When they come home, Hakkai goes visibly pale at the state of the house. There's black mold growing up three walls and the mattress is slimy and green. The bathroom floor has rotted out.
āWe can salvage it,ā Gojyo says even though he doesn't think there's anything to do except maybe burn this whole place down.
āOf course,ā Hakkai replies.
They sleep out on blankets saved from the journey that are still lousy with grit. He still sleeps like the dead, Hakkai curled against his back.
Except in the morning, Gojyo wakes up alone. For a moment, itās like it was when he was a kid, when he didn't have a place to stay and stole a blanket to keep warm at night.
But then the moment passes and he can hear Hakkai talking to Hakuryuu. Dawn is barely touching the sky, but the house is opened up and there are trash bags already piled outside the door.
Heās not surprised to see Hakkai scrubbing walls with a bucket and brush that werenāt there last night, but he is surprised to how much progress has been made while he slept. The main room is almost liveable again. Almost all the mold is gone.
Hakkai, however, is filthy, face smudged and shirt black. There are greasy stains across his knees, the lower parts of his pants wet with dirty water. Gojyo doesnāt even want to know how cleaning managed to tear the shoulder of Hakkaiās shirt.Ā
āDid you even sleep last night?ā he asks as he steps into the room and lights a cigarette.
Hakkai produces an ash tray like magic. āOf course.ā Itās a goddamned lie and they both know it. āI just wanted an early start.ā
He steps closer to Hakkai, to kiss him good morning, but Hakkai shies away, shaking his head. āIām filthy,ā he says, and for once, heās not talking about his soul or his past.
Gojyo snorts, close enough now that he knows some of the muck on Hakkaiās shirt has spread onto his singlet. He kisses Hakkaiās wrinkled nose, because he canāt say how much this feels like home now. Hell, he canāt even figure out how much he missed Hakkaiās manic cleaning when it was their house.
He loves Hakkai so much sometimes it feels like heās going to explode.
Hakkaiās nose brushes against his, and then Hakkai returns the nose kiss. āYou can start in the bedroom, I think,ā he says cheerfully. āBurn the mattress.ā
