Arisa Review (Recommended!)
Arisa is a Psychological Mystery Shoujo Drama written and illustrated by Natsumi Andou. It has 12 Volumes (44 chapters) and is a medium read, probably taking two evenings or a full day to finish.
Arisa’s plot follows Tsubasa, a tough 15-year old delinquent, reuniting with her twin sister, Arisa, after the two have been separated via their parents’ divorce. The two switch places for a day, and Tsubasa is charmed by her sister’s perfect school life. However, Tsubasa soon realizes that Arisa’s life isn’t perfect, and the secrets that her class is hiding leads Arisa into despair. Desperate to help her sister, Tsubasa disguises herself as Arisa once again, determined to stop a twisted game, and even more twisted classmates.
Arisa looks like your standard shoujo manga at first, but it soon quickly develops into a very interesting psychological drama. It’s very interesting seeing these two genres blend as they’re almost completely different from one another, however Arisa pulls it off very well. The manga’s not afraid to shy away from heavy topics typically unseen in shoujo manga, which helps raises the stakes for our main character. Of course, this is still a shoujo manga so there’s no blood or any sort of intense gore, and the psychological drama mostly contributes to it having a very interesting, well-paced, plot.

The society of the spectacle has molded us into presenters of our experiences instead of the enjoyers. We rush to tell, instead of standing still to absorb what is presented to us--as if the excelled sharing of the experience will somehow heighten the lessons and feelings we are given. We often mold our lives so it sounds good coming out of our mouths, hoping for validation from others instead of feeling the full experience of being. The idea that eyes are always on us shifts our choices, and makes us feel that the “wrong” choice, the choice less enjoyed by others, will set us back in our own self-worth. But we must remember that our lives are our own, and seeking constant validation is not the way to be present in this world. To truly be is to exist without the hopeful, side-ways glances towards others. Thank you for reading.
