In defense of memes
When you think about it, a meme is actually a really impressive thing. First, jokes are cognitively one of the hardest things for our brains to work with, since there has to be both a gap in logic and an understanding of that logic gap, in addition to social context and a general understanding of the situation presented in the joke (which itself requires vicarious experience of the context in which the joke is presented). Then the joke has to be funny, which means that any wordplay has to be clever and easily understandable by the audience, whether that wordplay is morphological, metalinguistic, or what have you. For the joke to become a meme, it must circulate among a community, that community must decide that it is of reasonable quality, and then it must be adapted in various forms and contexts by people other than the ones who created the joke in the first place. To create a meme is to take an existing idea (and a rather complex one at that) and then modify it so that the original concept is still present, but the details or ending are changed in a way that differentiates it from other variations on the meme while keeping the meme humorous. Pepe, JOHN CENA, successful kid, and other memes are actually indicative of a fairly high level of cognition (at least the funny ones are). Someone saw something, said “I can make a joke out of that”, and then others joined in and made the joke their own. Memes are pretty cool.
