Kurt Schwitters: Merzbarn wall

La Escocesa presentation part 5. A few other projects need to be at least represented here as i was talking about my work and trying to cover all bases! The first picture is from a trip to the Merz Barn in Cumbria. i collected a large amount of broken bottles and , pieces of glass and pottery from what looked to be a victorian dump near to the merz barn. I needed to make a record of all the pieces but didn’t want to carry them all back to Manchester so i drew the outline on these pieces of scrap paper.

The next image is also from that Merz barn trip but another day when i was spending time trying to dry out books that had been dampened during heavy rainfall and a slightly leaky yurt ! it was a small event where i tried to show the children at the merz barn just a few of the many cool books in the collection.

Jill Randall opens at the Merzbarn

Went up to the Merzbarn yesterday (28/06/14) where Jill Randall is showing a number of her miniature sheds from the series "Sheds of Rochdale".  

The first photograph is of a new sculpture the Merzbarn "office" the stuff on the roof is not now there but was when the photographs that Jill worked from were taken.  The sheets of corrugated iron were not very secure and so were weighted to stop them from blowing off in the autumn and winter gales. The sheets are now secure.

The exhibition is not in the Merzbarn itself but in the Gallery/Studio and the compactness of the space and the views from the windows of ramshackle erections on this land fit the subject matter beautifully.

The Bakery with photograph of  Kurt Schwitters and "Shadow portrait of tree" by AngieNik and PaulFC still in reasonable condition.

The depredations of time and a misplaced tarp.  This small building which was Schwitters' studio has been unfortunately damaged when a visiting group attached a tarpaulin to the stonework and a gust of wind took it and the stonework out.  

Cakes in the "Cake shop window" Schwitters had plans to make a little money from the walkers who passed the Merzbarn by selling them cake and so Celia and Ian (trustees of the charity) have a requirement that if you wish to show work in this part you must bake cakes.  I ate one of Celia's buns and it was lovely.
