Merlin Secrets and Magic Ep. 12 The Dragon’s Den

Colin Morgan: You see Morgana become so impassioned and ehm, so against Uther that it’s actually becoming quite dangerous and very worrying.

Katie Mcgrath: She becomes a vessel for a spell that is cast over all of Camelot.

(scene shows Kilgharrah saying. “The source of this pestilence is The Witch, the Lady Morgana”)

Colin Morgan: He is put into a position where he has to make a decision which is …very out of character.

(scene shows Merlin offering Morgana the poisoned water bag)

Colin Morgan: He has to uhm, literally poison a friend, you know, kill a friend, ehm, but for the greater good. It’s… (Smiles) It’s not an easy decision.

Katie Mcgrath: He can either save Camelot or let me live. So in order to save Camelot and Arthur and the Once and Future King, he has to kill Morgana.

Johnny Caps: Does he poison somebody that he, in a way, cares about but is suspicious of or does he let her live and therefore let the rest of Camelot die? Either decision is really difficult for Merlin.

Katie Mcgrath: He kills her because he believes he had to and he kills her because Morgana’s magic has taken her somewhere that his magic never would and Merlin and Morgana can’t be friends because of that. They started all from the same place but they’ve gone completely opposite directions and their friendship isn’t going to come back from that.

Johnny Caps: And we liked that because, you know, let’s push Merlin into uh, making a very very difficult decision and it is an awful decision that he has to make but there is hope there for Morgana because Morgause takes her away and there absolutely a sense that Morgause will save Morgana. And that creates for us a delicious dilemma because when Merlin gets to meet Morgana again, what would her attitude be towards Merlin, what would her attitude be towards Camelot, and what has Morgause been telling her?

Colin Morgan: It was important to get that right and uhm Jeremy Webb and director was great because he uh completely pushed us and spent the time on it.

Katie Mcgrath: I hope I never have to do it again. It was horrible. I made Colin cry, well I made Merlin cry but it’s the same thing.

Katie Mcgrath: Episode 3 is the first time you really see Morgana having an active power. Before her powers have been sort of confined to seeing the future in dreams and now it’s sort of moved out from inside hear head to outside and she starts still not being able to control them so it’s quite a violent manifestation of her powers as opposed to Merlin’s which are sort of calm and very controllable.

Colin Morgan: He knows Morgana has magic. He knows that she doesn’t know about him and Merlin desperately, desperately would love to confide in her and Merlin feels that she needs guidance, she needs a hand because Merlin very much views Morgana as being a friend, as being close he wants to look after, he wants to, he wants to make sure she’s going to be okay.

s1x07 - kilgharrah tells merlin to let mordred die

s2x11 - kilgharrah tells merlin "The ancient prophecies speak of an alliance of Mordred and Morgana united in evil, but this union must be stopped, whatever the cost. "

s2x12 - kilgharrah pressures merlin to kill morgana to stop the sleeping spell. merlin poisons morgana

s2x12 - merlin frees kilgharrah. kilgharrah destroys camelot

s3x02 - "it's my fault. I should've listened to you. Should never have trusted Morgana.""trust is a double edged sword", "i thought we were the same", "i will never be like her", "I fear that your futures are now joined forever" "darkness to your light" "hatred to your love" "No. All I feel for her is...sad. She's become so bitter, so full of hate." .

s3x05 - kilgharrah refuses to save morgana from death. merlin forces him to give the power. "Kilgharrah: you should rejoice merlin, she's dead. it makes no difference that i knew all along that she was uther's daughter."

morgana's window break

uther blames a magic attack

uther orders arthur to arrest anyone suspicious (mostly druids hiding in city)

while ^^^ happening, morgana is confiding to gaius (merlin overhears)

merlin asks gaius to tell morgana the truth, gaius gets angry with merlin

merlin brings flowers to morgana, talks to the worried gwen

morgana breaks the vase with the flowers

morgana goes to gaius quarters and ffinds merlin instead (i wish there was smth i could say)

merlin asks kilgharrah for help. he doesnt help

arthur and leon plan on arresting ppl using the list. merlin is there cleaning arthur's armor

merlin saves forridel in exchange for location of the druids

merlin delivers a potion to morgana

morgana asks merlin if it's magic for the 2nd time

he tells her other ppl can help, he gives location of the druids to morgana.

morgana escapes to the druids. uther blames magic again

gaius confronts merlin

uther orders all the arrested ppl be executed immediately if morgana isnt returned

merlin blasts the gate and runs after morgana

arthur confirms morgana's and the druids' apparent location because of the blasted gate

season 1

WILL - morgana was the first to offer support to merlin's cause, arthur followed, will got hit with an arrow for arthur

season 2

FREYA - merlin stole morgana's dress for her coz he wanted to make her more confident and happy, arthur ran a sword thru freya in her bastet form

BALINOR - dragon's payment was to be freed in exchange for telling merlin how to cure the curse (kill morgana), merlin and arthur persuaded (guilted) balinor enough to come back, balinor takes a hit for merlin

morgana loses alvarr and the other radicals, gains an ally in morgause

season 3

NOBODY THAT MERLIN MORGANA LOVES DIES. (yay?)

merlin gains an ally in gwaine (but dude dislikes magic so he's kinda like arthur too)

season 4

LANCELOT - morgana unleashes dorocha to spread havoc, lancelot sacrifices himself to stop merlin from sacrificing himself in arthur's place

at this point, morgana loses morgause too.. and then agravaine and helios later (close confidants and allies of morgana).

season 5

FINNA - arthur and morgana both chase merlin and the sorceress down to the point where finna sacrificed herself for merlin

DAEGAL - morgana machinations made him and daegal meet, daegal works for and then against morgana, takes an arrow meant for merlin

at this point morgana loses daegal and also the whole catha sect. (possible strong allies of morgana). Notably though, this is Morgana real attempt to kill Merlin once and for all (bruh it took morgana 5 seasons and it wasnt even for revenge, but just a step in the destabilization plan) merlin has no real magical allies now. tho gwaine is there as next closest thing (but not magic related)

it's interesting how it's all interconnected though.

S1 and S2 Morgana started out as Merlin's biggest direct and unknowing supporter, with her being the first to offer support to save his mom and also her dress clothed Merlin's girlfriend in her final resting place.

Fires of Idirsolas tore them apart and lead to Morgana and Balinor slipping from Merlin's life.

S3 was a respite with no familial deaths. Though it was the tipping point with the addition of Gwaine serving as Merlin's new sword ally (kinda like replacement for Lancelot/Morgana but not quite).

S4 Morgana steps into her power and destiny to terrorize the whole community, although the price merlin paid was his own and last true best friend and ally as well.

S5 Morgana is at the peak of her hunt for Emrys and her quest to truly embitter Arthur against all magic-folk. She personally targets t kill Merlin using Daegal and was finally successful (more successful than the fomorrah incident at least).
