Janine rubbed her forehead, today was already a nightmare. It wasn’t often she was asked to personally collect one of her boss’s colleagues but it was just typical it would happen on a day when half of the office has ‘flu. The plane was delayed so she was collecting her thoughts somewhere quieter. Her mind wasn’t picking up much of what she was seeing, it was pretty normal for an airport. Until someone caught her eye. Her stomach jolted and her mind was cast back. She has spent a lot of summers in Wales as a child, long months exploring the countryside while her parents went on day-trips. One year in particular was searing in her mind. The summer she had come round to being “she”. And the summer she had swapped names with a boy realising he was “he”. There was no doubt in her mind that the ginger man being talked at by someone with a small collection of toblerones was the sweet, kind, understanding boy she had given her name 21 years before. He had the same look about him, the same aura she thought … it was difficult to explain? “Oh mum needs me, see you later Martin!” That was it. Janine summoned as much strength as she could and strode boldly over to the table. “Martin?” The wide shining eyes shot her a puzzled wince. The air hummed with the awkward confusion before Janine remembered the thing which would prover her right or wrong. When they had “swapped names”, the two children had bought tags made for dog collars with their names on and physically swapped them. Janine had used hers to power her determination, because there was someone else who had resolved at the same time to change his fate. She fished around in the bottom of her purse and pulled out a scratched metal disc on a chain. The gasp from the table was so small, but so full of meaning. It wasn’t long before the mad had delved into his shirt and held out the matching tag. The grin on their faces was all they needed; the silence just held the feeling of their hearts swelling with surprise and joy. “So you managed to become a pilot then, that’s amazing!”Janine eventually said. Martin choked out a laugh, still too stunned to speak. “… it’s great to see you..” he said eventually. Janine nodded so hard it felt ad though her neck would break. It was hard to find words. It felt like hours before she finally decided on her course of action. “Do you have time for coffee?”
