The three loops are of uniform size and stem from the topknot of the Maru-mage hairstyle. As best I can understand, this hairstyle was popular among mistresses and concubines, as the Maru-mage was a style specifically reserved for married women.

    In the Edo period, it began to be worn by town-girls in the old city of Tokyo. Eventually, however, this hairstyle became the second most popular among housewives after the Maru-mage. It also seems that this hairstyle was appropriate for widows to wear during their period of mourning.

  This hairstyle was worn from the middle of the Edo period to the Taisho and even well into the beginning of the Showa period. It is a hairstyle that is one of the standards of being a woman. It’s the custom of housewives and the elderly. Generally, hair ornaments of white and purple chirimen would have been common, while young brides would use scarlet chirimen, such as kanoko shibori.
