Reading "One Piece" For the First Time: Part 22 In what can only be a genius visual metaphor and mimicry of the plot: The Meme in Progress is playing whack-a-mole in the desert with one of these "Baroque Works" guys, alongside the Blue Nosed Reindeer, who is now in the form of a particularly creative furry paralysis demon. They're engaged in a baseball battle, which they eventually win, to recapture a city being taken over by a Crocodile. Whilst The Meme in Progress is a favourite, having to fight with guile and wits rather than bullshit, he still sort of pulled victory out of his arse here. Still, I'm glad he's not been killed off. As much as with every fibre of my being I hope that The Idiot actually is dead, the Universe wishes me to suffer. Speaking of suffering. The Giga Chad is having a pretty good kung-fu fight with a shapeshifting swan man (this is my least favourite Genesis album art...) who gets one up on him by transforming not into his friends (that gag where The Giga Chad just kicked him in the face was pretty funny) but *Gasp* A WOMAN! Dated gag, sure, but that he's kind of into it is funny. I'll allow it. Him winning and still shaking hands with his opponent afterwards? Giga Chad behaviour. Aww dude, don't tell The Himbo you're a human sword! You'll never hear the end of his obsessive questions! That guy is only attracted to fucking swords. Alright, but this is on you, don't say I didn't warn you when you're prying him off from humping your fucking leg and talking about different "stances" like it's some fucking incel obsessed with lightsaber stances expounding that knowledge to you when you tell him he's being silly for not thinking women belong in Warhammer (True story that, by the way, minus the leg humping. He blocked me on Facebook) How many of these fruits are there? Are they catalogued? I'd like a plot following the guy whose job it is to log and record and follow these fruits, and work out just where they came from and why they're so ubiquitous. Heck, I'd like an investigation into which greengrocer is selling this shit to people: guy should be jailed for arms dealing. I'm glad that the Cartographer with a Brain Cell is getting a fight, even if it's somebody's kink where she faces a high-heeled spike lady.
The Crocodile takes on 4 random dudes who drank poison to make them stronger, then kills another Black Panther Fruit Man in a single panel. I like this villain. Not because he killed The Idiot (because he didn't. If he had, I'd erect a fucking statue to this guy) but because he has goals and seems like an actual threat. Fuck the chapter's message though: "the monarchy actually is correct and looking out for you, rebellious working classes, the king was just being manipulated by foreign criminal elements who are also stoking up the rebellion for their own ends". Yikes. Though I do suppose that foreign nations creating artificial scarcity in order to sow dissent and swoop in to take what they want is timely...
The literal ticking clock adds to the drama, and this feels like more of a culminating arc than many before it.
All of that does not matter, however, because this chapter commits the most unforgivable sin: Right when the Crocodile Man is giving his gloating speech to the Princess and tossing her off the roof (not unlike what The Himbo wishes to do with Blades...) The Idiot swoops in and reveals he is alive, transforms into inflation fetish porn and just starts wiping the floor with the Crocodile with knowledge from off screen. Only the Crocodile uses his full extent of his powers and this Idiot cannot possibly win, only he does because... He literally says "I took a nap, so I'm better now!"
Is the titular great treasure the fucking ghost residing in the plot machine? Crocodile turning on the Rodeo Stripper was expected, but still well done: right when she was given some semblance of a personality. Girl Uryu and the Navy showing up and teaming up with the Himbo to find the bombs was satisfying, it suitably distracts me from the bullshit fight going on underground. But when they introduce more of the Baroque Guys atop the clock tower, they don't land as hard as they should because it's been going on for so bloody long at this point. Yet taking out the cannon on the clock tower was still earned. Honestly the best arc so far, despite the fucking Idiot
