I feel too many overlooked RWBY as an indie production. Both at the start and now.
Namely that Volume 1 and 2âs amateurish presentation shouldâve been expected, given it was Rooster Teethâs (an independent company ever with WB) first foray into full animation.
It wasnât like some big name studio which wouldâve been more generous about the budgeting and production staff members they could hire. This wasnât like Berserk 2016 where people who shouldâve known better shouldâve done better.
It was a small indie show that had the potential to grow along with the rag tag crew members who worked on it. And yet at the time, so many showed little patience for the animatorâs best foot forward and derided them as âunprofessionalâ when⌠they never said they were.
And perhaps it being on Crunchyroll has something to do with it as you had it streaming along with the big boys like Attack On Titan and SAO.
It certainly helped in casting a net for newer fans yet⌠I canât help but look at the hatedom and ponder if itâd be as rampant if it stayed strictly on Rooster Teeth or YouTube (though letâs not get hung up on that kerfuffle).
Like Iâve been looking into a lot of indie animation pilots from some that clearly had big backers vs those doing their best with at least animatics. I canât imagine any of those creative teams handling the sort of derision RWBY still gets for not being Studio Trigger tier or whatever.
And thatâs sad because itâs the sincerity and honesty of indie animation that makes me love it or at least respect those I couldnât vibe with. The poser animation of RWBY has this in droves and even with Maya, itâs still pretty scrappy.
I wish we collectively had more patience for indie animation that isnât Glitch tier or Spindlehorse tier (Vivziepop is polarizing but sheâs clearly onto something with her current success). Thatâs how we get stuff like RWBY to grow. By recognizing itâs smaller, more honest soul.
ParaNorman CGI test animation by David Richard Nelson
David Richard Nelson is a VFX artist and helped create the crowds in ParaNorman! Computer-generated assets have a rule in LAIKA films; They must look as similar to the real-life stop-motion puppets as possible as to not be obvious that they are CGI.

Animation reel 2025
Some animations that I did for university.
Recent 3D Assignment at Uni using Character Rigging in Maya, certainly not my favourite area of Animation but definitely worth the experience.
The outcome isnât really great, itâs quite noticeable how janky the Alien looking guyâs movement is along with his hand movement when raising the sword.
A lot to learn going forward in 3D, but I know I can improve upon this going forward learning from the basic Elementary errors.

give it a watch if you dont have anything more interesting to do ;D
A recent performance I finished up! I wanted to play around with squash and stretch with this one :)
I haven't posted any progress on my mouse here so it's time to fix it.
I would say that the project is half done. I managed to complete the modeling and rigging of the majority of assets and I even animated it and made a test render which you can check above. I am pretty happy with the result but there is still plenty of work ahead. Currently, I am working on polishing the animation and adding details. To be honest, I very rarely touch this project now, this year is too unstable and I have to move in/out a lot and this distracts me from art. But I still intend to finish the mouse animation as soon as possible.
I also would like to mention the reason why I started this animation. I had been a little lost in my art direction for several years, I liked drawing but 3d was definitely my passion too and I didn't know where to focus my energy. So, the main goal of this work was to work out which stages of work I liked the most so that I could concentrate on them more. I have already made plenty of helpful conclusions. For example, I have realized I definitely don't like retoping and rendering, but really like sculpting, concepting, and animating.
If you feel lost too, instead of trying to guess what you like I highly recommend going through the process and watching how you feel about that. It definitely helps to narrow your focus.
