āLet me seeāwhat are my other shortcomings. I get in the dumps at times, and donāt open my mouth for days on end. You must not think I am sulky when I do that. Just let me alone, and Iāll soon be right. What have you to confess now? Itās just as well for two fellows to know the worst of one another before they begin to live together.ā
-Sherlock Holmes, a Study in Scarlet
"I play the violin when Iām thinking. Sometimes I donāt talk for days on end. (He half glances round towards John.) Would that bother you? Potential flatmates should know the worst about each other."
-BBC Sherlock, a Study in Pink
Interesting that the ACD version is not only more honest about his depression; he also is interested to know what John should confess as the worst of him.

SHERLOCK: Knew youād get there eventually. West wasnāt killed here; thatās why there was so little blood.
JOHN: How long have you been following me?
SHERLOCK: Since the start. You donāt think Iād give up on a case like this just to spite my brother, do you?

The adventure of the Bruce-Partington Plans:Ā
Holmes swept his light along the window-sill. It was thickly coated with soot from the passing engines, but the black surface was blurred and rubbed in places. āYou can see where they rested the body. Halloa, Watson! what is this? There can be no doubt that it is a blood mark.ā He was pointing to faint discolourations along the woodwork of the window.
Now in The Great Game, as Sherlock and John realise how Westieās body got onto the roof of the underground train.Ā
Several times during the past three years I have taken up my pen to write to you, but always feared lest your affectionate regard for me would tempt you to some indiscretion which would betray my secret.

Alas, Mofftiss made this into a rage scene rather than a reconciliation.Ā
Where ACD makes his Watson faint, Mofftiss made their John a rage muffin. And Sherlockās worst fears are confirmed.

As it is April Foolsā Day, I thought it appropriate to look at how Holmes uses disguises to fool people. The above is from The Man With The Twisted Lip;Ā
I found the den of which I was in search. Ordering my cab to wait, I passed down the steps, worn hollow in the centre by the ceaseless tread of drunken feet; and by the light of a flickering oil-lamp above the door I found the latch and made my way into a long, low room, thick and heavy with the brown opium smoke, and terraced with wooden berths, like the forecastle of an emigrant ship.
Through the gloom one could dimly catch a glimpse of bodies lying in strange fantastic poses, bowed shoulders, bent knees, heads thrown back, and chins pointing upward, with here and there a dark, lack-lustre eye turned upon the newcomer. Out of the black shadows there glimmered little red circles of light, now bright, now faint, as the burning poison waxed or waned in the bowls of the metal pipes. The most lay silent, but some muttered to themselves, and others talked together in a strange, low, monotonous voice, their conversation coming in gushes, and then suddenly tailing off into silence, each mumbling out his own thoughts and paying little heed to the words of his neighbour.
The BBCV Version:Ā
where of course he finds Sherlock.

In honour of April Foolsā Day, I offer this from The Adventure of the Empty House:Ā
I struck against an elderly, deformed man, who had been behind me, and I knocked down several books which he was carrying. I remember that as I picked them up, I observed the title of one of them, The Origin of Tree Worship, and it struck me that the fellow must be some poor bibliophile, who, either as a trade or as a hobby, was a collector of obscure volumes. I endeavoured to apologize for the accident, but it was evident that these books which I had so unfortunately maltreated were very precious objects in the eyes of their owner. With a snarl of contempt he turned upon his heel, and I saw his curved back and white side-whiskers disappear among the throng.
The BBC Version is a patient of Johnās who is a purveyor of porn. However, the joke by Mofftiss is that this was NOT Sherlock in disguise.Ā
