From the Fall Prompt List, will you please do sitting by a bonfire with mc!Nick x reader? Love this au and couple.
The crackling fire sent tiny embers into the darkening sky and as the temperature began to drop you cuddled closer into Nickâs side. His kutte was body warm and buttery under your ear and within a moment a blanket was being offered to you by one of the prospects. You caught the quick head jerk from Nick as you straightened up and his eyes shifted from the prospect to you as he unfolded the blanket and wrapped it loosely around your shoulders.
âThis is nice,â you murmured, almost afraid to speak the words aloud. It felt like if you gave words to how nice this was then something would come crashing in and ruin the moment.
âYeah. We used to do this more. BeforeâŠâ Nickâs voice trailed off, but you filled in the blanks mentally yourself. Before. âItâs something we need to get back to. At the end of the day, this club is about family, loyalty, protection.â
âWhat, you donât think parties at the club house invoke the same feeling?â you teased a little. He shifted his arm around you and squeezed slightly in retaliation, pulling a giggle from you.
âThis is a little more family friendly, at the very least,â he replied in a dry tone.
There were some kids around, running around the clearing and playing what appeared to be an elaborate game of tag. Someone else had pulled out a guitar and was strumming a never ending song full of notes that danced as much as the flames. You hadnât known what to expect when Nick told you the club was holding a bonfire on Friday, but this exceeded even your wildest half thought. It was warm and familial, loud of course, but none of the typical sloppiness that leaked from a night in the club house on a weekend. Or a weekday, to be honest, depending on what was going on at the time.
âDid you do a lot of these growing up, too?â
âOnce a month when Samuel was president,â Nick answered quietly. He shifted again and you regretted saying anything. Samuel was still a sore point.
âNext time weâll have to bring marshmallows,â you said lightly.
At that Nick chuckled and you could hear the sound of his beard on leather as he shook his head.
âDonât know about all that, my love. We are still a motorcycle club.â
âMotorcycle clubs donât like sâmores?â
âIâll get you a bag and we can roast some at the house,â he promised in lieu of answering.
You pouted a little and he tilted your chin up for a kiss.
âIâll even spring for the fancy graham crackers.â
âAnd the fancy chocolate,â you added immediately with a smile and another kiss.
Can you do - "shh, it's ok. It was just a dream" with mc!Nick x Reader A, please?
if you head to the mc!au masterlist with nick, this comes relatively early on between âclub businessâ and âbecoming his old lady.â figured we could use a bit more of what they were like before all of the shit hit the fan, eh?
-------
You cried out and jerked, tumbling between slumber and wakefulness abruptly with a gasp as you half sat up in the bed. The first thing you noticed was the darkness of the room and your heart continued to hammer as the vestiges of the nightmare clung onto you. You squeezed your eyes shut tightly and propped yourself up in with one arm. With your free hand you scrubbed over your face and concentrated on your breathing and the sounds of the house. It was the middle of the night, but you could still make out the hum of the air conditioner and the sound of crickets outside the window. They helped ground you back to reality and you slowed your breathing incrementally.
âHey.â
The word was spoken quietly and gently, but you startled and gasped again, pulling away from Nickâs hand instinctively before you allowed yourself to relax into his grip. His touch on your arm was hesitant and he made to back off, but you sagged into him before he could.
âSorry,â you whispered. You cleared your throat and shook your head at yourself. His skin was warm under your forehead and you used that to ground you even further.
âShh, itâs okay,â Nick soothed as he brought his hand back up to his arm. He began a slow sweep up you arm and then down your back. âIt was just a dream.â
âNightmare,â you mumbled into his chest.
Youâd been having it more frequently. It was difficult to remember the substance of it, but you knew it had something to do with Nick being injured. Him being shot had sent you into a tailspin of realization how real all of this club stuff was. It wasnât just loud bikes and leather and Lawrence being a dick, what Nick was involved inâleadâwas dangerous. Part of that reality check made you want to pull away and the other part had you clinging on for dear life.
âWant to talk about it?â He continued in his steady sweeps along your skin. âAlways makes me feel better, the times I talk about it.â
You sucked in a shaky breath and exhaled slowly. âItâs about you.â Nick stiffened under you and you pushed him back into the bed in order for you to lay across his chest. He wrapped his arms around you tentatively and he wrapped your own around him in a tight grip. âAbout you getting hurt.â
He hummed, but didnât say anything at first.
âIâm not going anywhere, princesa,â he settled on finally.
You made a disgruntled noise and picked your head up to try to look him in the eye. He was looking down at you steadily, no hint of concern or uncertainty in his expression.
âI donât want to lose you.â Your voice cracked and you bit your lip hard. Nick brought up a hand to your face and dragged his thumb across your cheek. âOkay? Justâtake care of yourself, please. For me?â
He drew you closer to his face and pressed a kiss to your forehead. His stubble scratched across your skin and you screwed your face up a little in the hint of a smile.
âI will. Donât have plans for going anywhere,â he reassured you quietly. âCome on, go back to sleep. Promise Iâll be here when you wake up.â
You pulled back to look at him again.
âPromise?â
You squirmed up for a proper kiss and he framed your face as he brought his lips to yours.
âPromise.â Another kiss. âIâll even make you breakfast in the morning.â
âWaffles?â you asked with a tile of your head and another smile.
âWaffles, eggs, bacon.â He punctuated each item with a kiss. âLay back down and let me hold you until you go to sleep. Sweet dreams only and then breakfast in bed when you wake up. Iâll take care of you.â He tugged you down into a sleeping position and wrapped his arms around you. Another kiss dropped to the top of your head before he adjusted the sheets around you. âI promise.â
Will you do "Honey, there is no right way" or "I will not ask and neither should you" from the Hozier prompt list, whichever works better, for mc!Nick x Reader please? I need to know more about their break after the trauma Reader A experienced. The assault and aftermath of being afraid to be around Nick was so raw and heartbreaking, but so well written.
thank you! this goesâŠnowhere, but it does layer on the angst, so thereâs that?
âââ
The two of you were wrapped up in conversation. Thatâs the only reason you startled when suddenly a deep voice was calling your name and reaching for you. The basket swinging in your hand flew up as you flinched back and you watched a bag of lettuce fall to the ground with a crunch of plastic on linoleum. Veronica cut her sentence off and reached for you slowly, but you shook her off and pasted a smile on your face.
âNick.â He was bent over to pick up your bag of salad and he offered it to you, movements slow and measured like you were a predator and he was the prey. It almost made you want to laugh. âSorry,â you took the bag from him as your smile melted into something more genuine and grateful, âdidnât see you.â
He waved away your apology and offered you a small smile. It was awkward for a moment that stretched uncomfortably under the fluorescent lighting.
âMy fault.â He cleared his throat and gestured to himself and Razor with a rueful smile. âWe got sick of junk.â
That explained the grocery shopping, kinda. It was a bit weird that they were shopping for themselves rather than making a prospect or craneas do it. Even more strange was the fact that they had nothing in their hands other than a bag of chips you recognized from the end cap of the aisle you and Veronica were currently on, but you decided to let that thought go. If you held onto the reason they may have spotted Veronicaâs car in the parking lot and decided on a whim to check up on the two of you, the reason everything was strained and weird and stilted, the reason you flinched so hard you nearly upended your basket of groceries at a voice that was more than familiar, you were afraid your carefully maintained equilibrium would be upended. The darkness lurking at the edges of the box you had shoved deep inside of you had a lot more to upend than a bag of salad.
âNot me,â Razor finally chimed in.
His grin was the same, wide and slightly mischievous, but you didnât miss how his eyes kept sliding over Veronicaâs face desperately. They were also doing some kind of weird dance that you didnât have the space to try to figure out. Veronica swore they hadnât broken up, but youâd seen a less of Razor since you began staying with her and heard even less. More than that, Veronica seemed subdued and always lost into thought. The vibe in the apartment was like the walking dead, but you two did the best to pretend it wasnât as bad as it was. You were supposed to be doing some grocery shopping, junk food included, to have a movie night tonight. Neither of you had the energy or desire to leave the apartment for the usual Friday night antics at the club house.
âHere, let me get this.â When Razor reached for Veronicaâs basket she allowed him to take it easily enough, even though she protested audibly.
âI can carry my ownââ
âLet me carry it for you, hmm?â Razorâs eyes flickered over her face in that same desperate way and Veronica sighed. âI carry, you toss things in. The perfect team.â
She took a cautious step in his direction, looking over her shoulder at you. You nodded and shot her a faint smile. At the acknowledgement she bit her lip, hesitated, then turned and began walking in the direction the two of you had been on before being interrupted. Maybe they were still together, you thought as you watched Razorâs hand snake out and intertwine their fingers. You caught a glimpse of something on her face before they turned at the end of the aisle.
âSo, how are youââ
âHowâs theââ
The two of you laughed awkwardly and you shifted on your feet and gestured for him to go first.
âI donât know the right way to do this,â Nick admitted with another rueful look before he pulled at his kutte and dropped his gaze to his feet.
âHoney, there is no right way.â Your words were gentle, but you still watched as the line of his shoulders stiffened. The buzzing in your head intensified, or was that the fluorescent lights?
âI want you to come home,â Nick said quietly. He looked up from beneath his lashes. âPlease. I miss you. Itâs so empty, even with Razor staying over more often than not. I donât even know whatâs going on thereââ
âI wonât ask and neither should you.â
âBut, just say the word.â Nick took a step forward with a beseeching look on his face and you concentrated very hard on not pulling away. âIâll come get you and you can come home. You canâwe can stay in different rooms, but if youââ
âNick.â
He closed his mouth and pressed his lips together so hard they went white. The taste of bile grew in the back of your mouth as you watched his face fall and then his mask fall back into place. Nonchalant. Removed. He took a step back and nodded.
âIâll uhââ he scratched the back of his neck and squinted into the distance before jerking his head to the beginning of the aisle. âIâll be seeing you, okay? Justâjust take care of yourself. If you need anythingâŠâ
He lets his words trail off and when you nodded and closed the gap between the two of you, kissed you roughly on the forehead and then strode away.
anon requested:Â Can we get "I'm so in love with her, I don't know what to do" with mc!Nick talking about Reader A, please? They need some fluff after such a horrible event.
âWell youâre the one that answered the phoneâŠI already told you that it wasnât an emergencyâŠâ
You shifted in the bed, turning over and spreading your hand out against the under you to your side. The other side of the bed was empty, even though the familiar voice coming from somewhere else in the house told you as much. You resisted coming fully awake, settling on your side and curling towards Nickâs empty side of the bed. You let yourself drift.
âWho else do I have to call? Give me a break, Sonny.â
His voice was hushed, but it wafted down the hallway clearly in the otherwise quiet house. You felt your forehead wrinkle, but you still resisted alertness.
âShe was gone for so long. I didnât even know if she was going to come back. Six weeksâŠâ he paused and exhaled hard. âSix weeks is a long time.â
âYeah, well. I think itâs easier to stay gone when you leave. You going to tell me you guys have neverâŠ? Sheâs never left? Almost left? Even afterâŠâ
There was a long pause.
âShit. Iâm sorry. No, donât listen to me, Iâm all wrapped up in my head. We both know her, if your girl wanted to leave, youâd know. Pay me no mind, man.â
Another pause.
âIâm so in love with her, I donât know what to doâŠI think I made the right choices, the ones that keep her safe. Keep the club safe. Keep you safe. Butââ
âIâm not sure. Hopefully, not. There was a mention of a year, maybe seven months andâŠI mean, Iâm not eager to go to jail. If itâs what has to happen, thoughâŠâ
A pause. By now youâre fully eavesdropping, turning to your back and slowly letting your eyes flutter open.
âI think so? I know I said before that I didnât think she would, but after everything elseâŠshit. Sheâll probably welcome my absence.â
He chuckled darkly and you frowned and strained to hear better as your eyes slowly adjusted to the darkness of the room. There was only a sliver of pale moon in the sky tonight, a waning crescent, and it only barely brushed against the darkness of the room. Everything was a watery gray and it felt like you were existing between and outside reality.
âI know. Youâre right, itâs just tough. IâuhâŠâ
You pushed up to your hand, still groggy, but the most awake you would be at this hour.
âNick?â
You called out for him and then listened to him curse under his breath. There was a rustling coming from the living room and then a whisper before he responded.
âBe right there. Getting some water. Want anything?â
âNo. Just come back to bed.â
You fell back against the pillows and listened to him get up and walk into the kitchen. The refrigerator door opened and closed and then another door opened before you heard the gentle tinkling of glass against ice. A few moments later you heard the sound of the tap running and then it was another few seconds before you heard his steps begin towards the bedroom. It was a gentle slap of his soles on the hardwood, house creaking in places as he walked over certain floorboards.Â
They got louder the closer he got before pausing at the door. You allowed your head to turn over on the pillow to face his direction. In the darkness his expression was undecipherable. You made a small noise and he entered in completely. He climbed into the bed and set the glass down on his bedside table with a muffled noise after first raising it in your direction as offering. You shook your head no and noted how his usually very neat nightstand was now stacked with papers and a notebook. It was a habit heâd started recently, maybe influenced by Razor or even Sonny, and although you were curious as to what was inside of it, you resisted the urge to snoop. Heâd tell you what, and when, he was ready.
âYâokay?â you slurred, already partially back asleep.
You snugged your body up close to his and threw an arm around his bare waist. He was breathing shallowly under your cheek and you turned slightly to press a kiss to the closest bit of him that you could reach before you let your cheek resume itâs position. Nick exhaled shakily, but when you reach up a hand to press first to his cheek and then thumb across his cheekbone the skin was dry.
âFine,â he rasped finally. âJustâŠthinking.â
You thought back to when youâd first returned back to his houseâhomeânearly a week ago. The expression on his face when he had unlocked the door was blank and for a moment you wondered if youâd made a huge mistake. Your grip on your keyring had tightened, keys digging into the skin after youâd gotten them out automatically and then decided to knock instead.Â
It was after a moment of you shifting your weight uncomfortably from foot to foot, suitcase beside you in a physical weighted reminder of the metaphorical weight in the gaping distance between you, that heâd roused himself. He had taken a step forward and then back, which pinged something weird in your mind that made you want to smile or throw up, as the shock bled onto his expression. He reached out and snagged your suitcase and pulled it over the threshold with a jerk of his head in your direction. You were barely through the door before he pulled you into his embrace and you were grateful. He smelled like leather and spicy aftershave and you buried your face in his collar, drinking him up. âHelloâ had seemed too trite, âIâm sorryâ was untrue and âI love youâ seemed out of place. Saying âIâm homeâ had seemed too juvenile, this was not a teen soapy drama, so you settled on keeping your mouth shut a little longer.
The memory faded as he spoke again.
âIâm just so happy that youâre home.â

anon requested:Â âI canât do this without you.â With M.C.! Sonny please :)
this is Sonnyâs perspective of the phone call he has with Nick in this fill
âAre you kidding? Do you know what time it is?â
Sonny felt barely awake as he half stumbled into the living room. He only narrowly missed running into the coffee table despite the fact that it had been in the same place for years.
âYeah, well, I didnât know that you were really going to take me staying on the line as consent to prattle on and on,â he said reproachfully.Â
He sat down and shifted on the couch with irritation. It was a cool night, not cold enough for them to need the heat on, but cold enough that he was getting chilly sitting on the couch. He huffed and grabbed the throw blanket off the back of the couch, settling in when it became apparent that the was going to be on the phone for a moment.
Nick spinning himself into circles over things that were resolved wasnât new, but he had forgotten how much he tended to fixate. Losing touch with Nick over the years meant that the people they were now was worlds away from who they used to be. For a lot of different reasons. Still, every once in awhile someone would feel so achingly familiar that Sonny would feel like high school was just yesterday rather than over a decade ago.
âYeahâŠitâs a long time. She came back, though,â Sonny reminded him as gently as he could.
Sonny sat up straighter and a frown creased his brows.
âNever what? Left? No, sheâs never left. What the hell are you talking about? Why would you say that? Why would you bring that up?â
Sonny was aware that his voice was raising with each word, his body taut and grip on his phone tightened. His heart was racing in his chest and as the wind whistled around the house he felt an ominous weight.
âPay you noâwhy would you even say that, Nick, huh?â Sonny raked a hand through his hair roughly. âLook, I know youâre hurting, but that was low. Even for you.â
A pause.
âDoes that mean jail time?â he asked.
Another pause.
He sank back into the couch and scrubbed the same hand over his face now. Truth was, he was worn out. He was tired of putting out fires and reassuring people and being the bigger person. He needed a long vacation, far away from here with just his girl by his side. He needed peace.
âYou have to do what you need to do to keep your club safe and to keep your girl safe. You have to take it on the chin,â Sonny reminded Nick wearily. âDo you think sheâll stick around through that?â
He waited for Nickâs response, then cut him off. âWe both know thatâs not true.â
Sonny got to his feet suddenly, trying to interrupt his thoughts and avoid spiraling. The longer he sat on the couch by himself just thinking of nightmare scenarios, the worse it would get. He let the blanket fall back to the couch carelessly, took a step away, before sighing and grasping it. He made quick work of hastily folding it and dropping it back over the arm of the couch before turning on his heel and heading back to the bedroom. Even the floors were cool and he hurried to get back into his warm bed sooner.
He was careful with his movements when he reentered the bedroom and he took care to walk lightly. When he got to the bed he grasped the edge of the comforter and sheet and began peeling it back with care. He held his breath and had just gotten under the covers with a triumphant feeling before jumping out of his skin a moment later when she brushed up against him deliberately.
âWhatâre you doing?â Her voice was thick like honey with sleep.
When he looked over, her eyes were still closed, but there was an alertness to her face. In addition to the crease between her eyebrows the skin around her eyes had tightened. She screwed up her face dramatically as she wrapped an arm around him and pressed her face to his shoulder. There was a faint press of warm lips on cool skin and he felt a spread of warmth that radiated from that point outwards.
âNothing. Go back to sleep,â Sonny whispered.
She snuffled and rubbed her face against his shoulder harder.
âTry again.â She spoke clearly this time.
He sighed and slid further down into the sheets, arranging his limbs and hers so that he could pull her into him properly.
âNick.â
He knew he didnât need to add anymore explanation. She hummed her understanding and he felt her body relax into his. He knew he should let her sleep, but he searched out her mouth to press a firm kiss to her lips. She breathed into the kiss and let him take the lead; he had to take special care to not devour her. He was suddenly voracious for every bit of her. Not even in a sexual way, just as a reassurance that she was here and solid and his.
âHave you ever wanted to leave me? Seriously? Not just, like, after fight or somethingâŠbut honestly end things?â His words were low and muffled, spoken against her forehead.
He felt her tense as sleep was momentarily forgotten and he squeezed his eyes shut. Now was really not the time for this. He should let her sleep. Sheâd be there in the morning and no doubt in the light of day this conversation would seem ridiculous.
âWhere is thisâno.âÂ
She paused and backtracked.Â
âWellâŠmostly no. Iâd be lying if I said the thought had never passed my mind. There have been a time or two when Iâve thought about it.â
Sonnyâs stomach churned and he grimaced at her words.
âButâŠyâknow. Iâm not going anywhere. Weâre getting married in two months,â she reminded him.
He smiled faintly.
âYeah, I know. Just, if you everââ he found himself choking up and he had to clear his throat before going on. âThereâs still time for you to change your mind. I canât do this without you, but Iâd never want you to feel trapped.â
It hurt to push the words out, but they were the truth. He never wanted her to feel trapped with him, trapped in this life or all that came with it. There was no way he could imagine doing half of what he did without herâbeing the MC president, running the parlorâbut it would be worse if she stayed and resented him. Heâd rather get shot again than imagine enduring the pain of that slow decay.
She leaned up to kiss him, pulling him out of his reverie. âNot going anywhere,â she breathed into his mouth. âGo to sleep. Iâll be here in the morning. And the morning after thatâŠand the morning after thatâŠand the morningâŠâ
yay, this is so fun! so, I thought I'd give you the director's commentary of the below snippet from the first chronological fill of the mc!au with Sonny. happy to do this for another au or anything else I've ever written, though! it's fun thinking about the behind the scenes because these stories really live inside of my head. I also have another request for another director's commentary of the mc!au, but I have to write the next mc!Sonny installment first, because that's what I want to do commentary on.
You turned with an incredulous look on your face as Nick lunged. Sonny just barely got his arms around him in time to prevent the fight from breaking out as Griffin laughed nastily.
âFuck you! You donât know shit about my family,â Nick shouted as he strained against Sonnyâs hold. Sonny was refusing to let go and he said something to Nick that you couldnât hear which got Nick to calm down a little.
âHeâs not worth it,â Sonny sneered in Griffinâs direction. Nick shook Sonny off and readjusted his  clothes as you looked on tensely.
This part makes me sad that Sonny and Nick ended up in different motorcycle clubs. I had to show how close their relationship was, to develop proper tension within the AU, but I've always felt like Sonny and Nick just belonged together in some way in every universe. Whether as friends, partners, or more, I think they're fun characters to pair together. Sonny as the protective one and one to defuse Nick's anger now and then Sonny as the one who is so angry with Nick when they get older. Oof. Pulls at my heart.
âAww, look at this. How touching. Baby Dominick is here to stop you from getting in over your head. You really donât fight any of your own battles, do you?â Griffin taunted and just then you rushed by the boys and threw your drink in his face.
He stepped back with an indignant bellow and you went to lunge for him. Nick caught you around the middle and you fought against his hold.
âYou dumb jock! I could kick your ass with my hands tied behind my back!â you screamed. âStupid asshole. Get some fucking friends of your own or are you miserable because you know no one likes you!?â you hurled in his direction and your hand swept out to the counter to your left to pick up a bottle.
Nick grabbed your hand and folded it into your body, picking you up off the floor as you kicked your legs at Griffin in rage.
âDumb bitch,â Griffin spluttered as he wiped tequila out of his eyes. âYouâre luââ
Nick as the one to try to stop you instead of Sonny to show the closeness of your relationship with Nick...Oof again. There's a reason Sonny's old lady asked Nick to walk her down the aisle. It's the same reason she was reluctant to pursue a relationship with Sonny. She really relies on and appreciates her friendship with Nick and she didn't want to lose it (Oof again, I know), even as much as she had a huge crush on Sonny. Sonny's old lady has always been the more practical one when it comes to the big picture, which shouldn't come as a surprise to you if you've read this AU!
Before he could finish his sentence Sonny punched him in the face. Nick groaned and hastily set you aside and went over to pull off Sonny as he yelled at Griffin.
âWanna call my girlâfriends name!? See how you like this you dumb asshole, I swear to God Iâllââ he shouted in between punches.
Nick got his arms around Sonnyâs waist and went to pull him away, but Sonny slipped his grip and kicked Griffin where he was on the floor.
âGet up youââ
âSonny, stop! Stop. Sonny come on! Stop!â Nick was yelling over him as he tried to haul him away again.
You rushed over to help him, pushing Sonny away before he could seriously injure Griffin.
âStop!â you told him and Sonny stopped struggling and spat on the ground by Griffin before shrugging roughly out of Nickâs grip and making a beeline out of the kitchen.
When the reader told Sonny to stop trying to fight Griffin, he listened...That little slip of the tongue? The way he was done with the fight until Griffin had something to say about the reader...? yeAh, he's already in deep.
When the three of you hit the front door you sighed. You took a look at them both and laughed a little which Sonny rolled his eyes to before chuckling a little himself. Nick looked at the both of you like you were crazy as he walked along next to you and tugged at his shirt.
One of Nick's tells is that he fidgets with his clothing when he's upset.
âUm, that was more eventful than I thought it would be,â you admitted around a giggle and Sonny slapped his thigh as he broke off into more peals of laughter. Nick still wasnât laughing and you threw your arms around his shoulders in a sideways hug. âCome on, Nicky. Gotta admit it was a little funny. All three of us trying to kick his ass.â
These three. đ Nick was definitely feeling some kind of way, and well justified in that!, and I wanted to show how - already - Sonny and the reader are so similar in some ways. Those two laughing about trying to kick someone's ass on Nick's behalf is honestly a pretty good summary of their relationship, although I write a ton of angst. The basis for their relationship is being fiercely protective of the people they love and a bit of mischievousness.
I hope you enjoyed this director's commentary. đ

The dull sound of glass on wood echoed from the cabinet as you placed another glass on the shelf. Although the dishes were dry, they were still slightly warm as you unloaded them from the dishwasher. Boring tasks like this one kept your hands busy and kept you feeling productive. When you stopped moving, no task to complete to occupy your mind, dark memories swirled and grasped at you. Deliberately, you grabbed another glass from the dishwasher and turned to face the cabinet.
Footsteps whispered against the carpet in the living room and you tensed before forcing yourself to relax. You were happy to be back at Nickâs, butâŠEverything was still a mess. Or at least, you were still a mess. Six weeks at Veronicaâs had been enough time to know that this is where you wanted to be, but everything else was still up in the air. Nick was tense. You were tense. The club was tense. Work felt harder than it ever had been. You wanted to get back to a peace that youâre not sure had ever really existed.
âMorning,â Nick greeted in a murmur from behind you.Â
Even with hearing him pad through the living room, it took a concerted effort on your part to not flinch. A glance over your shoulder at where he stood just in the doorway of the kitchen had you sweeping a glance over his bare chest and hastily pulled on sweatpants. They sagged around his hips and you offered him a small smile.
âMorning,â you replied in what you hoped passed for a light voice.
âHowâd youââ
âYouâre up eaââ
You both paused and this time your smile was wider and more relaxed when you glanced back at him over your shoulder, one hand grasping a mug on the top rack of the dishwasher.Â
âYou donât have to hop straight out of bed and start doing chores,â Nick chided somewhat jokingly. âThe dishes arenât going anywhere.â
âHard for me to sit still these days,â you muttered with a half shrug as you concentrated on placing the mugs in the cabinet with the handles facing out. âAnd one less thing to do after work.â
Nick hummed and you werenât sure if it was in agreement or just acknowledgment. Ever since youâd been back, heâd been careful around you. Part of you wanted to tell him that he didnât have to be, but the other part of you was relieved that he was giving you a bit of space. You wanted to be here, butâŠeverything was still a mess. You sighed internally and bent down to grasp the last glass from the top rack in one hand, pushing it in to move onto the dishes in the bottom of the dishwasher.
A hand brushed your elbow and you startled hard. Try as you might, your grasp on the glass fumbled and it stuttered out of your hand as you whirled around in surprise. The shatter was quiet in actuality, but you and Nick both flinched as if someone had shot a gun in the room. Glass sprayed across the linoleum and you clenched your trembling traitorous hand and shoved it behind your back.
âIâm so sorry,â you rushed to say in a high-pitched voice just as Nick cursed.
âShit!â He threw up his hands to caution you against moving. âSorry, my love,â he apologized for cursing. âI didnât mean to startle you. Iââ he cut himself off and then slowly let his fingers come to rest on your shoulders.
â-thought you knew I was there since you saw me right behind you,â you finished in your head. He was too kind, or too something else, to say it.
âStay right here. Iâll put my boots on and then we can get you out of harmâs way before I sweep.â
âIâm so sorry, Nick,â you apologized again as you met his eyes. There was something soft and full of regret in his gaze, so you dropped your eyes to the shattered glass instead. âI can replace it.â
Nick shook his head and with another warning look turned and took large careful steps towards the front door.
âI got it from a thrift store,â he called from the other room, just out of sight. Heavy boots thudded on the ground one after another. âWe have plenty of glasses.â
We.
âNow, letâs get you to safety.âÂ
He returned to the doorway of the kitchen with his boots on and a forced grin. You twisted trembling fingers behind your back and dropped your gaze from his mouth to the floor again. At least it had dropped on the floor instead of in the dishwasher. That would have been a pain in the ass to clean. Heavy boots came into view slowly and you let yourself trace his feet up to his shoulders. Your heart was thundering in your chest and you thought it was strange that you had just now noticed.
Nick opened his arms towards you slowly and you made yourself keep still, muscles locked against another involuntary flinch. Damn this kitchen. Damn that glass. Damn your brain and itâs penchant for not understanding when you were and you werenât in danger. He crouched slightly and locked his arms in the middle of your thighs in a firm grip. With two steps he was across the room in an area of the floor not dotted with glass, but he still set you to sit on the counter rather than the floor.
âIâll get this swept up and then what do you say we go out for breakfast?â Nick suggested lightly.
He was already turning to grab the broom next to the fridge and you concentrated on the tinkling of glass as he swept the shards into a neat glimmering pile. When you didnât reply, his motions slowed, and this time when he looked up you met his gaze.
âIâm sorry for scaring you,â Nick said in a tone that was heavy and somber.Â
He wasnât just apologizing for right now. Maybe wasnât apologizing for right now at all.
âItâsââ he cut himself off with a frustrated noise. âA long overdue apology,â he continued lowly. Glass crunched under his feet as he shifted his weight. âI am so, so sorry.â
You shrugged and then nodded, tucking your bottom lip into your mouth and blinking quickly at the tears that had welled up against your permission.Â
âI know,â you breathed, barely audible over the hum of the refrigerator.
âI would never, ever, put my hands on you in anger,â Nick said fiercely. âEver. I shouldnât have lost my temper like that.â
Your stomach was in knots, but you summoned the courage to give voice to the thoughts bouncing around your head. It was about time.Â
âYou really scared me,â you confessed in a small voice. Tears slipped down your face and you brushed them away inelegantly with the back of your hand. âI was just trying to look after you.â
âI know,â Nick breathed. He sagged and leaned heavily against the broom handle. âI know. It wasnât anything you did. It was me. It was ââ he bit back the words he clearly wanted to let spill out. Changed courses. âIt was beyond out of line and Iâm so, so sorry, sweetheart.â
You studied him silently as you chewed on the inside of your cheek. He nodded as if to himself and turned back to the broom.
