The hospitality and inclusivity of this city has been like no other, and it has been so great to have been a part of it these past few days. Maybe I'm getting old, or perhaps there's something in the water here, but these particular street campaigners highlight such inclusivity. Their efforts genuinely moved me. Seeing so many passers-by of all ages embrace these guys with handshakes, hugs, and support was immensely warming and reaffirms your faith in humanity. Thanks to these guys for bringing this cause to my attention; An important one to bridge division, especially in times like now. Thank you NOLA, you've been amazing! (I meant to make a post about this a while ago, but better late than never!)
Over the past few weeks, there have been #MeetAMuslim campaigns on my campus, with Muslim students holding signs and inviting passersby to ask them questions and learn more about Islam and Muslim Americans.
I asked what non-Muslims can do to show their support and help spread the message, and the student I spoke to directed me to the site trueislam.com. This site was made by Muslims in response to growing anti-Islam sentiment, and it contains 11 truths of Islam that you can endorse in order to be listed as a Muslim ally.
I know things are super stressful right now and it seems impossible for an average person to make any progress against all the shitty things going down, but this is an easy way to show support for Muslim Americans. It seems like a small thing, but the student I talked to was really enthusiastic about it and stressed the importance of getting the truth about Islam out to as many people as possible.
So learn some more about Islam (and there are lots of really good quotes from the Quran to use against Islamophobes), become an ally, and spread the word!
