I didn’t even hear him coming.
Jesse’s voice was like silk and shadow all at once. Smooth. Sharp. And then—his fangs were in my neck before I could scream. It burned. Like fire in my veins, searing through my skin and bone. I remember Benny yelling my name. I think he tried to fight Jesse off. I think I collapsed.
Then, nothing.
When I woke up, I was lying on a couch I didn’t recognize. Benny’s basement. His hoodie was wrapped around me, and his hands were gripping mine like a lifeline.
“You’re awake,” he breathed, his voice hoarse. “Oh my god, you’re awake.”
My throat felt like sandpaper. My head throbbed. Everything was too loud—the ticking of the clock, the creaking pipes, even Benny’s panicked heartbeat.
“What happened?” I rasped.
His face broke. “Jesse. He bit you. You’re… turning.”
I sat up too fast and dizziness hit me like a truck. “No. No, no, Benny—”
“We’re going to fix this,” he said immediately. “Sarah’s on her way. Ethan’s digging through the spellbooks. I’m not—I’m not letting you become one of them.”
But we couldn’t stop it.
Sarah tried everything she knew. Ethan even called Rory, who was completely useless but really wanted to help. Benny barely left my side. He researched late into the night, his notes sprawled everywhere. He looked tired. Pale. He kept pretending he was okay, but every time he looked at me, I saw that flicker of fear in his eyes.
I was losing control.
Sometimes I’d just… stare at someone and hear their heartbeat. Their blood rushing. I couldn’t sleep. I couldn’t eat. I could barely touch Benny without wanting to tear into him.
And still, he stayed.
“I don’t want to hurt you,” I whispered one night, curled up in the corner of his room with shaking hands.
“You won’t,” he said softly, kneeling in front of me. “You’re not like Jesse. You’re not like any of them.”
“You don’t know that.”
“I know you.”
The night I completed the transition, I could feel it—down to my bones. Something in me snapped. The thirst bloomed into a full, agonizing ache, and my heart… stopped.
Literally.
I sat up with a gasp, my lungs dragging in air I didn’t need. The room looked different—sharper, brighter, like I’d put on glasses for the first time. I could hear people walking outside, their blood pulsing through their veins.
And Benny.
His scent. His warmth. The way he looked at me—shaking, terrified, but still here.
“It’s done,” I said quietly, staring down at my cold hands. “I’m not human anymore.”
He didn’t answer.
He just crossed the room and wrapped his arms around me. Tight. Like I was still the same girl I was before Jesse sank his fangs into me.
“You’re still you,” he whispered into my hair. “I don’t care what your heart says. Mine still beats for you.”
I choked on a sob. “Benny—”
“I’m not leaving. I meant what I said. Vampire or not, I’m not going anywhere.”
It wasn’t the ending I wanted.
But maybe it was the beginning of something else.
Because even if the blood moon had changed me forever…
Benny still looked at me like I was the only girl in the world.
And that?
That kept me human… just enough.
