It was a challenging watch for me, since the film's slow pace really made me feel…bored. Nature overpowers man, and man cannot survive without the community…Yes, we know all that. But this story is just another confirmation bias for people whose parents can't pay for their Harvard law degree: privilege doesn't get you far in life. 

The movie follows the real-life story of Chris McCandless, who, after learning that he and his sister were illegitimate children of his father, who was still married to his first wife at the time of his second marriage, decides to "disappear" into the wilderness in the summer of 1990. After two years of travelling solo, he died from starvation in Alaska in 1992.

The film makes it difficult to empathise with the main character. With every mistake he makes, the audience must endure the fact that he was not prepared for his travels whatsoever. Unable to cross the river or tell the safe plant from the dangerous one. Perhaps if he chose to pursue his academic degree, he would be more prepared for the life that he was so set upon having: a life in nature without materialistic possessions and gifts of civilisation. 

However, if one watches this film and realises how silly it is to romanticise a life in nature, then it is worth their time after all.

Christopher McCandless’ın gerçek hayat hikâyesinden uyarlanan bu film, bir yolculuktan çok daha fazlasını anlatıyor: özgürlüğün, aidiyetsizliğin, yalnızlığın ve ruhun çağrısının öyküsünü...

Chris, toplumun kalıplarına sığamayan bir ruhtu. Başkalarının "başarı" dediği şey, onun için bir hapishaneden ibaretti. Elinin tersiyle ittiği her şey—para, statü, güvenli bir gelecek—onu o kadar bunaltmıştı ki, çareyi doğaya sığınmakta buldu. Ama asıl kaçtığı şey sistem değil, belki de kendisiydi.

Film boyunca Alaska'nın çiğ soğuklarında yalnız yürürken, Chris'in yalnızlığına tanıklık ediyoruz. Ama bu yalnızlık, bizim bildiğimiz türden değil. Sessiz, güçlü, içe işleyen bir yalnızlık bu. Kalabalıkların içinde kaybolmaktan çok daha gerçek. Belki de hepimizin içinde bir yerlerde bastırmaya çalıştığımız o soru yükseliyor: "Gerçekten yaşıyor muyum?"

Bu film, doğanın vahşiliğinde kaybolan bir adamın hikâyesi gibi görünse de, aslında hepimizin içinde kıpırdayan o özgürlük arzusunun hikayesi. Chris'in gözlerinden Alaska’ya bakarken, kendi içimize dönüyoruz. Kimi zaman onunla birlikte ürperiyor, kimi zaman içten içe onun cesaretine hayran kalıyoruz. Ama en çok da sonunda söylediği o cümle içimize işliyor:

"Happiness only real when shared."

Mutluluk, sadece paylaşıldığında gerçektir.

İnsanı derinden sarsan bir son... Özgürlüğe kavuştuğunda fark ettiği bir şey var: Hiçbir dağ, hiçbir nehir, hiçbir gökyüzü... paylaşılamıyorsa eksiktir. Çünkü biz insanlar, köksüz kalınca değil, bağsız kalınca savruluruz.
