Eva:Ā āHajimemashiteā (WIP)
!!SPOILER ALERT!!Ā
So I watched Eva 3.0 + 1.0 yesterday. From a meta perspective, I think the ending was very fitting.Ā From a shipping perspective... itās Head Canon Time. Seems like the Sadamoto-Eva bonus chapterĀ āSummer in Edenā more or less got incorporated as part of Mariās background, which explains her attachment to Shinji - heās a living reminder of Yui. Asuka sitting by herself on the platform slightly apart from the others hints that she hasnāt necessarily found her place even in this new world (or that sheās finally had an actual childhood that lets her be *independent*, and not *alone* out of necessity).
Head canon territory: in the last scenes, Mari finally fulfills her promise to keep Shinji safe for Yui, but realizes that she, like everyone else, needs to be released from the curse of Eva (Yui). She seeks out Asuka. Asuka doesnāt know who Mari is, though the sight of Mari feels profoundly nostalgic. She stands, but canāt find the words.Ā I like to think that Mari responds withĀ āhajimemashiteā (ānice to meet youā) ... itās what you would say in hope of connecting with someone ;)Ā Ā
Will repost when finished, but just had to open this release valve first lol.
(The translations might be a little vague because I ended up using DeepL, but Iāve confirmed with other speakers that the sentiments are accurate)
Itās too early to bring this up now but I need to ācause westerners love to spread the notion that japanese animeĀ fans (especially minorities and allies/including fujoshi/fundashi) are a monolith and donāt ever get upset at how their characters are portrayed/sidelined in media and milked and used as bait for money; here are a few opinions I came across, by actual nativeĀ japanese people, complaining about Shin Evaās treatment of their LGBT-coded characters. I also watched the film in theaters.Ā
Do have in mind that on social media, negative opinions (by japanese people) are scarce, one of the reasons being that a chunk of the jpnĀ eva fandom is a cult that doesnāt allow for criticism of the movies and fans fearĀ being harassed off if they speak up about the problematic aspects of it. Nobody will ever come forward, publically,Ā **as a minority** and talk about how this movie hurts them. So donāt assume that even those who positively reviewed/enjoyed it it didnāt have their own gripes with it (especially if theyāre popular fan artists + women). They might be trying to stay polite or fear being bullied to hell for expressing their negative impressions of it.
gfs!!!! wtf theyre gfs!!!
