So obviously as a media creator, I created this blog for the sole purpose for this to be a modern guide to media. I actually enjoyed running this blog, I may or may not post after this week (probably not, but we’ll see). Under the cut I’m going to list some resources for you all to create your own media guide.
Fact check.org is an excellent source to utilize. I use it quite often. click here to go to fackcheck.org
Policicheck.com is one to utilize if you are more into politics. I don’t use this as much, but still a good source. Click here to go to this website.
I know that I posted a link to this video before, but I love this video and it’s an excellent video to watch. Click here to watch Journalism: Last week tonight.
Here’s a website to check for fake news. Click here to go to the website.
What is journalism. Before you can do anything, you need to be informed on what journalism is. Click here to watch a video about journalism.
If you search anything I have talked about on this blog, you will probably find more sources! :)

The most pressing issues facing the media and media consumers/ producers today
One of the most pressing issue facing the media and the media consumers/ producers today is probably fake news. I know that I have talked a lot about fake news, but seriously, it is all around us. Chances are, your Facebook friends have shared a link that led to a fake news story or a sketchy site. I have been up since 7:15am today (5/1) and have seen 3 different story links, that I refuse to click on because just by reading the title that the link gives, it is fake and I’m not going to believe it anyways. So why waste my time?
Another issue that media and the media consumers/ producers face today is that not a lot of the younger generation (including my generation) watches the news or even bother looking at the news, unless it pertains to them and their lives. This is the reason why newspaper companies are failing and threatening to close their doors, thus making people lose their jobs.
Holy cow! Has it really been 16 weeks since going to the first 9am class of my college career since my fall semester of my freshman year?? I honestly cannot fathom that I went through this class and actually enjoyed it. I honestly just took this course because someone recommended it and I needed a UP WI. I really didn’t think that I would enjoy this class as much as I did. I just find it incredible. This was probably one of my favorite classes this semester.
Under the cut is what I learned and found most valuable
I think that one of the most important things that I learned in this class is to cross check facts. Even though I’m a biology major and I have to do that anyways, I realized that I have to do it for all my other classes.
Tying in with that, always being on the look out for “fake news”. As stated in a previous post. Being on the look out for “fake news” is very important, Basically you shouldn’t believe everything that you see or read on the internet.
There are a lot of things that you all should know about the media. But I’m only going to list a couple.
1.) newspapers and magazines are becoming more obsolete
2.) people (especially our generation and the younger generation) prefer to read books and magazines (does anyone from my generation really read magazines anymore???) that are online (google play, amazon, etc) than to have the physical copy of the book or whatever they are reading. Me, personally I prefer to have the physical copy of what I am reading. I get distracted easily if I am reading on my computer or mobile device, unless its social media (perks of having ADHD.. said no one ever)

Gillmor’s five principles of responsible content creation
There are 5 main principles of responsible content creation that are discussed in Dan Gilmor’s book.
1.) Thoroughness
2.) Accuracy
3.) Fairness
4.) Independence
5.) Transparency
Under the cut, I will discuss what each of these mean.
1.) Thoroughness- Always ask questions. Asking questions ensures that you are being thorough. Conducting interviews and conducting research can also fall into this category.
2.) Accuracy- this is the starting point for all solid information. Simply put for this: check your facts, and then check them again. Know how to verify facts and claims. Check your spelling
3.) Fairness- Even if you are coming at something from a specific bias or
world view, you can be fair to those who disagree with you by
incorporating their views into your own work, even if simply to
explain why you’re right and they’re wrong. Recognize that you can’t be perfectly fair, and that people will hear what you’ve said through the prisms of their own world views. It’s still worth trying. You can extend the principle of fairness by inviting others to join the conversation after publication. You can stress civility, moreover, as the guiding principle for the conversation.
4.) Independence- professional journalists claim independence. Typically they are forbidden to have direct or indirect financial conflicts of interest. Embrace more openness than before.
5.) Transparency- takes several forms, but what it essentially boils down to is that you are being open about what you do and who you are.
There are a lot of different ways that you can become a media creator.
1.) creating a blog- if you are reading this, you either have a tumblr account or you just like visiting to keep up with this project. If you have an account and you post frequently, congratulations, you are a media creator.
2.) Facebook live- if you’ve noticed on the mobile facebook app, you can now go live with a video. This provides a whole different way of bringing media to a different level. If you see something important happening in your community or you want to show people something, this is a good way to do it. One of my facebook friends livestreamed the beginning of the DNCE concert last Friday so those who couldn’t be there could watch their opening number.
The rest of the ways are under the cut
3.) Twitter/ periscope- Twitter also allows you to go live to show things that are happening. I’m not really sure on what livestreaming on twitter is because none of my followers/people I’m following livestream. My favorite band/singer uses periscope to livestream some of his stuff though, It’s quite incredible to be able to see a concert from the lead singers prospective and to be able to see backstage of a concert.
4.) Instagram- Instagram allows users to post to their “stories” and you are able to make a live video on their story. I’ve seen this done. Last Friday was the best example for it because I saw like 5 live videos from the DNCE concert. A lot of artists also use it to show their followers love. Brendon Urie from Panic! at the Disco used to do a lot of live videos because his followers (including me) would love to hear him sing.
5.) Snapchat- snapchat created the whole “story” thing. Snapchat is known for getting things to the point. sending a 10 second picture or video to a person, or a group of people. that picture will disappear after the time chosen. (which has proven to be a lie, because once something is out there on the internet, is it really gone?)
Being opened minded while looking for sources and information is so important. You have to be open minded or you will only get one side of the story, which is never good. Always look for a variety of sources. Having links to the same webpage could quite possibly make people mad and it’ll get boring after awhile. Being open minded while searching media is probably the best thing that you can do.
