i think the base game for z-a was alright. lumiose was the worst part of xy so hearing it was entirely set there didn't make it sound good, but i think it was fine this time. game freak has a lot more experience making 3d games (even if they still aren't that good at it), exploring it is more fun and it's full of more places to fly to, and the music they used this time doesn't get annoying when you hear it so much
lots of good character designs too. i liked jacinthe, canari, gwynn, lida, and lebanne. also really like what they did with emma and mable. and it was cool to get so many new mega evolutions (none for crobat though? disappointing. well at least it's in the game unlike last time)
and the story was fine i suppose. i don't think it's anything close to the best pokemon has ever had but i guess it fit with the gameplay. separately going through the z-a royale and fighting off rogue mega evolutions while getting to know people from different organizations around the city was a good way to structure things
the dlc though............. yikes. sure, i liked korrina coming back, i liked ansha, there's even more mega evolutions.... but that's about it. i don't really like time limits or resource management in games--not to say they shouldn't happen, but the fact that the donut system combined those two together made it hard for me to get into it for a while
and it just recycles lumiose city again? the other pokemon games that got dlc added entirely new areas you could go to--two each in fact, since they came in two waves--and they were cheaper. this is just.... go into a portal to a distorted chunk of the city, run around catching pokemon and doing tasks for points, do it again, do it again, do it again, do it again. and it was kind of annoying but mostly tolerable in the dlc story but once you get to the postgame and hit the special scans? i don't know who thought that system was a good idea but whoever it was i hope they get reassigned to something they're better at for the next game
like im really glad this is happening in the legends subseries because that's where they get experimental. that means they won't do it again right? i hope they think long and hard about why arceus was so well-liked and why this wasn't as much
so far i've enjoyed all of the main series pokemon games (even lgpe to some extent...), even though the switch games have been broadly less enjoyable than the previous ones, but this dlc makes me think maybe i shouldn't just expect them to always be fun. like i wouldn't go as far as to say i wish i hadn't gotten it, i think there's enough pieces of it that i liked that it's not completely terrible i guess. but it's kind of pushing it. making me wonder if there may be a future when i'm not grabbing every main series pokemon game. that's probably good tbh
