How can we memorialize and visualize the extraordinary loss of life caused by COVID-19, even as it continues to rage throughout the world? In advance of his upcoming exhibition A Crack in the Hourglass: An Ongoing COVID-19 Memorial, opening October 29, artist Rafael Lozano-Hemmer invites the public to submit photographs of loved ones lost to COVID-19 at acrackinthehourglass.net, accompanied by a personalized dedication.⁠ ⁠ Originally commissioned by the Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo in Mexico City in 2020, this installation is the first live presentation of the work, offering physical space to collectively mourn and honor victims of COVID-19 in New York City—an area with one of the highest number of pandemic-related deaths in the United States—and worldwide. ⁠

Small update to the zen garden

My grandma always likes to give me little gifts for my cats and my home when she sees me, which is only every few months and since she knew I started a little garden, she gave me these little buddies.

My Oingo Boingo Ink

I grew up listening to them, I remember driving in the car with my dad on the way to school, singing "Who Do You Want to Be?" with the volume turned up all the way.

Those memories, the small things I have with my dad, help me remember him in my moments of sadness, loneliness, happiness, joy... anything.

The small things keep my father with me, so it'll be with me forever, until I meet him again.

Very shortly after my other mawmaw passed, and only a few days after Christmas, I lost another special woman in my life, my grandmaw.  I made this tribute to her, which was printed and given to my two aunts.

Why don’t you write down what you tell me? I can’t hold it in my head. You write it down, Mami. Neither of us wrote anything down, I imagine, not wanting to have a truth spelled out in a language we could not ignore or take back.
