“I still can’t believe we’re going to an alien planet.”

“I mean, technically it’s just a part of an alien planet, which broke off from the rest of it years ago,” Kara replies. “Argo is just a city.”

“It’s close enough,” Kate replies. She shoots a look behind them, where J’onn’s spaceship has obligingly made a spot for Martha’s carseat, and snorts. “First time we take Martha out of the country, we take her off of the planet.”

Kara grins. “She’s cultured.”

The ship is mostly capable of flying itself, so neither Kara nor Kate needs to do much as it slowly lowers onto the surface of Argo City. There’s a welcoming committee waiting to greet them, Alura in the front with a wide smile.

“That’s your mom?” Kate asks, gathering Martha up out of her carseat.

“It is,” Kara replies. “Are you ready to meet her?”

“Ready as I’ll ever be,” Kate says. “Let’s go.”

Alura pulls Kara into a hug the second she steps out of the ship. “Hello, darling! I’m so glad you came to visit!”

“Hi, Mom,” Kara says, hugging Alura tightly back. “I want you to meet someone. Well, two someones.”

“Kate and Martha, I assume?” Alura asks, letting go of Kara and beaming at Kate. “Kara’s told me all about you. I’m so glad to meet you, Kate.”

“Hi,” Kate says, awkwardly waving one hand while holding Martha in the other.

“And this is Martha?” Alura asks, stepping forward and cooing at Martha. “Oh, she’s adorable. And Kara, just in case anything happens, I’ve made sure to keep a pod prepared.”

Kara blanches. “Uh, Mom, I don’t think that’s going to be necessary.”

“Just in case of emergency,” Alura assures her.

“What are we talking about?” Kate asks, holding Martha a little tighter.

“Nothing,” Kara assures her.

“I’m just telling Kara that I’ve made precautions, in case of an emergency,” Alura tells Kate. “I’ve got an escape pod ready, if anything happens.”

Kate’s eyes bug out. “You want to shoot our baby into space?”

“Only if there’s no other option,” Alura assures her. “Now, come on, you two. Let me show you where you’ll be staying!”

Kate falls in step with Kara, a few steps behind Alura. “Your mom isn’t really going to put Martha in an escape pod, is she?”

“Come on, you can say it!” Kara prompts. “Come on, just say mama!”

“Which one of us is going to be Mom, anyway?” Kate asks, watching from the couch as Kara tries to coax Martha into saying her first word. “Or are we going to do something with our names?”

“I haven’t really thought about it,” Kara admits. “Do you have any ideas?”

“Well,” Kate says slowly, “I did sort of think about maybe having Martha call me Ima. It’s Hebrew. I called my mom Mom, but she called her mom Ima.”

“Then you can be Ima, and I’ll be Mom,” Kara says. She looks down at Martha. “What are you gonna say first, sweetie? Ima or Mama?”

Martha stares up at Kara and gums on her fist.

“I kinda get the feeling she’s not going to say anything just yet,” Kate says.

“Give her a chance!” Kara protests. “Come on, Martha. Ma! Ma!”

Martha gurgles.

“Kara, she’s only nine months old,” Kate adds. “That’s still early for a first word.”

“I know, but I believe in her,” Kara replies. “Come on, Martha! You can do it!”

Martha stares at Kara for a moment, then she flails her arms around and giggles, almost falling over before Kate swoops in to catch her.

“Is Mama pushing you too hard?” she coos. “Ima’s got you. I’ll keep you away from mean old Mama.”

“Hey!” Kara protests. “Kate! Don’t turn Martha against me!”

“I’m just telling it like it is,” Kate replies. “Come on, Martha, let’s go play in your activity chair.”

Martha gurgles and wiggles in approval. Kate carries her into the living room, and Kara trails after, still protesting.

“I’m not mean! And I’m not pushing! Kate! Kate!”

“How long do you think it’ll take Mama to realize I was just teasing?” Kate asks Martha conversationally.

“You guys do realize she’s too young to remember any of this, right?” Kate says. “Or to understand it?”

“That’s irrelevant,” Mary replies. “The important part is, I’m a better aunt.”

“Are not!” Alex protests. “Kara, tell Mary I’m the better aunt.”

“Oh, I’m not getting involved,” Kara says immediately. “But if I were going to get involved, I would say that Martha isn’t going to play favorites.”

“Well, that’s stupid,” Mary replies. “Clearly, I’m the best aunt, so…”

“They’ve been at this for a week,” Kate groans, sitting down next to Kara as Alex and Mary start arguing again. “Is there any chance they’ll give up?”

“Probably not,” Kara admits. “Alex won’t give up until Mary does, and Mary won’t give up until Alex does, so…”

“So we’re stuck in an endless cycle,” Kate says, dramatically throwing herself backwards. “Couldn’t they save this until Martha is at least old enough to talk? She’s not even six months old yet. What opinions do they really expect to get out of her?”

“I think this is more for them than it is for her,” Kara admits. “But they’re having fun. They won’t admit it, but they are.”

Mary’s voice raises in volume, and Kate groans. “Couldn’t they have quieter fun?”

“I can’t believe you convinced me to have a baby with you,” Kate says, shaking her head in mock disapproval as Kara coos over their new baby girl.

“Come on, you’re a Bat,” Kara counters. “Isn’t adopting a bunch of kids part of the contract?”

“No, that’s just Bruce’s thing,” Kate dismisses. “It’s never really been something I was that interested in.”

“Aww, but look at her little face!” Kara cries, holding the baby out towards Kate. “Come on, how can you resist this face?”

Kate looks down, and her resolve visibly cracks. “I mean…” She sighs deeply. “I guess everyone was right when they said it would be different if it were my baby.”

“Or maybe it’s because we have the cutest baby in the whole world, now don’t we?” Kara coos. “Aren’t you the cutest baby in the whole wide world?”

“She can’t understand you.”

“I know, but she’s so cute! I have to tell her.”

Kate rolls her eyes, but she does it fondly. “You’re ridiculous, you know.”

“And you love me for it,” Kara counters. “And you love our baby girl.”

This takes place after this piece.

Kara and Kate both love Martha very much. Of course they do. She’s their daughter. They both absolutely adore her.

That being said, that doesn’t make caring for a baby any less exhausting.

“I’m taking a nap,” Kate declares as soon as Kara walks into their apartment. She hands Kara baby Martha, and then she curls up on the coffee table.

Kara stares. “Uh, Kate?”

“Shh, napping.”

“On the coffee table?”

“It’s horizontal, it’s good enough.”

Kara looks from Kate to Martha. “You’ve driven Mommy crazy,” she whispers to Martha, who gurgles with apparent delight.

“Napping,” Kate repeats. “Shh.”

Kara grins at Kate and covers her with a blanket from the couch. She considers wedging a pillow between her head and the table, but ultimately decides that messing with Kate further is a bad idea right now. Instead, she and Martha head to the nursery.

“So,” Kara says, “what have you been doing that tired Mommy out so much? I bet you’ll be better for me. Let’s sit down and read a book okay?”

No, Martha loudly declares as she begins to cry the second Kara sits down, not okay.
