see like 90% of the time I fall off a series when there’s an extended flashback but mdzs is like half flashback and gripped me by the throat the entire time and I think it’s because the flashbacks were context for the relationship (and contradicting wwx’s biases) (lol), like there was context for politics and worldbuilding but it was done mostly with the relationship as a focal point… meanwhile with uncanny charm there was a flashback with the brother and his little brother and the underworld guy which is all tangentially related to the main character but that was like. 7+ weeks without the mc + li like if I’m reading a romance I’m reading it for the romance. and I need to get back into legend of the fox bead which had like, I dunno, 6 weeks of li backstory but it’s not context I particularly care about because it’s primarily relationship context with the li + someone from the past, which does give an idea for why the li is who she is and also why she’s a spirit, but if I’m honest, I don’t particularly care. I think mdzs did it best because it’s very frustrating for the reader but still pulls you in, it’s a good balance of tension + momentum and it’s all relevant. a while ago a pal told me ‘yeah a lot of people hated the novel’s structure’ & I was like ‘????? tasteless. enjoy the hostile puzzle feeder of mxtx’s narrative.’
Although ‘to be wherever the chaos is’ was praised by many, the only person who really followed this was Lan WangJi, the one beside him right now.
lan wangji's arc rlly is so lovely☹️☹️☹️ i think the most beautiful thing you can possibly do in your grief for someone else is to correct where you failed them and improve the world in their image and thats what he did. he raised lan sizhui as an extension of what wei wuxian built in the burial mounds he earns the trust and affections of the juniors through his actions and then in wei wuxian's second life he is steadfast in his devotion to him against the rest of the cultivation world which is where he failed him before. in wei wuxian's first life, all of lan wangji's attempts to protect him are in spite of wei wuxian's own agency — he wants to bring wei wuxian back to gusu to save him from himself and though he defends him to the other clans he doesn't condemn their ongoing persecution of wei wuxian and the wen refugees in any meaningful way even after visiting the burial mounds himself — like he literally asks for lan wangji to provide a path where he can protect those he cares for and still participate in his world but he cant because he knows that the two r fundamentally incompatible and still leaves wei wuxian and returns to those oppressive structures anyway. and yes of course in part during his second life lan wangji has missed him and loves him and therefore genuinely wants his company and to protect him but also the experience of having known and loved and failed wei wuxian in his first life has clearly changed him soooo radically even without the allure of personal gain
Lan WangJi’s brows sunk low as he shook his head. A few moments later, he replied in a low voice, “Brother, I want to take someone back to the Cloud Recesses.” Lan XiChen was surprised, “Take someone back to the Cloud Recesses?” Lan WangJi nodded, his expression pensive. After a pause, he continued, “Take him back… and hide him somewhere.” Lan XiChen’s eyes immediately widened. Ever since their mother passed away, this brother of his had gradually become more and more withdrawn. Apart from going on night-hunts, he’d shut himself in his room all day long, reading, meditating, practicing calligraphy, playing his guqin, and improving his cultivation. He never talked much to anyone except for him, his elder brother. Yet, this was the first time that such words found their way outside of his lips. Lan XiChen, “Hide him somewhere?” Lan WangJi frowned softly. He began again, “But he is not willing.”
this is so sad he picked the worlds most independent omega to want to atticwife ☹️☹️
Lan WangJi, clothed in white and carrying Bichen on his back, stood frozen amid the crowd’s encirclement. He even seemed somewhat at a loss. When he took another look, Wei WuXian laughed so hard that he almost tripped over himself. A little kid sat collapsed before Lan WangJi’s feet, bawling his eyes out. Lan WangJi could neither stay nor leave, neither reach out nor talk to him. With a serious expression on his face, he seemed to be thinking about what to do. One of the passerbys spoke up, nibbling on melon seeds, “What’s happenin’ here? The young’un cried so hard it scared me to death.” Someone commented assuredly, “He was definitely scolded by his dad.” Hiding in the crowd as he heard the words ‘his dad’, Wei WuXian almost exploded with laughter. Lan WangJi immediately looked up, denying it, “I am not.” Wen Yuan didn’t know what the people were talking about. When children were scared, they always called out to those they were close to. And so, sobbing, he called, “Dad! Dad…” A passerby spoke up at once, “Listen! Told you he’s his dad!”
[...]
With such a rhetorical question, Lan WangJi was surprisingly at a lost for words. He glared at him for a long while before he turned to Wen Yuan. Due to his stare, Wen Yuan started shaking again. A moment later, Lan WangJi asked Wen Yuan, “Which one… do you want?” Wen Yuan hadn’t understood what was going on yet. Lan WangJi pointed at the things in the vendor’s baskets, “Of the things here, which one do you want?” Wen Yuan stared at him in terror. He didn’t even dare let out a single breath. An hour later, Wen Yuan finally stopped crying. He kept on feeling his pockets, stuffed full of the playthings that Lan WangJi bought for him. Seeing that his tears finally stopped, Lan WangJi seemed to be relieved. Yet, with a blushing face, Wen Yuan snuck over quietly and wrapped his arms around his leg. Looking down, Lan WangJi saw the extra object on his leg, “…” Wei WuXian laughed madly, “Hahahahaha! Lan Zhan, congratulations! He’s taken a liking to you! He hugs the leg of whoever he likes, and he never lets go.”

head in hands. I always get family terms of address confused and I was trying to remember whether to use 舅舅 or 叔叔 to wish uncle a happy bday and you know how I remembered. you know what actually got my brain to connect the dots. was remembering oh jin ling uses 舅舅 for jiang cheng who is his mother’s brother. thanks mxtx for making mdzs a story about uncles.
