Bobbie crept around the corner towards Chrisjenâs office stalking her prey. She was so focused on her mission she didnât notice she had picked up a shadow of her own.
âWhat do you think youâre doing?â
Bobbie thought she did extremely well not to jump two feet in the air and turned in what she hoped was a casual manner towards Avasaralaâs chief of security.
âIâm investigating something.â she admitted reluctantly.
Cotyar leaned casually against the wall. âWhat are you investigating? A mystery perhaps?â
âItâs not so much a what as a who.â
âSo youâreâŠâ he trailed off expectantly.
Bobbie glared. âIâm spying. Happy?â
Cotyarâs face split into a grin. âIâd be thrilled, Marine, but youâre doing a terrible job.â
âNot all of us have âEspionageâ as a middle name.â
âUh-huh. Does Avasarala know?â
âThat you suspect someone on the Martian Ambassadorâs staff of needing to be watched?â
âIâve mentioned it.â
âAnd you donât think she trusts your judgement enough to have taken the necessary steps?â
Bobbie dropped her eyes sheepishly. âIâd just feel betterââ
âStepping on the toes of those of us who actually know what weâre doing,â he finished. He shook his head ruefully. âAlright. The first rule of spy craft is that you donâtââ
The door Bobbie had been watching swung open and with a muttered âshitâ she bodily shoved Cotyar through the nearest unlocked door. It clicked closed behind them and Bobbie pressed her ear against the imitation wood grain.
Cotyar reached carefully around her and turned on the lights. His expression was unreadable.
ââŠdonât get caught?â she ventured.
âNo. The first rule of spy craft is that you donât act like youâre spying. That means no skulking about in trench coats and dark glassesââ
âIâm not wearing a trench coat orââ
âAnd,â he continued talking over her. âNo ducking around corners or into closets to avoid being seen.â He gestured at the cramped storage room they were in. âThe best way to divert suspicion is to act like you belong there. No one looks twice at a Marine on duty. Everyone looks at the Marine trying not to be seen. Got it?â
She nodded. âOkay. What now? Do we go back out there?â
âI think thatâs a good idea.â
Bobbie tried the knob and froze. âUmmm. Itâs locked.â
Cotyar rattled the knob. It didnât turn. He blew out a breath. âRule number two: Stay aware of your surroundings.â
âI donât suppose you know what time the cleaning crewâs shift starts.â
âAs a matter of fact, I do,â Cotyar frowned. âI hope you donât have an issue with tight spaces.â
âI practically live in a metal suit barely bigger than me,â Bobbie shot back.
The spy settled his back against a container, his relaxation completely incongruous with their situation. âWell, it could be worse.â
âI guess. No oneâs bleeding. Yet.â
âThatâs not what I meant.â
âWhat did youâ?â The door swung open and Bobbie felt herself flush in embarrassment. âItâs worse.â
âThe entire system is in shambles, quit fucking around in the closet. Thereâs work to do.â Avasarala turned on her heel and Bobbie caught the door before it could swing shut again.
