Kronos Quartet -Ā Winter 2020 Release: Kronos' Fifty for the Future #31ā35 of 50 -Ā Mark Applebaum, Hawa KassĆ© Mady DiabatĆ©, Susie Ibarra, Vladimir Martynov, and Henry Threadgill
Kronosā Fifty for the Future is commissioning a collection of 50 new works ā 10 per year for five years ā that are devoted to the most contemporary approaches to the string quartet and designed expressly for the training of students and emerging professionals. The works are being commissioned from an eclectic group of composers ā 25 men and 25 women ā and the collection is beginning to represent the truly globe-spanning state of the art of the string quartet in the 21st century.
On February 6, we released the scores and parts, audio recordings, and many more resources for Fifty for the Future works by Mark Applebaum, Hawa KassĆ© Mady DiabatĆ©, Susie Ibarra, Vladimir Martynov, and Henry Threadgill, which join previously released pieces by Franghiz Ali-Zadeh, Laurie Anderson, Ken Benshoof, Raven Chacon, Islam Chipsy, Aftab Darvishi, FodĆ© Lassana DiabatĆ©, Rhiannon Giddens, Philip Glass, Yotam Haber, Joan Jeanrenaud, Garth Knox, Aleksander KoÅciów, Nicole LizĆ©e, Soo Yeon Lyuh, OnutÄ NarbutaitÄ, Kala Ramnath, Karin Rehnqvist, Yevgeniy Sharlat, Trey Spruance, Tanya Tagaq, Stephan Thelen, Merlijn Twaalfhoven, Aleksandra Vrebalov and Wu Man. āThe mad scientist of musicā -Ā A TED talk I disagree with wholeheartedly.Ā
Mostly, what I disagree with is the somewhat overarching theme (seen all over the place, especially in academic composition) that doing somethingĀ āoutside the boxā - in this case, giving performers unexplained non-notation, using homemade nonsense instruments, makingĀ ācompositionsā based on things which arenāt music, like the Copenhagen subway map (and making a very comfortable living doing all of those things), makes him a visionary, in some way. I think that sort of thing can go one of two ways. The great composers pushed boundaries, broke rules, were daring, and inventive, but I think this talk is a pretty good demonstration that breaking rules might be a necessary condition for greatness, in a way, but it definitely isnāt sufficient. His rule-breaking is not the equal of William Byrd, Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky, or Mozartās rule-breaking.Ā
