole thing down.
"You want some barley tea?" Cloud asks.
Leon shakes his head.
"Didn't think so." Cloud gives him something resembling a smirk. "Y'know, you could just tell Aerith you don't like it."
Leon shrugs in response. Sure, he could tell her he doesn't like barley tea... or he could allow Aerith continue with her culinary experiments.
Cloud sits down in front of Leon. After a moment, he reaches out to take Leon's free hand, giving it a gentle squeeze.
"Someday, when all this is over," Cloud says, "we should go on a date. An actual date."
Leon squeezes Cloud's hand in return. He feels bad—he can't remember when they went on a date. Come to think of it, he's not so sure they've ever had an actual date. He remembers countless attempts, all of which had been interrupted by some sort of disaster, from invasions of heartless to the claymores malfunctioning to a delay in reconstruction.
Now, though...
Radiant Garden's restoration is making great progress. Cid has taken care of the remaining bugs with the town's defense mechanism, and in turn, the heartless attacks aren't near as devastating. The DTD is another matter entirely, but perhaps it wouldn't hurt for him to take a day off.
"Why wait?" Leon asks, finishing the last of his curry. "I don't think Tron would mind if I took a day off every once in a while."
Cloud smiles. "I think it can wait long enough for you to get some sleep."

After the tarts have been finished off and the dishes have been put into the sink, a big black dog bounds into the dining room, followed closely by a smaller white dog. Ignis chuckles fondly upon seeing Umbra with both leashes in his mouth, his tail wagging ferociously.
"Noctis, I thought you walked them before dinner," Luna says, taking the leashes from Umbra.
"I thought you did," Noctis counters.
Luna rolls her eyes, but the smile doesn't leave her face. "Then I suppose we'd best take care of it now before there's an accident on my new carpet." She turns to Aqua. "Would you like to come along, Aqua? I know Umbra and Pryna have missed you dearly."
Aqua turns to Ignis, silently asking for permission. Ignis chuckles in response. "Go on, Aqua. Besides, I'm sure you and Luna have much to talk about."
Aqua's face lights up. She wraps her arms around he father, murmuring a word of thanks before taking Pryna's leash and hooking it onto her collar.
"Be safe, you two," Noctis says. "We'll see you in a bit."
It's not until Luna and Aqua have left that Ignis realized he'd been lured into something resembling a trap.

“I see we need a new couch, then.”
Ignis earns a guilty whimper in response from the culprit—a blond werewolf—and turns towards him. “Now, now, Prompto, I’m not upset. If anything, it’s my fault—had I known there was a full moon tonight, I wouldn’t have left you cooped up in this house by yourself.”
“Aroowhh,” Prompto whines.
Ignis approaches the werewolf, giving him a gentle scratch under his chin. “I could have put off feeding one more day, especially since I have plenty of blood on reserve here.”
When Prompto makes no response, Ignis lets out a sigh, gently tilting his head down so he can make eye contact. “There’s no need to worry about the couch, love—the pattern on that one was hideous, anyway.”
Prompto lets out a questioning whimper, to which Ignis responds with a soft kiss to his forehead. “We’ll talk patterns once you’ve returned to your human form, Prompto. For now, why don’t we go out for a walk? I’m sure you’ve had enough of being stuck inside this house for one night.”
