The Sadness Of Summer
written by a tired mermaid
Every summer, I rise again.
not reborn just… returned.
to the ache. to the salt. to the things I can’t forget.
My hair smells like shipwrecks and low tide.
my skin catches the sun, but inside, it’s all deepwater silence.
no one sees the weight I carry beneath the shimmer.
no one ever does.
I fall in love with strangers who live on land.
with boys who stare too long at the sea,
and believe in things that don’t survive the morning.
I dance for them on the rocks.
I sing like wind that’s lost its name.
they say i’m magic —
but magic always ends.
“why are you sad?” one asked, touching my hand.
“because light always leaves,” I said.
“and I was never meant to stay.”
Every summer ends.
And so do i.
Again and again and again.
I fade back into foam. Into myth.
Into a kiss that never reached your lips.
This is the sadness of summer:
a love that drowns before it’s born.
