The Incident ; 

Dr. Mark Dean is an inventor and computer engineer.

Born March 2, 1957, in Jefferson City, Tennessee, Mark was a bright and energetic child who helped his father build a tractor from scratch. He recalled being asked by his classmates if he was black because he was too smart to be black. He excelled both athletically and academically and continued his success in college as he graduated with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tennessee in 1979.

The following year, Dean became an IBM engineer. Despite his new job, he continued his education and received a master's degree in electrical engineering from Florida Atlantic University in 1982. At IBM, Dean served as the chief engineer of the team that developed the IBM Personal Computer AT. Dean holds three of the original nine patents that form all PCs and has over 20 patents.

In 1992, Dean received a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Stanford University, and three years later he was the first black IBM Fellow, the highest technical honor awarded by the company. In 1997, Dr. Dean was inducted into the National Inventors Hall of Fame, joining two other noted black members, George Washington Carver and Dr. Percy Julian. In 2001, Dr. Dean was elected a member of the National Academy of Engineers.

Since 2013, Dr. Dean has served as the John Fisher Distinguished Professor in the Department of Eletrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee.
