My youngest brother-in-law: hey I've been wanting to come over but [Jpop] doesn't answer my calls--

Me: well he doesn't answer ANYONE--

BIL: and the last time I called you yelled at me

Me: well i was busy and i had texted you that but you still called. I'm sorry if I yelled but I HATE getting unapproved/unexpected phone calls. It's a pavlovian response. Not just cuz they're unexpected but because they interrupt what I'm doing AND because I hate when it rings through my earbud which I'm inevitably wearing. [Said a bit louder than strictly necessary in hopes my MIL will also take a fuckin hint]

[Jpop walks in]

BIL: Oh hey i know you don't answer calls cuz you expect someone to be asking for you to work on their cars and i know you're off now and don't want to come here to do free work...

...but will you come look at my car door??

This. This is why I can't and will no longer try to convince him to answer anyone's calls. That's all y'all call him about and it is TIRED. He was in the house for like 65 goddamn seconds before being asked to work on a vehicle IN THE STREET, IN THE DARK, IN THE COLD, ON A SATURDAY AFTER WORKING A 6-DAY WEEK.

Me: “As you can see there is a bulge in your brake line.”

Customer: “So what does that mean?”

Me: “If you don’t get it fixed, it will eventually burst and you could lose your brakes entirely.”

Customer: “Yeah…I’m just not seeing that as a possibility.”

Me: “Ma'am, not only is it a possibility, it is going to happen if it is not replaced.”

Customer: “I just don’t see how that would happen.”

In my head: Ya know what? You’re probably right. Why would I know something like that? I can tell by your well manicured hands and the current state of your vehicle that you are clearly a better judge of your vehicles safety than me.

Customer: “I’m driving back to Dallas this week anyways so I’ll just have my dad look at it.”
