This is a test of my fandom-old memory but imho the big turn-around happened in early 2015 as they were filming March/April on screen. Robron won something like "Best soap moment of 2014" in All About Soap mag (RIP I miss you) for their first kiss, beating literally every huge soap moment. It was fan voted and not to say I helped make it happen but I urged a lot of voting via @aaronandrobert because at that time there was huge interest but general audiences hated them and everyone was super keen to voice their interest. This must have been a crazy sign to Kate Oates that she had something special and from that I think they decided to kill two birds with one stone and have Aaron's abuse story help redeem Rob. Here's my cringe post from 2015 telling people how they could show support

also re: general audience response, i will legit never forget my boss tuning into emmerdale for the first time for the episode where aaron reveals his abuse to robert and her main takeaway to that entire episode was “that blonde one is shifty. he’s up to no good.”

ryan's first episode is 15 june. his character has an important role on the hospital board and knows cam from the past. he dresses smart like robert, but i think he's going to be a darker character (well, not a killer but dark in a different way)
