Shepard was born in the new millennial/older gen z cohort equivalent of the mass effect timeline. They were born just when humanity was being integrated to the galactic community, when alien technologies’ and culture was starting to incorporate into human society. Anderson and Hackett still fought wars with bullets instead of thermo magazines, with ships, tech and knowledge just barely dusted off from the Mars archives.
And so, even when fighting the most advanced species ever known in the galaxy, they still remember the days in their childhood when humans were still curious and wary of the larger world, when space travel was made for vanguards and adventurers, when they still used the rudimentary machines of the old world.
Maybe they reminiscence with Kaiden, Ashley, Cortez or Miranda about the times were omnitools were gadgets used by the wealthy, or when extranet wasn’t a thing yet. They lived in a time where everything was new and the next decade it was not; they adapted, yes, but can never fully make these changes their own, it doesn’t come as naturally as the new gen.
Ugh it took 5ever but here's Dari and their surrogate dad, Dr. Dominic Shepard (also Dr. Chakwas' v amicable ex)
Dari at 18-19 went through a short hair phase and also was very awkward around cameras
Dominic tries to help them make friends so they'd have connections but it's like pulling teeth so he just helps them network by introducing them to any powerful person he knows (which means they're often his plus one to events in the Alliance)
