I feel like with Sailor Moon's Anime being directed and screenwritten by a lot of men does show that male writers can writer women well. I mean, if Sato and Ikuhara can pull it off, you'd think more popular title from Shonen Jump wouldn't have much excuse by comparison.
The sheer existence of Kunihiko Ikuhara means that no other men have an excuse tbh. If a man can write and direct Revolutionary Girl Utena, nobody else can complain about writing women ever.

Loved your Korra review. Breath of fresh air. Though I’m not as pessimistic about animation today. I think there are some that go unspoken of because Social Media favors the trendy big franchises.

I should also clarify that whenever I talk about "the sad state of animation", or "streaming media today" or anything like that, I'm not talking about the actual shows or series themselves. I'm specifically referring to the industry as a whole: the corporations and what they're doing to these shows, especially in light of everything that's happened in the past year under executives like Zaslav. Entire shows being canned, rejected, unreleased, even potentially deleted forever. Not to mention animators being severely underpaid, union actors getting blacklisted, production companies refusing to pay residuals, etc.
It affects all types of media, but as usual, it's especially bad in the world of cartoons (and anime, but that's another story). So if you ever see me referring to something like "streaming media continuing to push in the bleak and often soulless direction", I'm specifically referring to the industry itself, not modern shows in general.

I've been using the same username for almost 20 years across various websites, so it's possible you might've seen it. It's childish but I've had it for so long it's hard for me to let go of it at this point.
I called myself TheViolentTomboy partially in reference to Tendo Akane from Ranma 1/2 and partially in reference to me beating up the boys back in junior high at the time for picking on me first.

For a lot of weebs, it seems like they hate RWBY for its success. It's like when a series totally drops the ball for you yet keep on truckin' because it scratched an itch others had other than you. That... frustrates them. Said frustration is amplified when it's not just them but a whole group alienated because, say, two of the main girls seem romantically involved. This show should tank because they bounce but nope. It's that along with their warped perception of Japan overall too. :/
It's like, a result of a lot of western weeb culture being about rankings and what can be called peak fiction and what's mid and all that shit. You can't be caught dead watching a mid series bc that means you have shit taste, and calling something else mid means that everyone else has shit taste. People can't just. Like something. They have to prove that it's actually one of the best things ever before it's socially acceptable to enjoy it.
So when they see a show like RWBY that they think is terrible, they can't wrap their heads around the idea that calling it terrible isn't enough to get people to turn on it.

I find a lot of the RWDE today weird with how I remember the show’s initial simplicities being a point of contention. Many were vocal about how it felt like the school life shenanigans were holding back the heroes from exploring more of Vale and beyond.
Hell, some felt Team RWBY weren’t much for protagonists. Yet now people are clamoring for Jaune and/or Oscar to take over.
How did we get here?
The exact how's and why's could likely fill a very frustrating book.
If I were to stake my wager it'd be that these critics 'wanted' the show to be more 'adventurous' and 'mature'. But then when it happened in a way they didn't like, and with the tragic death of Monty Oum. They put on some rose tinted glasses and decided to use the silent as a prop in their complaints.
After which RWDE devolved/evolved into the beast it is today, where everyone has to have basically the same takes or they'll be turned on. Take not on Unicorn who disliked Clover's death a lot, but has now gone back and said "actually Ironwood's fall was bad and Jac is a good dad!" despite having previously liked both characters handlings.
As for Jaune, or a guy taking center stage, that's always been an underlying thing its just gotten more overt and aggressive with time.
Super Saiyan Nora in Volume Eight was supposed to be in Volume Three.

I mean, I get why they pushed it back if so. We'd only just learned her semblance, might be a bit too early to have her overload it.
But still... fucking hell, they really wanted to break everyone in the Fall, huh?
I love how the final battle with Adam carries a vibe of isolation. It's completely cut off from the main battle with Cordovan with no chance for back-up aside from Yang's surprise attack. There's no grand audience to witness this showdown, no stakes that will shake the world to its core. Just one dangerous man hitting rock bottom and seeking vengeance against the two woman who's only sin was that they didn't submit like they were "suppose to."
yup, and it also plays into Adam’s core abuse tactic - he isolates and intimidates to give himself the upper hand, because he knows he can’t win in a straight fight without his cheap tactics. it’s why he bailed at Haven
