AU where Hiro dies in the fire, only to unexpectedly come back. At first he haunts SFIT and actually tries to hand in work, despite being a yurei (he has two tiny hitodama) and therefore invisible. Tadashi finds out that he’s a medium and sits Hiro down for a LONG talk and…Hiro stayed on because he HAD TO GO TO NERD SCHOOL DAMNIT oh and get revenge on the guy who used his microbots to throw a beam at him, that too, but NERD SCHOOL. Hiro still ends up being a superhero, who uses a suit that he made with Tadashi’s help which can be possessed by ghosts.
Tadashi found out he was a medium because he noticed Hiro trying to hand in something he’d written, while everyone else is panicking about flying paper. Tadashi’s just like ????????? though until he googles ‘i can see ghosts help’ and works out from the Google search that he’s a medium.
Sometimes Tadashi lets Hiro possess him, mostly so he can talk to people who aren’t mediums, but usually Hiro uses stuff that Tadashi poured enough weird supernatural medium energy into to allow ghosts to touch it.
Tadashi manages to use one microbot as a conduit to allow Hiro to possess the microbots. All of them. Admittedly it only worked AFTER they’d removed the transmitter from Callaghan but Hiro retrieved most of the stuff in the portal (and Abigail) while holding the portal together with microbots…only to pass out from using up so much spectral energy. He’s fine after he sleeps for a week but they had to leave him there for the night because Tadashi was too tired to make himself solid to ghosts and Hiro was too busy sleeping to make himself solid to Tadashi.

(Ooooh, I’ve obviously seen this kind of situation with Tadashi - *coughBetwixtcough* - but not with Hiro. And HA of course Hiro would be stubborn enough to still try to go to Nerd School even after he’s DIED. HE ACTUALLY EXPENDED EFFORT, HE IS REAPING THE REWARDS, DANGIT ><)
